My husband and I and our son (25) stayed at the AWA May 14-20, 2011. It's a very nice hotel and the staff is friendly and helpful.

This was not our usual type of vacation. We normally stay at all inclusive resorts. However, this trip was about exploring Uruguay as a potential place to retire. We used the AWA as our 'home base'.

I was worried the room would be too small, but it was actually quite adequate. They didn't have any rooms with 2 beds, so they brought in a cot for our son to use. The cot was really more like a single bed. He found it very comfortable and we managed just fine.

The room had a mini fridge filled with snacks and drinks, for a fee. We still used the fridge for our own snacks and drinks that we bought at the grocery store.

The gym was nice - not large, but it had 2 treadmills and 2 bicycles.

Complimentary breakfast each moring was always wonderful. They put out the very best sliced meats, and fresh fruits, and wonderful breads and pastries.

The AWA Hotel in Punta Del Este is a very nice and cozy boutique hotel in the beach resort city of Punta Del Este.
The room and bathroom were not large, but were very clean and comfortable and had nice furniture.

Very quiet and peaceful around the hotel which is in a residential area and away from the main peninsula area where the nightlife is. The hotel has around 30 rooms, an outdoor pool, and spa with jacuzzi, sauna, and steam room.
Friendly staff spoke English well. Helpful with directions. The included breakfast buffet was very good.

The hotel restaurant and some nearby restaurants were very expensive. But there is a shopping mall, Punta Shopping, within 5 minutes walking distance, which has some other restaurants and a market with lots of prepared food.

Can walk to 2 different beaches, both within 15 minutes. The casino/port/bus station area is around 5 minutes/$5-$10 by taxi. In April there wasn't so much going on at night. A good destination for relaxing and enjoying an uncrowded beach or just lounge around the hotel.

There was free wifi in the rooms and also a library/study room with computers to use for free.

Called the hotel same day and was quoted $180, showed up without a reservation and got the room for $140/night. No hotel taxes for foreigners in Uruguay. Price drops after April 1.

Stylish, trendy hotel in a quiet residential neighborhood away from Punta's nightlife and beaches. Excellent staff and a good on-site restaurant. I suggest renting a car if you elect to stay at the AWA. While the hotel is a bit out of the way to get to restaurants and beaches, you will not be disappointed.

I found AWA here on TripAdvisor and trusted the comments. I was not disapointed. Actually, already knew exactly what to expect. The hotel is not well situated and need a taxi for almost all the beaches. Taxi, by the way, it´s something you you will wait a lot (20 minutes, average). But it´s a very calm place, not noisy and very familiar. The rooms are small but the beds are incredibly comfortable! Housekeeping was impecable: they cleaned the room in the moring and came back in the evening for new towels and and to make the bed for your sleep. Lovely! They forgot towels sometimes, but it´s ok. Now comes what I read here: yes, it´s true that the staff is pretty inattentive. Not nice, not helpful, not warming people. The receptionist were cold, didn´t not welcome us, did not give sugestions for places to go, what to do, what so ever (actually, it started before I got there by e-mail, when I asked about transportation to Punta). Some of the guys in the restaurant was nice and the housekeepers too. But that´s it. Oh, we got champagne when we arrived, so we forgot their antipathy for a moment! For those who want to spend a lot of time in the pool and in the hotel, I wouldn´t recommend this one. The pool is ridiculously small. The pool area is actually nice for a drink or snack in the afternoon but that´s it. It´s definitly not great to hang out there during the day. The hotel is close to Punta Shopping and a few restaurants (like El Paleque and El Borgogne). The most serious complain we had was the fact that in their website they announce "bikes free of charge to our guests" but they charge it and it´s 30 dollars. We left a complaint personally and by e-mail but did not get any answer. The breakfast was delicious but I found hair twice in the food. It´s a brand new hotel with comfortable beds but the rest: know what to expect.

