“If the four-star Mafraq Hotel were a person it would be Barbara Cartland”
Reviewed 5 March 2008

If the four-star Mafraq Hotel in Abu Dhabi were a person it would be Barbara Cartland. At night you can spot what looks like an Arabian Fortress fort a mile off. It is almost entirely covered by garish blue green and yellow neon hues - like an explosion in a paint shop. While the description may be true it is possibly an injustice. The Mafraq is a tidy and pleasant garden resort hotel only ten kilometres from the International Airport in the middle of the desert. It costs AED50.00 (about £7.00) in a luxury sedan to get there – and can be booked at the taxi office in the arrivals hall.

The hotel itself was a mixed experience. We arrived just after midnight worn and tired after 20 hours of car, bus, plane, taxi and waited more than ten minutes to check-in for the single night while the three reception staff looked very busy. We were the only guests waiting. Check-out was only slightly quicker.

Taken to our room it was a relief to discover a spacious and clean expanse after the long confinements. The décor was that of modern contemporary furniture and art combined with well worn carpet and borderline floral chintz bedspread and drapes. The bed was firm. The bathroom was immaculate - big and clean with spotless tile grouting, large mirrors and a bidet. The bath however was quite narrow. To the point I feared I might become wedged and require emergency assistance. There was no iron or hair-dryer.

The buffet breakfast starts early at 0600 and lasts until 1030. It was one of the best I’ve eaten. A massive selection of fresh tropical and dried fruits beckoned. Melon pineapple, watermelon, mangoes, kiwifruit, paw paw – not to mention the old favourites such as banana orange and apple. Add croissants and Danishes, muesli, yoghurt to the cooked breakfast, sausages, bacon, eggs and more. There is a good chance other guests may struggle with the bath as well.

The hotel itself has facilities that deserve more than a night’s stay. A leisure pool has a bar with a decent slide for kids that runs through a rocky outcrop. Other facilities include table-tennis, tennis, volleyball, badminton and a gym.

For the grown-ups Happy hour is from 1200 to 2000 hours. Enough time to get more than happy.

It seems the hotel can’t decide whether it is a kid friendly family resort or a business hotel. My best guess is that is hedging its bets by being both - with no obvious detriment to the other.

A room including breakfast, service (10%) tourist tax (6%) cost AED719. About £103 and is pretty cheap by Abu Dhabi standards.

Its location and its price mean I’d probably stay there again. Even Barbara Cartland was loveable.

I stayed here for three weeks with colleagues whilst working in the area. The hotel itself is very pleasant, good spacious rooms with balconies overlooking the pool and the service is of a good standard.

The pool is more than adequate and there is a separate area with gymnasium and sports court which are free for residents. The food was always of a very good standard and the various buffets which run alongside the menu were top quality.

There is a westerners British style bar which is fine and every evening (except Sunday or Monday - I forget) there is a house band. When I was there it was a trio of girls from the Philippines who were entertaining enough just the volume was too loud! You couldnt hear the person next to you in the bar when they were performing.

The hotel is a long way from the city and it was chosen for us due to its proximity to the ship repair yards where we were working. Do not stay here if you wish to be near Abu Dhabi city!

There is a shuttle bus to and from the airport.

Mafraq Hotel - Abu Dhabi,Unite Arab Emirates, Midddle East
We visited the Mafraq Hotel last yaer and our stay there could not have been more pleasurable! The hotel itself was clean, spacious and well furnished as were the grounds in which it stood. At the time we went, the weather was increddibly hot but the hotel offered a cool and well aired retreat from the sun.
Hotel staff were incredible. All were friendly, helpful and nothing was to much trouble for them. They offered an excellent service throughut our stay and it was a real shame when we had to leave. The hotel grounds were well looked after and the pool, although not that big was refreshing and always welcoming. Unlike other places that we have stayed in, the atmosphere was always calm and relaxed. Definately the environment to unwind in. The hotel also offers a wide range of other services such tennis coaching, swimming lessons, keep-fit, spa, ftness center which were all well priced.
Eating within the hotel was a fantastic experience with fresh food prepared and cooked daily. The waiting staff as well as the cheifs were as curtious as any other members of staff and the all went out of their way to ensure each meal was a feast.
Although the hotel is situated about a 20 minute ride from Abu Dhabi, a local cab company works for the hotel and the price for such a long journey was only a few pounds. People everywhere were friendly and helpful and although bartering is expected, unlike some other arabic countries there was no hard selling pressure to buy. For those not wishing to travel by taxi, the hotel also offered a free bus service. Due to the hot weather, it was very strange but understandable to shop at night. With the such busy streets and the city of Abu Dhabi felt very safe to be in. Definately a place we can't wait to visit again.
