The friendly owner admitted to us that he had recently been concentrating on his other businesses. The receptionist was very helpful and charming, but a little patience is required from time to time. Breakfast was good. This hotel is in a fantastic location, very central but in a quiet street. It is within close walking distance of the river, Fort Zeelandia, the presidential palace, the market, tourist information, the palm garden, bus stations etc. This place will no doubt become successful when properly marketed with a website, and a lift (being installed), a lick of paint and a few decent reviews. The rooms towards the rear of the building are quiet and, although basic, are quite adequate for business or budget travellers. We were pleased to have a fridge in the room. Next-door is the Dutch pancake house, and close by are a selection of travel agents, bars and restaurants. For something different. try the Brazilian restaurant (we cannot remember the name nor the road but it was a few minutes' walk to the northeast of the hotel... look for the sign on the road "El Castillo")- very authentic excellent food and caipirinhas, and incredibly friendly staff.
