“Matapica, a once in a lifetime experience to see turtles lay their eggs.”

We went to Matapica wich was under the controle of Stinasu but since the director of Stinasu was fired not anymore. Now Nature Management is controling Matapica.
On the beach of Matapica the turtles come to lay their eggs from february till july. You can book a tour with a touroperator it will cost you about 125 euro's but you can also go by yourself, that's what we did. We went on the bus from Paramaribo (from the Heiligeweg) to Meerzorg and there we took the bus to Marienburg, just tell the driver that you want to go to Johanna Margareta plantage and he will tell you were you have to get off. then take a boot to go to Johanna Margareta plantage this al cost about nothing. There you can go with Frits to Matapica, call him in advance he can arange everything for you to stay the night at Matapica, food, drinks, a tent or a hammock and he stayes there to, you get a guides walk to the turtles at night, this is a 5-6 km walk but it's amazing to see something like that a 1.5 meter turtle of 200kg on the beach.
Also the bootride to the beach is beautifull through the swamp with al sorts of births. You can also do a kaaiman tour at night. If you go with Frits and he arange everything for you it wil cost about 75 euro's and you help the local people if you go with the touroparator they wil get most of the money and do nothing for it. The telefoonnummer of Frits is 8245566 he lives on the Johanna Margareta Plantage.
