This is a nice, small, old hotel located in downtown Punta. It's close to both Playas Mansa and Brava and you can walk anywhere from it. Breakfast is fair, but it's usually packed with few tables for too many people.

The room was a bit small and the window was jammed due to lack of use (it took us some pushes for it to close), but everything was clean and, most importantly, the air conditioner worked just fine.

This hotel would get a 4 rating if it weren't for the staff, who was helpful as expected while we were there but exceeded expectations after we left. We forgot a package at the lobby when we were packing the car, but they kept it and kindly sent it over express mail the following day, and I'm very grateful for that.

Room Tip: If you ask for a triple room, be aware that it will be a double with a spare, smaller but still comf...

We stayed at the Bonne Etoile for the past two nights and it was pretty great.

The location is fantastic. We didn't have a pretty panoramic view, so I guess that was the only thing lacking, but it is in a great spot on the peninsula, only a couple minutes walk from either side.

The hotel offers free wifi throughout the hotel. We used it quite a bit, and found that although the signal was often kind of weak, once our computers and phones connected, the Internet access was consistently reliable. We didn't have to wait for websites to load; they came right up.

For parking, they had a teeny-tiny parking lot/garage that held about 10 cars, double-parked. Since it is not high season, we opted to park right out front on the street, where parking was plentiful.

Although the hotel is not new, it is well-maintained, and very clean.

Everyone was friendly:
- The housekeeping ladies offered us a crib for our daughter when they saw us the day we arrived, and another time asked if we needed new towels or anything when we saw them, and they were always friendly to our daughter.
- The ladies working at the breakfast area made sure that we had a high chair for our daughter. They also seemed to be happy while they were working, which was nice, and they immediately offered us warm drinks and a basket of breads and pastries.
- The men at the front desk were also friendly and helpful. We had the misfortune of losing our key on the morning of checkout, and they were very very kind about it, which we appreciated. (Thankfully we found it and I'm mailing it back tomorrow.)

Although the breakfasts were always PACKED when we were there, they did a good job of greeting everyone promptly, getting everyone their coffee/tea/hot cocoa and breads, and clearing tables promptly. Usually it seemed like every table was taken, or every table except one, but I never saw a line of people waiting to be seated. Breakfast was basically a continental type breakfast (cereals, toast, fruits (including lots of strawberries), a meat and cheese tray, juices and maybe yogurt?) plus each table receives a basket with some sweet croissants, salty croissants, a couple other pastries, a couple rolls, and a couple packs of soda crackers. Breakfast is served from 8-12, and the sign in the elevator says it is also available in your room.

There is one elevator that responds a little slowly once you've summoned it. There are also stairs right next to the elevator, so it isn't too bad.

The amenities included are: a few simple bars of typical hotel soap, a couple packets of shampoo/conditioner "duo" kind of like restaurant condiments come, and a shower cap. The rooms do have hairdryers. There is a "minibar" which has several sodas, I think, but I didn't look closely at them.

This hotel is such a bargain! Our visit made us want to come back again--soon!

Room Tip: We had room 317, which was supposed to be a 4-person apartment suite. What is ACTUALLY was, was the...

I stayed here with my mom for Christmas and had a nice time. It's on the peninsula and has a great location. Right next to hotel are a lot of shops and restaurants and it's really close to the beach. We walked to the hotel from the bus station and it took max 10 minutes. No taxi needed!
The hotel is a bit old, but clean and perfectly fine for a few days. I would definitely stay there again. Breakfast was simple but nothing to complain about. The staff was so friendly and really helpful. We wanted to find a place to eat for Christmas Eve and the staff called and made reservations for us. I would definitely recommend the Bonne Etoile Hotel!

We stayed at Bonne Etoile just one night. Friendly staff, fast check in and limited parking. Breakfast is just reasonable, with a basket of bread and "media lunas", butter and jelly. Room was clean but air conditioner was noisy. Shower spread water all around but was nice and warm. If you do not want to spend too much it's OK.

Bonne etoile:
Good option for a few days visit, not to spent your summerholiday.
Location is very good; halfway down the first part of the peninsula, on walking distance to the busterminal and the beach and the yachtharbour. The room was fine but in a
outdated decor, this goes for the whole building. There’s no airco, only a fan so it can easily can get to hot to have a goodnight sleep. Except for the terrace (on which you can ave your breakfast too) there are no other facilities in the hotel.

Tip: visit Casa Pueblo in Punta Ballena, about 10 km from Punta del Este.

The Bonne Etoile was an absolutely amazing place to stay during our weeklong vacation in Punta del Este. The staff was very friendly and the hotel retained a lot of old world charm (including leaving you room/car keys at the front when you weren't using them - so you never had to worry about them getting lost in the sand or washing out to sea). Our room was made several times a day, which almost made me feel guilty for sitting on the bed and messing up the sheets, but was a really nice feeling to walk into a clean room whether after a morning walk or when returning from dinner. The furnishings are older, but well kept and obviously well cared for. The complimentary continental breakfast was a great perk; including a never ending basket full of great media lunas and other delicious baked goods, fresh fruits, and meats and cheeses in addition to the usual breakfast fare - the 9-noon service made a great breakfast or lunch option, depending on when you decided to wake up. The hotel is conveniently located such that you are directly in the center of the shopping, with a short walk to the port and all its restaurant options, as well as both La Mansa and La Brava beaches. I will definitely stay here again and highly recommend you do as well.

As part of out 6 country, 9 hotel South America trip, both Bonne Etoile and Punte Del Este had the distinction of being by far the worst hotel and worst place we visited - only Montevideo came close!!

Yes, that's right, avoid Uruguay. Our best experience was with a stray dog on the beach.

Really don't understand what all the fuss about Punte Del Este is - sure, it's 'nice enough' and has a beach (so does Skegness) but anyway, this is about the hotel.

The hotel - like something out of the 1970s decor wise, with no English spoken (and we do speak basic Spanish, just not mute Spanish from a surly receptionist) and an average breakfast. Was like walking down the corridors from The Shining towards our room.

Plus points are the comparative value, the location, which is good and the one person who worked there we found who spoke English, who allowed us to check out a day early.

Was going to award 3 stars to be nice but it doesn't deserve them.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else if want a good room!
