From the time that you drive up to the door of this majestic tower, you are catered to by one of the friendliest and most knowledgeable staff that you could desire. All of the gardens and field behind the hotel are meticulously manicured, giving an arboretum type of appearance. Our room accommodations were quite adequate, considering that we opted for a standard room. Maid service came into the room twice a day. Unbeknownst to us, there was some malfunction with the air conditioning unit. It was detected by the maid and immediately rectified. Breakfast is served in the same room as dinner, a very lovely setting, especially if you can be seated at an outside table. Besides the wide array of fruits , cheese, meat, and sweets, you may order eggs cooked in various ways. All of it was excellent! The hotel is located a few miles from the main port area, so I was thankful to have a car. We found parking to be no problem when we ventured into shopping and dining areas as well as the lots for the gorgeous beaches. You are easily able to bike or walk from the hotel to the Oceanside rambla that can take you for miles and miles of scenic views. I highly recommend this idyllic setting. I also suggest that you introduce yourself to Ignatio, the manager. He is most solicitous to your needs.

Room Tip: You may want to opt for a more expensive room if you would be staying in the room for an extended pe...

We have just stayed here for 5 nights as part of a tour of the region. First and foremost we would say that this is a beautiful old hotel with lots of character. The gardens are beautiful and it is a great place to spend a relaxing afternoon chilling out as it never feels crowded. The breakfast is served in a lovely setting and although relatively basic it is very nice and the staff really attentive. We opted for a bigger room and were glad we did so as from what we have seen the tower does seem a bit cramped. The only observations we would make are that they perhaps need to look at the plumbing, it's all very well to say that it's part of the character of an old building but that's a easy cop out - a 5 star hotel should offer a decent shower instead of a very old and cheap shower head with poor pressure surrounded by a cheap shower curtain. Also, as stated by an earlier contributor you are a fair way out of Punta (15 dollars by taxi) and the hotel is situated in a very nice but residential neighbourhood with no amenities nearby. This does have an appeal, but it can also be an issue. To further add to this the hotel focuses massively in the evening on its famous waffle operation and the result is that guests are left in a kind of limbo with nowhere to really go in the hotel as the bar was shut and the restaurant does not open until 9pm. They did offer to serve us a drink in the hotel reception but we declined this and jumped into a taxi into Punta. There is a tendency on here for the hotel to be a little defensive, but they perhaps should take well-meaning feedback in the spirit it is given. Overall we would most definitely stay here on our next visit.

Dear Ian and Max,

Thank you for visiting L'Auberge, and for your nice review.

We are glad you enjoyed your stay, and that you liked the hotel !

We will take a look into the plumbing as you suggest.
I agree it is one of the aspects to improve, and we are looking forward to investing in that aspect in the near future.

We want to be very receptive to comments and suggestions, and I always try to get the most of them, when they are well intended (unfortunately, this is not always the case).

I look forward to seeing you again soon, and it will be my pleasure to meet you personally.

Kind regards,

Ignacio.
Owner.

Hotel L'Auberge is a beautiful, old hotel and their service cannot be beat. We go to Punta every year and normally stay here. This year, we stayed in a suite for 4 nights at the end of Jan/beginning of Feb and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We brought along our 8 month old child as well. The first day we were there the maid made up a crib complete with tiny baby pillow, sheets and coverlet for my son. Divine! The caring, attentive staff is what makes this hotel 5 stars. Every person who works here gives you quality, personal attention and seem to anticipate your needs. The front desk staff and ladies working in the dining room are beyond helpful, cheerful and attentive. Always.
Yes, the hotel is old. That is part of its charm. Yes, it is expensive. That is part of Punta del Este's charm. ;) This resort town has a high season of maybe one month... so if you go in January, everything is expensive. Compared to other hotels of the same price, L'Auberge is by far the best choice and they consistently provide a wonderful place to stay and enjoy all that Punta has to offer.
The bed was comfortable, the towels large and fluffy, my bathroom was quite large, with 2 sinks and closed off toilet area. We also had a small ante-room with desk and TWO balconies. The breakfast buffet and coffee every morning was delicious with fresh breads and fruits. The grounds and gardens are just lovely and the waffles at tea time are a must!

Room Tip: Get a suite for newer, larger rooms. The water tower rooms are small but afford lovely views.

