“charming nook in a touristic neighborhood”
Reviewed 10 November 2005

We stayed for two nights in the Rosario after spending three nights at the more business-like and modern Hotel Europa. The Rosario has an authentic Bolivian feel to it, with a charming courtyard, a quaint in-hotel restaurant, and thoughtful amenities such as hot tea in a room off the lobby. The staff were kind and courteous in arranging day trips for us.

The rooms at the Rosario are small-ish, and are not centrally heated (although they do have electric space heaters), which in July can mean for a cozy night under a layer of blankets.

The neighborhood of the Rosario is tourist kitsch, and somewhat noisy (as is most of La Paz), but it is central to the main interests of the city.

The feel of the Rosario -- its food, its decorative style, to its clientele (mostly European) -- is that of an international hostel for adults in Bolivia. It is not a place for those seeking luxury, but it is true to La Paz.

When I made my reservation months before, I requested a quiet room away from the common areas. What we got was a room (114) right off the lobby, probably one of the noisiest rooms in the place. However, the main problem was that the room had a musty, moldy sort of odor. When we came back to the room we always opened the window, which helped some. Breakfast and dinner at the hotel restaurant were very good, and the desk staff was helpful with phone calls, advice, etc. I arranged an overnight trip to Sun Island with a stay at Copacabana, and bus transport to Puno, through Turisbus, the travel agency at the hotel; this worked out great and was reasonably priced. Overall, the hotel is a good value in La Paz($39/night), but it seems to cater to large tour groups. My impression was that independent travelers do not get as good treatment as tour groups at the Rosario.

This is a lovely hotel in La Paz. The rooms are nice, clean and spacious. The staff are very friendly and helpful. There is lovely restaurant - breakfast is nice but dinner is great with a selection of local dishes and very reasonable. Use of internet is free and plenty of tea/coffee available 24 hours.

The location is great - witches market, the Coca Museum and lots of restaurants and shops are a short walk away.

This is a really nice hotel, with clean comfy, warm rooms, and nice bathrooms with everything working. The hotel is charming with character, yet the facilities seem modern. It's very well maintained, and nicely decorated. The staff are very helpful and friendly and the service good. There is a nice cosy little lounge area with lots of interesting books & local information, tea on tap, and free internet. The restaurant serves delicious food, and its well worth staying for a meal in one night. The location is also good, and I would go back. Some friends of mine stayed there the year before me, and they loved it too.

We booked our room well in advance, which turned out to be a good idea because the Hotel Rosario is very popular with tourists visiting Bolivia. Many tour groups begin at the Hotel (meaning the participants often book rooms there for convienance), so the lobby is often packed and the rooms are typically full. However, even when we needed to change our schedule around a bit the people at the front desk were exceptionally accomodating, even if they did need to call the hotel across the street to get us a room for the night (I can't remember the name of the hotel, but it's nice as well and a little cheaper- while you don't get the ammenities of the Rosario you are only steps away from it. Breakfast isn't included). The hotel is clean and much nicer than most places we stayed in throughout the country. The restaurant is very good and the included breakfasts are huge- but it gets busy. The tour agency in the lobby is very helpful and can book whatever you'll need. We stayed in two different rooms, both great, though the one on the fourth floor was cold, they did provide extra heaters. We left to Coroico for a few days, and the staff at the hotel was kind enough to hold our bags for us while we were gone. They were kept in a secure storage area and we reclaimed them later that week without incident. The location of the hotel is perfect, within walking distance to just about everything. Free use of the internet is a plus, and it's fast which we'd certainly missed by the time we arrived in La Paz. I'd definetly stay there again. We had to leave at 4 am and the staff at the hotel made sure a cab was there to pick us up and that we had something to eat before we took off. They went out of their way to make sure our visit was enjoyable. I recommend this hotel to anyone visiting La Paz.

The Rosario is nicely positioned near the Witches Market in La Paz.

This gets you off the main drag, which is good for noise and if there is a protest kicking off (there were several when we were there).

The Rosario has good clean rooms, with TV (about 3 channels in English - HBO WB and another).

The restaurant is very good, the Blovian special is great (a veal steak with rice and fries).

In La Paz, security is very important and there are no problems at this hotel. There is a 24 hour guard by the looks of things and the hotel staff are friendly and the desk clerk has good english.

No bar, but that´s not important as the rest of La Paz´s nightlife is a short walk away. The hotel will hold bags for you if your are exporing the country (eg. Salar or the jungle).
