Overall this is a clean and quiet hostel but we would not recommend it to others because of the hospitality of the receptionist and that it is overpriced. We stayed for 8 days and had several very poor experiences with the main receptionist, Paula and witnessed her getting into yelling matches with other backpackers too. All of the other staff were very pleasant and friendly and it's a shame they have someone with such poor hospitality running the hostal. It is also a little overpriced for La Paz and they could make more profits in the restaurant/bar if prices were more competitive. I like that they give free beer samples.

I guess the best part about this hostel is that it's not a party hostel, meaning you can get a good night's sleep. The staff wasn't quite welcoming, though far from unfriendly. My bed was not really good - massive mould in the middle. Also, wifi didn't work all too well. So if you really need a quiet place, it'll do. If you don't I recommend going across the street to the competition.

Beds were uncomfortable and rooms were cold. One of the bathrooms only ran cold water...Courtyard was nice. Service wasn't the best and breakfast was blah, even by hostel standards. Only saving grace was the location... But it was pretty loud in the evening and the church bells were annoying.

First things first, the hostel itself is ok. The setting is nice and is a lot quieter than the neighbouring wild rover hostel.

However, as nice as the hostel is, the owner is focused purely on money and has no regard, no care, for her customers.

We arrived around 10pm at night and requested a room for 5 people. We were told 400 each a night - which was slightly expensive for our budget but it was a nice apartment room. When we then when to check out we were charged 490 and challenged this price. Surely 5 sets of ears couldn't have all made up the same price? The meeting with the manager was a car crash and she didn't care. We ended up compromising - only after threats of calling the police - and stayed a few nights later in a smaller 4 man room.

When we booked this second room we paid a deposit ahead of our stay and made the receptionist write down the figure we needed to pay - as we had a feeling the money grabber overlord would try and stitch us up again. Sure enough when we arrived she told us the price had gone up "as they were very busy". Obviously we presented our receipt for the other price but she had no interest in respecting the signed agreement. Luckily the lady on reception had enough integrity to respect this and we paid the agreed price on leaving.

As to not be completely negative, the ladies behind the bar were kind and very helpful.

We wouldn't stay here again, it's not value for money and we have nothing but disrespect for the running of this establishment.

Pros: hot shower, and...hmmm
Cons: smelly room, dirty bathroom, unfriendly staff, overpriced, cold room, expensive food, weak breakfast

They refused to even call a taxi for us or give a damn when I told them our room smelled like cigarettes.

Myself and a few friends stayed here for 4 days in the same dorm. On the final day, I'd left my iPod to charge in the room. I was out with everyone from the room for lunch, we locked the door, so the only people win access to the room were employees. Came back to find the iPod gone with charger and adaptor. I informed the reception staff about what happened and to see if anyone had handed it in, they just glanced at each other and said no. Just thought I'd put this on to let people know to lock your things away at all times. Don't believe the sign on the front window either, the steaks are a joke.

Room Tip: There are no good rooms to choose from.

after arriving in la paz quite late and trekking around hostels for a room we came across Hostal Republica. They were also fully booked in the cheaper rooms but offered us the more expensive suit which by that point we accepted for a night. There was a group of us and the room was for 5 with a bathroom and kitchen area. This was great as it meant we could cook as the hostal did not include breakfast. The restaurant offered a nice selection of food just not a very varied selection and was fairly pricey. The room was nice and comfortable but very pricey, we ended up paying bs./110 per person per night. The staff were fairly polite and welcoming and the hostal had access 24 hours but I would not go back just simply for the price.

Room Tip: Try and book in advanced and go for one of the rooms on the upper level as it can get quite noisy.
