The AWA was a decent enough hotel but not worthy of the high season rates for this property. The common areas of the hotel are very nice; however, the guestrooms require some more attention. Specifically, the furnishings, carpets, etc. were somewhat worn and the WIFI was spotty.
I would suggest renting a car to really enjoy Punta del Este and the surrounding area. Parking is provided onsite free of charge and hotel staff can provide you with free beach chairs, umbrellas and towels for outings to the beach, which is a plus.
We inquired at the hotel about restaurant reservations, specifically looking to dine out at El Mercado (near the port), based on a recommendation from a friend. The hotel told us the restaurant is in Montevideo and recommended Isidora instead for a good fish restaurant in the port. We dined at Isidora and were not super impressed, and happened to find El Mercado that same night just down the street by the port and stopped in for a small bite and loved it. We also enjoyed dining at Nuna (Peruvian - a little hard to find, but very special) in La Barra.More
