Decent hotel, small size with good service, nice breakfast, well appointed rooms. It is very near the Northern Bogota business, nightlife and dining areas, which is the best part of town for safety and convenience.

Great flat screen television in room. Odd room that it was very spacious, but had only a queen bed, not a king. Rather than outlets for dial up Internet, a hotel of this caliber should have high speed Internet in the rooms.

Room service good and fairly fast.

What was missing from the room was the basic hotel guide - how to dial the phone, etc. Spa products in the bathroom are very nice and upscale, but in very small sizes. Very poor that after my first night, they were not replaced and for my second morning, I had to squeeze the final drops from the shampoo and had no shower gel. I had to use the sink's bar of soap (soap bars, which fancy, are the size of a U.S. quarter - so small). Products that are used should be replaced. I did not notice until 5 a.m. when I went to take a shower so that I could check out and head to the airport and then I had to economize on what was leftover from the prior day.l

My husband and I stayed at Sofitel Victoria Regia ( in Zona Rosa) on December 1, 2006 for 1 night only, but we loved every moment of our stay.

We stayed at Hotel de la Opera in La Candelaria before for a few nights, but had we known about Sofitel before, we would have spent all our nights there - no doubt.

For those who are visiting Bogota and who are not backpackers, DO NOT STAY IN LA CANDELARIA! As much as we liked Hotel de la Opera (it is very charming and beaufifully restored), the area is practically dead at night and you would struggle to find a good restaurant to eat, unike Zona Rosa where you have a lot of really good options. La Candelaria is great to visit during the day, but you would be totally bored at night. Walking there at night was a bit spooky as there are not a lot of people living in that area (or willing to visit it at night, other than us - tourists!) plus they have police on each corner guarding the area as the President's palace is in that area as well.

Now back to Sofitel. As I said the location is fabulous - just 2 blocks from T-Zone in Zona Rosa that has a ton of GREAT restaurants, bars, clubs and shops. (We liked Balzac, which is a french restaurant there). The rooms are spacious, the beds are SO comfortable and the breakfast buffet is awesome. Plus you get nice lotions and other little Spa goodies and complimentary bottles of water in your room. I would note that we got the room on Expedia for about $115/night - which is a steal. I think the rack rate is more in the $200+ range. I have not researched the $200-300/night category, but I know that for about $105/night, it is a beter deal than Hotel de la Opera.

BEST LOCATION. Shopping, restaurants (Club Colombia), upper income.

HOTEL. Most comfortable bed & linen. French, and many of the expectations: bathroom, soap, shampoo, pan au chocolat.

ROOM. Small by North American standards, but not by Paris, NY, Hong Kong standards. Clean, comfortable. Good for 1, slightly small for a couple, but it is not really an issue.

ALTERNATIVES. Als try Le Boheme (same, 2 blocks better location, BUT not French). Dann Carlton (minus on location).

ON COLOMBIA. The best country, great people, y sí hablas español, es especial!!!...

A friend of a friend who lives in Bogota recommended this hotel for a last minute business trip. Traveled extensively throughout Latin America, but had never been to Colombia and was a little hesitant given the negative press. What a surprise!!! Really liked the city--parts of it, in the north section of town, reminded me a lot of residential streets in Madrid. Bogota really has lots to offer culturally and socially and it's a shame more tourists don't make it there, especially as the country has made large strides in personal safety.

The hotel, while small (99 rooms) is ideally located, about two blocks from the Centro Andino Mall. The area is full of restuarants, stores, theaters, etc. and I had no hesitation walking around late at night, along with the many, many people who were enjoying the cool Bogota nights. The staff is very helpful and courteous, especially the concierge on duty with whom I had only a brief conversation, but who managed to remember my name throughout my stay. The room was somewhat larger than your average chain hotel room and included a full mini-bar, in-room safe, over 70 tv channels, a dvd player, WIFI access and all other amenities you would expect from a hotel of this caliber. And while this is clearly a city, not an airport, hotel, they do offer a courtesy airport shuttle.

If I have any complaints about the Sofitel, it would be the room service. The quality of the food I ordered (dinner and breakfast) were both good (especially the breakfast) and it's offered 24 hours, which is a major plus. However, for some reason, the staff cannot leave the carts in the room, and at least at dinner, they will not leave a tray. I travel lots for business and lots of my hotel time, is my relax time. I like to eat on the bed watching tv, but that was impossible in this case, and the only way to eat the meal was at a table in the room from where the tv was not visible. Not fun when you're eating in a room by yourself. Further, as there's no cart or tray to leave outside the door, the dirty plates were in my room until the following morning. I could have called the restaurant to have them picked up, but by the time I'd finished eating, it was past 11 p.m. and I just wanted to sleep. They really should get a few trays; it would help. I also think the food selections were a bit limited as the dinner food seems to come from the French restaurant downstairs. I think adding some lighter fare, in addition to what's offered, wouldn't hurt.

Other than this minor complaint, I have nothing but good things to report on the Sofitel and would recommended it as the place to stay in Bogota.
