The fort is very well preserved. It details an interesting history of Paramaribo. There are many good photo opportunities in the fort. Plus, it is very near the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Especilly for the Dutch and other people who are interested in the history of the city, go here on a sunday. Then there is a tour with a great guy. He tells you about the history of the fort, but also about the city and country. He does it with a personal view.

I did the Sunday morning free guided tour and enjoed the story telling of the guide (though she was sometimes a little overdoing it). You understand the place better with the guide and it is really interesting to hear the stories about the slavery, the attack of the pirates and last but not least the december murders of 1982.
You should go here when in Paramaribo! It is such a historical place.

And really, what else are you going to do in Paramaribo? You may as well visit Zeelandia. There is a lot of interesting stuff here if you are a history buff. Suriname has a very fascinating history, and Fort Zeelandia was key in much of that history. Ideally, you would read a bit about the history of Suriname before you go. You will get more out of it. Fort Zeelandia itself is dark, depressing, and a bit bleak. But it is loaded with great displays relevant to the history of Suriname. Walking the ramparts also offers good views of the river.

This is a very interesting attraction to visit not only because of its age but its historical nature.
There is a sign that says the fort is from the 1740"s.
It also houses a small museum although nothing is in English
