My wife and I stayed at the Capital Grand as our previous experience at the Hilton Abu Dhabi on the Corniche was a bad one, but we are loyal Hilton honours members; the rate was excellent because of Ramadan but friends had said that the Ramadan experience was worth it and not to worry so we went with an open mind. Pick up from the airport was efficient and our welcome at the hotel was lovely- Laura and the front house team presented my wife with some lovely roses and we went to the room to find a cake and bottle of wine also- a very good start.
The rooms are spacious and well tended; the aircon is responsive and easy to control, which is just as well!
As HH members we had access to breakfast either in the lounge or downstairs, and the selection in both was good, with great quality; service in the restaurant was efficient and made relaxing by Jennalyne and Edgar most days.
The pool area is fantastic with great views across to the Grand Mosque; the seating is comfortable with loungers, hammocks etc and the pool attendants were very friendly and helpful.
The pool itself is a great length for swimming and nicely cooled, and although there was no service because of Ramadan, the poolside bar was darkened so that we could drink water during the day without offending our hosts.
The hotel doesn't really sell its gym as well as it should- the equipment is first rate and it even has TRX straps as well as the usual resistance and cardio machines; we didn't train with the fitness instructor but he was knowledgeable and friendly and keen to help, and we didn't use the spa.
The winning part for us was the Executive lounge, or specifically the staff; Laura and her colleagues (Ana and Jude mainly) made it feel like we were visiting friends and we could have had sufficient to eat in the evenings from there without going out; the beer and wines selection was good as well, but overwhelmingly (and unusually in our experience) it was a relaxing place to spend a couple of hours in the evening.
The hotel design is a matter of taste- from a distance it looks like a jewel in the desert, but it was functional, well maintained and in a reasonably good location- far enough away from the bustle of the Corniche to be relaxing, but close enough to visit other places easily and inexpensively. The is a huge supermarket a 5 minute walk away for the stuff that adds up- water, soft drinks, sun cream etc, and it had a great selection of cultural foods reflecting the diversity in UAE.
At 45 degrees, we couldn't have stayed any longer, but we will definitely return soon.
