“Atmospheric and welcoming”

The other reviews have it spot on: the staff is great and eager to make your stay wonderful, the location cannot be beat and the athmosphere is unique. The rooftop restaurant has amazing views and is probably one of the best sunset spots in Sanaa.

There are cons but none of them puts the hotel at fault:
- water pressure in the showers is low and hot water is hit or miss, but this is Yemen and when you are aware of the water shortages the country and Sanaa are facing, this is really a "rich man's" complaint
- the mosques around it are noisy: yes the muezzin calls will wake you up at 4am, but that's part of the clture of the country and it adds to the atmosphere of the place. Earplugs do wonders!

Well... I have chosen this hotel after reading comments on the tripadvisor. Anyway in some aspects it was a mistake. The only good thing one can say about Burj al Salaam is the location- in the center of the Old Town in Sanaa. If I should reccommend this hotel I should remain silence about all other things. First of all- I've paid 85 USD for a single room in the advertised as the four star hotel. This hotel according to any standards should have no more than 2 stars and I get the room in standard of a guesthouse. Bathroom was rather dirty, as well as the room. Of course some of the guests seemed to be impressed by the "yemeni" decoration and furniture what for me seems rather a joke. Do not believe in the internet in the rooms or in the lobby- it has worked maybe twice (shortly) during the three days stay- with the speed of 10kB-even sending a short e-mail lasted centuries- an of course forget about Skype. Views in the rooftop restaurant splendid but food overpriced and lat say average. If You try to start your breakfest early -at 7 a.m. (as I was informed at the reception restaurant should start even earlier) you will find there nothing apart of bread and jam) later the selection is not much better... Just nearby is located a mosque so don't believe that they let you sleep... Staff rather helpful but without any exeggeration... I know that it is a hotel in poor (but very nice and friendly) city and country- but if you need any comfort choose Movenpick or Royal International in the New City. The value for money ratio is absolutely one of the poorest I have found in the world.

I didnt test out other hotels, but apparently there is not a lot on offer if you want to stay in old Sanaa. It is worth staying in the old town because you get a much better feel for the city.
No matter where you stay in the old town you will be woken by the call for prayer - very early in the morning.
The manager of the hotel, Soraya, is excellent.
The hotel is charming and in a very special location.
But keep your expectations in check, this is not a small luxury hotel. It is a converted Yemeni house. The restaurant staff are not very good at all. The hotel is clean, but only just and the towels are old and should be replaced. The regular sized rooms are fine but not spacious.
I dont think it is particularly good value having travelled in other places in the Middle East but I have the feeling that there is not a lot of competition in Yemen.
The tour operator recommended by the hotel, Nomadic , is excellent and far exceeded our expectations. Hamid - went way above and beyond to help us get to Yemen.

So as long as keep your expectations in check you will have a great time at this hotel. Just relax and enjoy the Sanaa it is a very special place

Out of lack of choice, this hotel is the only choice if you want to stay in the Old City of Sana'a.

The Pros:
-Pleasant staff.
-Cool/Oriental looking rooms/building and nice roof top view.

The Cons:
-Smelly sheets, pillows, and towels. They smelled of a human who had not washed their hair for a while. The hotel could try using soap/detergent when washing their linens.
-The bathroom was not entirely clean. Toilet seat was the worse.
-The rooms are freezing. Blanket usless. I asked for a heater and that worked.
-Noisy. I heard furniture moving all night long, the reciption said it was a party, I doubt it.

We were on our Christmas holidays travelling over the Arabian Peninsula and had the worst nightmare arriving at this place(not a hotel at all) in Sanaa. The rooms were dirty the bathroom was filthy....no one can sleep in a place like that. Got a throat ache because the room was extremely cold.It was not we were expecting from a boutique hotel graded as the number 1 in Sanaa. The only thing to do was booking the next flight to a better place.Avoid it .

I could get a room on the 6th floor so the view from my room was already fantastic.
But the view from the room top is narurally much more splendid. So everybody can enjyo the view !
Room was also clean and comfortable. Shower room and toilet woks also well. Wifi is available.
Every staff is very helpful.
The area around the hotel is also very much charming. You see the very beutiful part of Sanaa.
Highly recommended.

Great hotel in Sanaa, being in the old city it has so much more to offer than its 5 star counterparts in the soulless new town.