I have stayed at L'Auberge overnight in the past. This trip I took my daughter for lunch.

It's a magical place - and so unusual in this area. Very old school, "French farm house" sort of feeling…old beams, fireplaces, quaint - but absolutely first class.

The grounds are gorgeous with mature old plantings.

Excellent food and service - and total peace in a very busy area.

If you want to see what this area was like before the bling factor in Punta now, do stay at - or visit l'Auberge.

I am coming to this Hotel for seven years. The garden, the staff and food a truly 5 star. The rooms deserve hoewever only a 2 star rating. Very small, old used furniture, very unpractical bathrooms. There are no do not disturb signs in the rooms. The cleaning woman walked in twice on me laying on the bed taking an afternoon nap.
Food as mentioned is very good. Try the fruit salad at breakfast. Worldclass. An espresso costs however USD 8. If they do not invest in updating their rooms I will not go back

You need to be careful here as some of the rooms are ridiculously small 16 sm 160 sft, especially those in the water tower, which also back onto the elevators so noisy as well classic rooms are also small and even the de luxe rooms are only 25sm 250 sft.

Our room also smelled of sewerage and we had to move to another room. All the rooms we saw are dated, old aircon, old hair dryers, old pad lock safes too small for iPads etc no complimentary drinking water, and no tea coffee making facilities in the rooms. Badly tuned tv. Sporadic wifi. Very small bathrooms only room for 1 person and showers no baths.

You really need to pay a lot extra to get a proper sized room here and make sure in advance what facilities you are going to get as well, as the place looks a bit run down and as if no money has been spent here for years. It's like an old French or English country house from the 1980s that needs big bucks spent on it.

Breakfast was a very small buffet, not good staff either.

Other guests were also complaining about the room sizes.

On the positive side it is a lovely old building in a beautiful residential district outside of the mad house of PDE, staff are generally lovely and beach facilities are offered by the hotel as well. Family run, with Excellent garden grounds, easy walk to the beach and 10 minutes by car to PDE .

Clearly this place has had better days, not really suitable for modern international travellers with the poor room facilities offered to us. But check what you are getting and perhaps you will enjoy it. There are much better hotels around the area and if you want good trendy places go to La Barra or the other beach resorts further out of PDE towards Jose Ignatio to get a feel of life as was on the beaches of. Uruguay.

Room Tip: Pay top dollar and get a suite, they are probably the only rooms that are large enough to have any s...

Dear peterah,

Thank you for visiting L'Auberge.

We are glad you liked our building and surroundings. We are proud to be running one of the best hotels in Punta for over 66 years now, with a lot of historic background as well as recent awards for excellence.

The rooms inside the tower are indeed small (they are inside the tower...). Nevertheless, many of our returning guests love the small rooms there, as they appreciate other aspects rather than space.

The rest of the rooms in other areas of the hotel are large and comfortable, and each one has its own carefully selected furniture, special decoration and excellent sheets and towels as well as artisanal amenities (not industrial). Some have balconies, jacuzzi, terrace, and even some have fireplace.

Every country has different uses and customs. In these latitudes, for example, the in-room coffee maker is not of paramount importance.
On the other hand, we offer great surroundings with an aprox. 10.000 sq. mt park, security, excellent food, proximity to the beach, free WiFi (you have to pay for that in many countries), beautiful gardens, and helpful and friendly staff.
If WiFi was having problems it was something temporary, but remember we are not the Internet Service Providers...

Overall, we try to offer a different option for travelers, with a more cozy and personal touch.
But I understand that maybe it was not the type of hotel you were looking for.

I regret that our hotel was fully booked and that we were not able to show you some of our best rooms which I am sure you would have loved and enjoyed very much.
I look forward to showing them to you personally.

Kind regards,

Ignacio Carrera

This hotel is in a residential area not too far from the beach but far enough away from the hustle-bustle of the main peninsula. The grounds are spectacular and it is a like a private paradise tucked away with a beautiful building and pool. The service was great and they were always helpful with local directions and suggestions, and also spoke English very well which was great. The onsite restaurant is great, the food is very good. I would also highly recommend the daily afternoon BBQ, the food was fresh and tasty. Overall a wonderful setting, service and experience, very relaxing!!