First I have to say that finding accommodation in Punta del Este is not easy. Most establishments don't answer their e-mail enquiries. Selection is very limited in Punta. Awa Hotel always answered their e-mails and were quick to reply. We stayed for 5 nights in mid December and when I enquired about rates I was sent an e-mail with a rate for a Superior Deluxe Room King Bed. When I returned the e-mail to reserve and book I was told a mistake had been made and the price was $60 US more a night. You can imagine that I wasn't very happy. After numerous e-mails Awa offered the room to me for $40 more than the original quoted price. As you can see we didn't start off on the right foot.

However ... many months later, we arrived and we were extremely pleased with the Awa Hotel. We arrived late at 9:30 pm after driving from Montevideo in the rain and we were tired. After checking in we headed for the restaurant for dinner and because it was a weekend, there was a guitarist playing and singing which was a very nice touch. Everything at the Awa Hotel is priced in US dollars which is a bit of a surprise. However you will soon find out that Punta del Este is a somewhat expensive resort town. Something neither of us were expecting from Uruguay. We had read about Punta but didn't expect the prices that came with the location. Anyway, back to dinner ... it was very enjoyable. My husband had pumpkin ravioli while I had Thai ginger chicken and both were very good accompanied with a bottle of Argentine Chardonnay.

Our room wasn't huge but it was adequate and we could get ready without tripping over each other too much. The room and bathroom were very clean. The hotel is very stylish from the lobby to the art throughout the hotel (you can see from the photos I will attach). My only complaint is that items in the bathroom such as the packet of kleenex supplied and package containing makeup removal pads would not be replaced each day. I had to ask every evening for these. Housekeeping should be informed that if these items are used that they should be replaced daily.

Breakfast was excellent with a vast selection of fresh fruit. The table is set with baskets of bread and plates of pastries, yogurt drinks, and cereals. You can ask for a cappuccino in addition to regular coffee. The juices were not freshly squeezed which was disappointing.

The hotel is in a residential neighborhood and is quiet. Parking is on the street but was always available. Many guests do not have a car rental. Wifi was available but did not always work in the room. It was just as easy to use their computers in the library.

It is not easy to find a good European style (boutique) hotel in Punta del Este. We stayed in the AWA for 7 nights after doing some research. Some friends of us stayed at 5* locations in the center and ended up in high price shabby establishments with unhelpfull staff. So we were glad to have picked the AWA.
In general we had a great week and enjoyed ourselves. The price-value-ratio is good.
Service is unpretentious, helpful and very responding.
Initially we good a street side room but asked for a pool side room - which was good. The street seems to get noisy in the morning so try to get a pool side room.
Rooms are of good quality and always very clean.
The location is good, but you definitely need a car in Punta del Este. A supermarket is nearby.

Pros:
- great atmosphere, very chilled out & Euopean style
- extremely helpfull and responsive staff - but not too much, just right
- wonderful breakfast - even to our standards ;-)
- bikes, umbrellas and deck chairs available for free
- good restaurant with fine wine list

Cons:
- only small pool area, but of course the sea is not far
- permanent but quiet lounge style music you cannot avoid anywhere (even late in the evening). In the last days they turned it off in the pool area which was great (it is fine in the patio and in the restaurant).

Suggestions for Management
1. We had dinner in the restaurant once and the food was quite good but it could be improved (i.e. more creative). Given the fact that it is quite hard to find a good restaurant in a nice location in Punta we feel that you could definitely score with a "La Huella" (Jose Ignacio) style restaurant. I would then also appreciate half board.
2. Please make the pool zone music free - it is more relaxing and quieter for the people in the rooms right above the pool zone; we all have iPods anyway ;-)

BTW. We stayed in Punta for a wedding and after a week in AWA went 30 km to Jose Ignacio (Posada del Faro) & liked that area better as we were not looking for Parties but just relaxing bech days. If you look for this as well, I would rather skip Miami-like Punta del Este and head north where you find quit deserted beaches and wonderful hotels. In general prices are higher in Punta del Este for anything, that's the trade off for being at a hotspot.

We stayed in AWA for two nights and the experience was great. The hotel is small, very charming and clean with friendly staff and a nice little restaurant. The rooms are not big, but very nice and well decorated. The location is not the best in Punta, but as the city is so small nothing is really far. Definetly recommend this hotel.
