By far the biggest asset this hotel has is its location. It is located at Plaza Estudiante – right at the southern tip of the Prado, the main street. From. The Socapachi area, where there are several good restaurants and nightspots, is just a few minutes walk away southwards.

The room was clean but there was a mini leak under the sink that became more pronounced over the four days I was there. The room was quiet as it was at the back of the hotel. Other people in my group said it was very noisy at the front. Breakfast was basic but adequate and the scrambled egg was a bonus although it tended to go very quickly.

In contrast to other reports I’ve read, I got excellent service from staff.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are much quieter

The service, location, and rooms were all average. It was about a 20 minute walk to the Iglesia de San Francisco. The rooms were clean, but dated. We were here for two days and it was difficult to find different restaurants for lunch and dinner both days. There weren't many near the hotel, unless you want fast food fried chicken. If you are looking for a budget hotel in La Paz, this place would be perfect. I would stay here again if I was in the area for a few days.

As the title says, I'm seriously puzzled as to who came to Hotel El Dorado, paid $50/night for a room and complained as bad as they did.
We stayed here as part of a tour organised accommodation and when we read up about this place on TA before our stay, we were worried.. But I can't express how wrong our preassumptions were.
The staff at the desk were ALWAYS pleasant and there are a few of them that can speak English for the people that can't speak Spanish. They give you the option, if available, to choose whether you want to be on the street side or back street side of the hotel. Definitely choose the back street side as the main road is loud until early hours of the morning.
There is even a lovely male that helps you with your luggage when you arrive and takes it up to your room with you and makes sure you're happy with the room.
We stayed in room 606 and it was more than adequate for the price you pay. If you can find faults in this room that are bad enough to say that it's NOT adequate then I'm sorry, you're picky and pretentious. The bed and pillows were comfortable and the shower always had hot water (the pressure was amazing).
The breakfast was good. Fresh fruit juices, fresh bread (different kinds available), fresh cooked eggs made to order and of course, coffee and tea.
The location is great and you can easily walk everywhere. Trying to get a taxi somewhere quicker than you could walk is sometimes impossible on that main road.
We were happy enough with our stay to stay here an extra two nights once we returned to La Paz. Maybe we have just learnt to appreciate the little things after backpacking for 9 months. To sum it up, if you're not picky and looking for a budget hotel in La Paz, give Hotel El Dorado a try.

After reading the negative reviews on Tripadvisor, I was a little concerned about staying here but I needed a budget hotel in La Paz and decided to stay here anyway. I seriously don't know what all the bad reviews are about....!?
The staff were SUPER friendly and helpful and even spoke English, the room was spacious and cleaned daily and had the best shower in Bolivia (always hot water and amazing pressure), cable TV with English channels, the breakfast was excellent (freshly cooked eggs, breads, jams, fruits, yogurts, cereal, tea and coffee), 24 hour reception with luggage attendant, perfect location and even room service!
Yes, the furniture is dated but I'm pretty sure they were updating this when I was there and yes, having a room above the main street is loud but you can request a room away from the road at check-in and you will not hear any road noise.
I was so satisfied with this hotel that I stayed here twice during my time in Bolivia and even brought friends with me the second time who were also happy with the accommodation.
Would definitely stay here again.

A friend highly recommended El Dorado, so despite its low rating on Trip Advisor, we decided to give it a try. It was barely adequate. We would not stay there again. Following are some pros, cons, and recommendations:

PROS:

The location is perfect. It is close to many attractions, sights, restaurants, etc.

I found the male staff member to be friendly and helpful (think he works at night)

CONS:

The woman at the front desk during the day and evening was downright rude. She had a snitty attitude and would shake her head in disgust if we didn't understand something. When we were checking out, we were trying to pay the change portion of our bill but didn't have enough Bolivianos so we tried to give her the amount in US change and she threw up her hands in disgust and dismissed us.

Unsafe practices. At one point, we entered the hotel and went to the elevator. One looked open and luckily we were paying attention to what we were doing because there was a man working down in the open, empty elevator. No tape, no warning sign, nothing.

The breakfast was barely mediocre. The coffee was terrible, the rolls were stale, and the fruit salad was mushy. To make matters worse, there were three female staff attending to the breakfast buffet and they laughed and giggled incessantly the entire time we were there.

The room was small and behind the hotel, there was construction going on until 9 pm each night.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Ask for a room that faces the back streets, not the Main boulevard

Don't eat the breakfast buffet. Instead, go up the street less than 1/4 mile and eat at Alexander's coffee cafe. They are like a Starbucks but serve all three meals. The coffee was excellent and I highly recommend the huevos rancheros. Only 18 Bolivianos (less than $3) and they were outstanding. The hash browns which we also ordered were just as good.

Look for another hotel! This one isn't worth the price!

Recommendation for the hotel: invest in customer service training for your staff. Also, don't have such a rude woman at the front desk.

Yeah it's okay. Beds fairly comfortable, bath ridiculously shallow and hot water not realiable. The lifts were noisy and could be heard whilst trying to sleep. Staff not all that helpful, English not widely understood and breakfast not worth eating considering how cheap some good breakfasts out are (look around and get recommendations). But all in all we didn't come to La Paz to enjoy the hotel so if you get a good price this is a great place to base yourself from in order to see an amazing city.

El Dorado is a budget hotel in central La Paz, its very basic but essentially clean and adequate and very handy for the main sites of La Paz and a decent base for exploring further afield. The rooms are basic but reasonably comfortable, staff are friendly and helpful and the breakfast minimalistic but again adequate especially if your suffering from the altitude sickness and lose your appetite. The main plus for me was the hotel keep oxygene cylinders which for me came in handy as i had a pretty bad time adjusting to the altitude affects, the downside to this hotel is it is on a very busy main road with constant loud traffic noise almost 24 hours a day, luckily for me i always take ear plugs on holiday and i ceratinly needed them the four nights i stayed here.

Room Tip: Remember your ear plugs.
