This place is just beautiful and a perfect place to relax. We stayed 3 nights, mid -week in an over the water bungalow. The colours of the lagoon are just incedible!
Check in was efficient with a receptionist waiting to greet us with a lovely cold fruit punch. While she explained to us the various facilities etc our luggage was taken to the bungalow. Some of the bungalows are a fair walk from reception and the restaurant but the water is so clear that there are plenty of fish etc to see as you stroll the boardwalk. However, it may be a consideration for some.
The bungalows are very spacious with a lounge, seperate bedroom and huge bathroom with a shower and a bath. Everything was very clean and the bed comfortable.
Breakfast, we ate outside by the pool looking out over the amazing colours of the sea.Breakfast and dinner are buffet style but we found there was plenty of choice. At breakfast, there was a chef who cooked eggs to order and in the evening there was one to cook steak etc and on one memorable night, frogs' legs! We didn't have lunch in the restaurant, having brought food and wine with us---thanks for the tip from other reviewers :). The restaurant and particularly the wine prices are expensive but that appeared to be the norm for New Caledonia.
We watched beautiful sunsets on our deck but if you are tall beware of the low thatched roof as you come out of the door! Also beware of the sea snakes which are amphibious and can give one quite a fright when they decide to sunbake on the balcony. However, they are timid and although highly venomous, their mouths are too tiny to inflict a bite. They are all over the island too and we saw many of them as we walked around the island. As the lagoon is a Marine Park, they cannot be controlled and we did get used to them.
Snorkelling off our steps was amazing; so many colourful fish and coral gardens plus each evening we were visited by turtles, very special.
The birds on the island make a horrendous noise especially just after sundown and the sound is like wailing souls lost in purgatory--rather unnerving at first. You can see their burrows all over the island.
We had a great time at L'Escapade with perfect weather and found the staff friendly, helpful and appreciative of our attempts at French (most can speak some English).
There is a gift shop near Reception but it was never open which was a shame as it looked like it had some interesting things to buy.
In summary, we had a great time, would go back there again. I'd advise taking some food with you for lunches,(there is a fridge in the room), snacks and wine for watching sunsets etc.
