“Okay for the price - friendly staff”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 April 2010

The Shelton Hotel has seen better days but, out of season, it is cheap and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Very well located at the beginning of the main restaurant area so that accessing food was easy. The room was run-down and the bathroom was tiny, but there was lots of hot water and a heater, which was useful as it was cold at night. The hotel was quiet and we had cable TV so for $50US it was okay given that Punta is very expensive.

While the other reviews say pretty much the same thing and they are all true, I might have some other notes to mention. You might consider this a 3 star, but in truth it's less than that. For price and location it's a huge value. The rooms were clean but the bathrooms were quite run down. Tiles missing, horrible paint job, old, torn plastic shower curtain and generally very very tired. The breakfast room had shag carpeting from the past century (70's), so you can get my drift, however the staff was (young) and very helpful and happy. We were told immediately upon checking in that the Carnivale Parade would be only 1/2 block away; they told us the time and the best place to view it. (how lucky were we to happen upon this?). Uruguay in general has high standards for cleanliness and I had no reservations about cleanliness. If you're watching your pennies this will work for you.

We stayed at the Shelton for 6 nights in a double room. We initally booked only 3 nights but the hospitality was so great and the weather so warm we found it hard to leave both Punta and The Shelton!

Our double room was spacious and well ventilated with a small terrace and windows, and had a good size ensuite bathroom and TV with cable. The room was cleaned and replenished with new soaps and towels daily, and the sheets were changed every other day which i was very pleasantly suprised with. Yes.. the previous reviews are correct in that the decor is definitely from the 70s... but its clean and not at all shabby.. just a bit old. If you want modern decor there are plenty of expensive options in Punta that would happily cater for your needs at treble the price or more.

The breakfast was great - toast, croissants, orange juice, and your choice of a hot drink - and went on for a very comfortable amount of time - 8am til 11am - so no early wakeups necessary!

By far the best thing about this hotel though (if everything above hasnt convinced you) is the location. Literally bang in between the two long stretches of beach that run down Punta.. you can walk under 2 minutes in either direction and hit the sand. The high street with all the restaurants and shops begins at the hotel - its opposite. This place literally couldnt be better placed within the town.

Great staff, free internet 24 hours with 3 computers, the best location, spacious rooms.. i would highly recommend this as a great budget option and i would definitely stay again.

Location, location, location, thats what i said to the front staff as we walked 150 paces from the bus station and found ourselves smack dab between the two beaches and next to the new casino. He assured me that although the location was ideal we would learn that the service is really the most important. How true, how true, Our stay for the first week of december could not have been more enjoyable. Our room was always kept clean, we had new sheets when we asked for them and when we asked to change our room to one with aircon they were happy to accomidate us. The breakfast staff was very nice and with coldcuts and cheese that we bought from the supermarket made breakfast was highly enjoyable. Chairs for the beach, and a minifridge with our beer kept icy cold made this a very easy stay. Strong wifi in all floors of the hotel with lightning download speeds. Remember this is not a 5 star but i was never disappointed and when i asked i was told extremely useful info. i would recommend this hotel to my grandparents or my little sis. ps. The blackout window shades makes sleeping inn very easy and the aircon was new and clean.

We had a wonderful time in Punta del Este. We stayed in this hotel because my wife's cousin lives in Montevideo and told us to stay there , 1 block from both beaches, Mansa and Brave, ans just one block brom main terminal and main street. The staff very friendly and the rooms are simple but very clean. We did not need to rent a car to go around

February of 2009 we stayed at the Shelton in Punta del Este and the hotel was fine, the staff very helpful and friendly and it was very close to the bus station. The rate inclued breakfast, which was acceptable, and they offered chairs and towels free of charge to use in the beach. However, the rate was $120.00 per night, which appeared extremely high for hotel wihtout air conditioned. Later on we found a better hotel named Playa Brava for $85 with air conditioned. We book the Shelton on line, and probably that make the hotel a little more expensive than if I had walk in and ask for the rate. I noticed later on that there were plenty of hotels with vacancy, even though it was in the peak of the tourist season. The only complaint I had about the Shelton was the price, and it is enough for not recommending it.
