“Friendly hostel in centre of La Paz”
Reviewed 12 August 2014

Friendly hostel in the centre of La Paz, a few minutes walk from Plaza San Francisco. Rooms are very comfortable with hot showers. Good laundry service. Friendly staff. Ask for a room away from the road as it can get noisy quite early otherwise. There is a tour agency in the reception that we used to book bus, airport taxi and a tour with. The tour to Tiwanaku wasn't great - the guide was enthusiastic but rushed us along and spoke little English (we'd paid for an English speaking guide). We were back almost two hours ahead of schedule, including the time our cramped minibus was stopped by police for speeding and having insurance which expired in 2012! The site itself is interesting though.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the road

Sol Andino was like my base for my travels in Bolivia and it was a great change from bunk rooms at dorms. Good breakfast and clean rooms (and they even had HBO which was suprising). But the best part about it was Paula - who is the onsite travel agent. She is so helpful and really seemed to care about my time in Bolivia. When Red Planet (the best salt flats tour agency) was booked up, she called again and haggled with the lady to get them to make another trip for us. And when there was a road block that prohibited my bus from leaving La Paz, she helped me figure everything out. Overall, great place to stay and book onward travel from La Paz!

We had 3 night at the Sol Andino and had a good stay. The rooms are clean and have cable TV. There is wifi in the rooms and they offer a good breakfast. The showers are also super hot which was great after a cold day/night in La Paz. We enjoyed it so much we stayed there again after a tour to the salt flats and they were happy to store our bags while we were away.

One tip-ask for a room in the block at the back as they are much quieter than the ones at the front.

The hostel was located quite close to the main tourist area. The rooms were large and clean, although a bit cold. The breakfast was average, they will make eggs if you ask. Make sure you have cash, they don't take credit card.

We stayed 4 nights in a twin room with private bathroom

Pros
- The hotel is very very very quiet. If you are looking for a party hotel, you should definitively go to an other place :) If you want a peaceful place, so it is perfect.
- Room was cleaned every day
- Hot shower, wifi...
- Reception 24/24
- Staff speak a little bit english
- Good location near the witch market

Cons
- It is more an hotel than an hostel : no common area, no kitchen...
- Lack of charm
- You can find cheaper in La Paz...

I would highly recommend this hostal! We arrived early hours of the morning from a horrific overnight bus from Uyuni, my partner was sick on the bus. The hostal had 24 hour reception which was great and our room was available at 7am in the morning! The rooms are very spacious, the most comfortable bed I have slept in South America with plenty of blankets we were never cold. Staff were extrememly friendly & breakfast was excellent! Also the the lady at the tour desk was super helpful, very convenient to have. Location is great too! Walking distance to all attractions but tucked away down a small quiet street.

Hostal Sol Andino is a very comfortable place to stay. Rooms are big, most seem to have at least 3 beds, and are cleaned every day. We were always given fresh towels - a surprise. The shower was the best we've had in Bolivia - the only one where I had to turn on the cold tap! - and powerful. Breakfast was good, and buffet style - nice because you could help yourself to whatever you liked - fresh fruit, good bread, jam, cereal, juice etc. Eggs were a bit random, sometimes we were offered them, sometimes not. When you are offered them, they make them to order - fried or scrambled. Another nice touch - you can get tea at any time of the day. There is an urn, teabags and coco leaves in reception. Staff were very friendly and spoke a little bit of English. There is also a same-day laundry service and wi-fi worked in the room - even on the 6th floor. The location was great - 10 or 15 minutes walk to plaza San Francisco - lots of restaurants, travel agencies, souvenir stores nearby.
Another great plus was the travel agency. Paula was especially helpful, and always so friendly. She speaks English very well. We booked two tours through this agency - and both were excellent and good value for money. We were able to leave our rucksacks at the hostal while we went to Coroico for a couple of days.
The only small downside of this place, is that rooms facing the street can be noisy, and in general the building was a bit noisy - very thin walls. We were lucky that all other guests were quiet, but it's not possible to sleep after about 7am - people getting up, shutting doors, footsteps on the stairs etc. But this is not a party hostal, there is no common area. Not a good place to meet other travellers. In rooms at the back the TV reception is not very good. But overall a great place to stay. BOB 245 a night for double with private bathroom.

Room Tip: Ask for a room behind the front building. These are quieter, further from the street.
