We had a very comfortable stay before and after our wonderful trip to the interior at this charming hotel. We really appreciated the hot shower and air conditioning especially upon our return! We were able to leave a bag at the hotel during our trip. The beds were great, the food good and the staff very helpful.

Room Tip: Do not stay in room 201. Very small and had a loud vibrating, hum coming from the ceiling. We reque...

Great place to stay but the dogs barking all night spoilt the experience. Good food and enjoyed sitting outside to eat with the added bonus of an outside bar. Rooms adequate but clean. The staff were very accommodating and the food was okay, not a great deal of choice in Georgetown but this is more than an acceptable hotel. 'Twas only the blessed dogs barking that tried to spoil the experience, not the hotels dogs but a neighbours who takes in strays.

Cara Lodge is a comfortable stay. The rooms are sizeable, air conditioned, and the linens are clean. The inside courtyard surrounding an old mango tree in charming. Each room has a well stocked mini refrigerator. My hot shower both days was divine.

I stayed a total of three nights at this hotel during my nature tour of Guyana.

This is a very comfortable hotel with an historic past, definitely not a stock Hilton or Holiday premises. Good quality rooms with decent bathrooms and toiletries. Comfortable beds. We ate in the restaurant and the quality of the food was superb, some of the best encountered in the country. The same at breakfast, where you have a choice of some lovely hot individual dishes (the poached Red Snapper was a real treat).

The staff are friendly and efficient. There are a number of restaurants in the vicinity and it was recommended to take a short taxi ride to these venues as it did not appear to be very safe at night in some areas.

Overall a comfortable hotel with a three/four star rating in my opinion.

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear of the Cara Lodge back onto residential areas so can be noisy.

My husband, a friend and I arrived at Cara Lodge at 2.30am after a long journey made worse by flight delays. The night porter greeted us with sandwiches and help with baggage.
The Hotel (although fairly new) is designed in the old Guyana style, with virtually everything made of wood and has Demerara shutters. The rooms are large, clean and comfortable, with well appointed bathrooms.
The staff were all friendly, and helpful and appeared happy to look after us, a service not always found in Guyana.
The food was a mixture of traditional Guyanese and world wide cusine (try the salt fish and bake for breakfast. I am disabled and although the stairs were a little dificult there was always help at hand.

Room Tip: although our room was above a road traffic noise was not a problem

A friend recommended me this hotel, I am glad i followed his advice, rooms are big, comfortable bed, AC works just fine , they also have a fan if you don't like to sleep with AC turned on.
Complementary sandwiches and fruit were waiting for me.

Breakfast can be improved, specially the buffet breakfast, add some other options, but it wasn't bad.

Safe box and good internet service is available, they guy at the frontdesk even asked how many devices do I have, in order to provide a valid user for both.

Certainly worth the money.

Room Tip: Higher floor rooms are better, less noisy

The hotel is a beautiful building that has charm, personality, and offers a relaxed atmosphere. The center of the lodge is a covered patio with a huge tree growing in the center. It adds a certain rustic appeal to the place. Here is where the Mango Bar is located. I had a few meals there and the food was decent, came out quickly, and service was good. The hotel rooms are spacious, have many windows with wooden shutters, wood floors, ceiling fans, flat screen TV, and free wireless internet! Housekeeping did a marvelous job keeping the room clean. The bathrooms were probably a bit more rustic than I expected. I kept the AC running in the room since it was so hot in Georgetown. However, the bathroom had a window with shutters but no glass. So it was sweltering inside the bathroom and I had to make sure to keep the bathroom door closed to keep mosquitos from venturing into the room. The best part about the hotel was the service. I found the staff very friendly and willing to help. I was greeted with smiles by every staff member I would encounter.

The hotel has no fitness center, which is disappointing. Another drawback is that the restaurant is open air, which is lovely except for the heat and the mosquitos. I highly recommend bringing bug spray with you!

Having stayed at other hotels in the area on previous trips, this has been by far my best hotel experience in Georgetown and I plan on staying here again.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The history aficionado will appreciate a stay at Cara Lodge, Guyana. It is one of the oldest and grandest structures in Georgetown, and is the best known and most popular hotel in Guyana. Cara Lodge was built in the 1840s and originally consisted of two houses. It has a long and romantic history and was the home of the first Lord Mayor of Georgetown. Over the years, the property has been visited by many dignitaries including King Edward VII who stayed at the house in 1923. He was of course later to abdicate and marry the American Wallis Simpson. Other dignitaries have included President Jimmy Carter in 1996, HRH Prince Charles in April 2000, HRH Prince Andrew in 2004 and Mick Jagger in 2005. This magnificent home turned hotel offers the tradition and nostalgia of a bygone era, complete with service and comfort of the most luxurious of hotels, all in a most congenial family atmosphere. Our signature dining establishment, the Bottle Restaurant, has been hailed as the best restaurant in the capital. It is open for lunch and dinner everyday, except Sundays. At Cara Lodge, we have worked hard to create a setting that is the perfect marriage of old world charm and contemporary comfort – ideal for the traveller wishing to experience a taste of Guyana’s past, and the business person wishing modern-day amenities. ... more   less
