“A place to see when you are in Suriname”
Reviewed 5 August 2012

Beautiful park, a must see. If you like nature, it s the place to go. Don't go with a simple car... you will need at least a Jeep! The road once you get there, for about an hour, is really, REALLY, rough! It s better to go white a guide... we had, my boyfriend and I, a private guide that our lovely Guesthouse Amice suggested and booked for us: the guide's name is Gerrit Sabaiz (you can email him at gerritbelg@hotmail.com) or call 5978537203. He was the BEST guide. Spoke well English and knew everything about the country and Brownsberg. And yes, we saw some venomous snakes, tarantula, poisonous frog, different types of monkeys and more... Don't be worry, your guide has all you need if you get bitten ;) If you book an online tour you will be with a lot of people. with him you can ask private of small group of 4. it's 65 euros, same price as the group, for a day tour, lunch, snack and water included. During our day visit, we were alone with nature... we came across a family at the end of the day and the was the only people we saw! that was amazing! Once at the top with the car, (top view is gorgeous) you will start your journey, and ask if you want to see Elena's waterfall of Leo... Elena is at 1h30 walk and Leo a 20 min walk... WITHOUT a doubt do to Elena's waterfall, you can swim, relax under the falls, it's beautiful, pure nature!! Leo waterfall is also nice but smaller. We did a day tour but you can also reserva an overnight... different options are available, i suggest the camping, outside of Brownsberg. Looks fun, swimming, fishing, BBQ and much more with the guide. You can also ask him to pass by his traditional village :) A must see!

“rough road, beautiful at the top”
Reviewed 19 July 2012

the road up to brownsberg is quite rough in places. 4WD and experience driving one is definately needed. the view of the lake is lovely. we drove up just for a day trip so im not sure of accomodation. we had a lot of animal sighting which was great, snake, agouti, monkeys. we walked to a waterfall. it wasn't too difficult even with a 6 and 4 year old. just have to be carefull as it is a bit slippery and a couple of steep spots.

“This is the jungle, makes no bones about it.”
Reviewed 20 October 2011

We arrived by bus. The driver had to turn the air-con off to get enough power to drive up the track leading to the reserve. He was continually telling visitors to do the same. It's essential advice for travellers in rented cars - turn your air-con off whilst driving up the hill. If you don't, you won't have enough power to make it. You'll see why when you get there. The park itself is BASIC. The shower was revolting, the sleeping accommodation revolting. However, you don't go there for the luxury. If that's what you want, go to Bergendaal instead. This is the real jungle experience without having to fly into the interior of Suriname. Once we'd seen the room we ventured off into the jungle - 47 of us. We were told to follow a path which would take us through the jungle to a stream where we could swim and then have to hike back again. It wasn't so simple as you can get off the track by mistake, so be careful to follow the track - it's not always easy to follow and the guide does not accompany you. When you get to the stream it's amazing to swim around in the fresh water. However, be careful to leave at least 2 hours before sunset - you don't want to be trekking back to camp in the dark of the jungle - some of a party had to do so - it's easy to get separated. Overall, 4-5 hours trekking in the jungle was an amazing experience. The awful accommodation pales into insignificance once you've done the trek - which is really the main purpose of being there in the first place.
