“Absolutely amazing Oasis in the desert”
Reviewed 24 July 2012

My wife and I stayed at the Shangri-La Hotel in Abu Dhabi last June during our honeymoon. It was an absolutely amazing experience. It was so good, we can't help but use it as the yardstick with which to measure all the other hotels we've stayed at since. Our experience was made very special by the wonderful staff who always had giant smiles on their faces, and really impressed us by always greeting us by name. Every time we returned to the hotel or left our room, we were welcomed with "hello Mr. Tyler", or "how can we help you Mr. Tyler?" They also constantly checked up on us and made sure our stay was going well. We also really enjoyed the nice touch of them bringing up a bottle of champagne for our honeymoon.

The hotel's decor is what I would describe as a combination of middle eastern airyness and architecture with an open Mediterranean feel, bringing in the sea. The lobby is beautiful, accented by a huge chandelier. The rooms are equally impressive, containing a fantastic bathroom with a bath tub Shamu would be happy in. The room had a very clean, open feel with tile floors that helped a lot with the heat. The bed was also very nice, huge and extremely comfortable. The view was also very nice. We had a picturesque view over the resort grounds, including the pools and man made river that runs through the complex, as well as across the real river to the enormous Mosque. The pools shared this view, as did the restaurant. It was very nice to sit by the pool with this view in the background.

The grounds have a man made river on them, and little abra boats that they will ferry you around on between the hotel and nearby shopping, or just around in a circle of the resort if you like. We felt this was a very nice touch, especially romantic at night.

I also really appreciated the shuttle service they offered that took us to the Mosque for the tour in the morning, and over to the mall for some shopping later in the day. The location is also quite convenient as there is a small mall like building next door with several nice shops and restaurants. We ate at Ushna, the Indian Restaurant, one night and were very happy with the food, especially the well balanced spiciness and the wine that was paired with it.

The hotel was also very convenient for us to travel to Ferrari World and the Formula One Race track, both a short taxi ride away. They were also able to secure tickets for us at the concierge and arrange the transfers for us.

We were not able to visit the spa during our stay, but really enjoyed the large pool, though it was nearly unbearable in the heat of late June.

We ate breakfast twice at the buffet restaurant, Sofra Bld in the hotel. The selection was very good, and had something for every taste from traditional American style omelets and sausages to Chinese dishes. We also liked that the wait staff came around fairly often with specialty drinks of the morning including different juices. All the food was very good, and we admittedly ate far more than we needed to in 110 degree heat. It was on the pricey side, but you are paying the the convenience of eating in the hotel, and for breakfast, it was very good. Good enough at least to prevent us from looking anywhere else during our stay.

Our favorite part was definitely how well the staff treated us, especially by taking the time to learn our names. Also, always greeting us with a smile and making sure we were enjoying our stay. Even the small things like a refreshing cool towel whenever we returned and tea tastings and dates in the lobby really made us glad to be staying there.

Large rooms with great views of the grand mosque. On the outskirts of AD but taxis are cheap so not really a negative. A choice of swimming pools and restaurants. More relaxing then a city hotel but in easy reach of the city for shopping or eating out.

A beautiful 5 star hotel with the most impecable service from the chaps who open your car door, to th lady who opens the front door, the receptionist who greets you, the pool staff, the well turned out and attentive bar staff to the amazing restuarnt staff this place has it all. A beautiful infinity pool over looking the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and beautifully decorated and presented hall ways and luxurious rooms with sumptiuous bathrooms. Its my favourite place. Living in Abu Dhabi we stayed here once but have enjoyed the Buffet at Sofra and incredibly authentic Bordeaux "French" Restaurant who pull out all the stops and the richest most unctuous cuisine and amazing wine councilers. Go visit its so worth it!

Room Tip: Ask the reservation staff they no best!

Beautiful rooms, very well sized and we had an excellent deal.

We had to wait longer for a non smoking room to be cleaned and when we walked in we could smell it had just been sprayed with an air fresher and made to be very pleasant.
If we had smelt smoke we would not have stayed but it was fine.

Everyone was very friendly and I must say this is one of my favourite hotels ever.

Room Tip: We had a deluxe room which was huge..big enough for two..bathroom was amazing xx

I spend only 2 days on this hotel with my family. The kids enjoy the swimming pools surrounding the hotels ( total 3 ) and I enjoy setting nearby the pool enjoying the view of Skh. zayed mousqe inside the room which look like suite. Food is Excellent , since the buffet includes different types. Rooms service also have different foods and nice breakfast with very reasonable price. Staff are very helpfull and try there best to serve us. The kids enjoyed also the trip by boat surrounding the hotel . I send a lovely time inside this hotel and plan to visit it again.

Having stayed at the Shangri La in Shanghai, I had high expectations from this brand and decided to stay here with my best friend for my birthday weekend this year. From the moment we arrived, we were treated like VIPs. Everyone at reception wished me a happy birthday, we were given a private check in desk along with the anticipated and warmly served welcome drinks and dates. Additionally, we were allowed a late check out of 5pm the next day and were given a delicious, enormous (far too much for 2 people!), chocolate mousse birthday cake for free, which we subsequently took with us when we went home. There are three hotels on the site, one is the Traders Hotel, the other is the hotel residences and the third is the largest 'family hotel' where we stayed. We were able to use the pools and beaches of all three complexes which meant that even though the two main pool were always busy, it was very easy to find an empty, quiet pool by one of the residences. It made us feel like an entire beach and pool were ours alone! Naturally the lifeguard provided us with all the towels and cold water (in a coolbox) that we could possibly want. Later in the day we wanted to do some laps so we went over to the lap pool that is attached to the spa and fitness facility. Again there were only two other people in the pool (bearing in mind this was a weekend) so we did our laps and then went into the spa to use the jacuzzi and steam rooms. Everything is immaculate in presentation throughout the hotel. The breakfast is mouth watering and has an extensive variety of foods to choose from. The Souk which is attached to the whole complex is easily reached by Abra should you wish to take the free ride through the canals and there are plenty of great restaurants here to choose from if you don't want to have lunch or dinner in the hotel. We stayed at the Shangri La using the Entertainer Voucher discount and can't wait to go back! Did I mention that the view of the Grand Mosque from the room was breathtaking? We absolutely loved it and sent my mum there for her birthday the following month. Thank you Shangri La!

Room Tip: Pick the ones facing the beach and Mosque and not on the ground floor.
