“Great view, pity about everything else”
Reviewed 21 September 2013

We stayed at 3 hotels in noumea over two weeks in August 2013. Casa del Sole is well located, with a short walk to either baie de citrons or anse vata. Our view from the 15th floor was amazing, however it wasnt enough to justify the price. The interior of our apartment, whilst very spacious was quite run down and the kitchen was infested with ants. At a lower price, I would have been happy.

After 1 night we moved on to the best western la prominade. There is no comparison between the two hotels, with la prominade being far superior for a similar price.

To sum up the experience at casa del sole, its the sort of hotel where the only service you will get it the friendly reminder call at 9am to check out by 11. We are not fussy travellers, so I thought the other poor reviews of this hotel could be people with expectations that are too high. Its not, believe the other reviews and stay elsewhere

Room Tip: High floors have an amazing view

We stayed in a one bedroom apartment for 7 nights. It was on the 16th floor with amazing views of the Baie des Citrons. It was spacious with a well equipped kitchen and large balcony. It was noisy at night due to the open air bars and clubs but with the windows closed, air con on and some earplugs I slept quite well. Buses run along the seafront but there is no information at the stops. However the tourist office is a short walk away and the person there spoke excellent English. The staff at the hotel reception tried to be helpful but with our limited French and their non existent English it was difficult at times. We managed to find a supermarket about 20 minutes walk away. The hotel shop is very limited and open very restricted hours. All in all a good place to stay but it helps if you understand some French.

We stayed on the 9th and 14th floors over 11 nights. The apartments were spacious and clean and had excellent sea views on both sides. There was no servicing of our room during this time and requests for clean towels needed to be made at reception.
The location is excellent apart from the noise. The hotel sits on a narrow peninsular with the bay of lemons (baie de citrons) and Anse Vata bay on the other side.
I had read the reviews on this site before I departed and requested a room on the ninth floor or above to avoid noise from the nightclubs on the baie de citrons side. However it is simply not true that you can avoid the night club noise by staying on the higher floors. The night club does not restrict it's loudest music to Friday or Saturday nights - apart from Monday nights - it is any night. Not all ninth floor apartments are carpeted either. We soon moved to the anse vata side which has less pretty but still great views. Unfortunately the vacant section in front of the hotel on this side is a meeting and drinking place for locals on Thursday to Sunday nights. On one night the police were eventually called to break up fights but on other nights we were woken to honking horns and repeated choruses of "bonjour " after midnight. It did not make any difference whether you were on the 9th or the 14 th floor.

Personally for my family, we found Casa Del Sole to be a home away from home. Having a couple of troubles with our travels, having to stay longer then first planned, the stuff where more then welcome to help us out. We stayed in three different rooms during our 13 night stay on levels 12, 14 and 4. Honestly, my favourite room view wise was the level 14 one with an incredible view out onto bay de Citroen. Noise was definitely a problem on level 4, which we stayed our last 2 nights in.
The staff where incredibly helpful, even though there was definitely a language barrier between us a most of the staff. Asking for extra things was never a problem win the staff more then happy to help. We become quite fond of our half Aussie half New Caledonian friend on reception who had a great sense of humour.
Overall, me and my family thoroughly enjoyed our stay at casa del sole, and believe it should have more stars then the one it has been assigned.

Room Tip: Code a higher room. The rooms from level 8 up have incredible views looki out to both Anse Vata and...

We were obliged to book into the Casa Del Sole as this was where our team was based during a recent sporting event.

We made our booking through Wotif, as this was cheaper than booking directly with the hotel. However, upon arrival, we were told that our booking was for a basic 2-bdrm rather than a deluxe 2-bdrm apartment. Thus, we found ourselves in a stuffy apartment on the 4th floor, with views mostly over a roof. The chap at the check-in counter made a note of our complaint and told us that the people who would be working on reception the next morning could review the situation for us.

First thing next morning, we took up the issue of our allocated apartment with the lady on reception. Her first response was that we had only booked into a basic apartment but, after I showed her our printout of our Wotif booking, she said she'd sort the issue out. By the time we'd eaten breakfast at the small shop/cafe at the base of the hotel, the problem was sorted. The difference between apartment 406 and 1403 was like night an day. We went from a dark, stuffy apartment to one in which there really are panoramic views from every window. Note: the difference in cost between the two types of apartment was only about $20 a day and so very worth it, in my opinion.

I feel it important to note that both apartments were spotlessly clean and the washing machine in the apartments made it convenient to throw in a load each night and not worry about trekking home with a suitcase full of laundry. As for the noise, we were more bothered by a Saturday night in-house party, in an apartment near to ours, than we were with outside noise. Having said that, there was a group of locals, with a boombox blaring, at the base of the hotel one morning. But the noise only started at about 7 am and we needed to get up anyhow.

"The New Caledonia Weekly," the free tourist newspaper, gives Casa Del Sole a 2-star rating which is an accurate reflection of the amenities. Families in our group who toggled between the Casa Del Sole and La Promenade said that they thought that the Casa Del Sole was better value for money.

As for Noumea generally, it is very small but the people tend to be quite helpful. Beware that it is virtually impossible to find a good map. We collected 3 tourist maps, in all, and only the last (the official tourist centre map) showed all the sites that we were interested in -- like the Tjibaou Cultural Centre -- but they all showed places like the currency exchanges, McDonalds, duty free, etc. Fortunately the same lady on reception who fixed out room problem was also able to indicate locations on the first two of our maps of where we wanted to go. Note: the tourist office has the best map and it's free.

In conclusion, the Casa Del Sole is a good choice for large, family-friendly, clean apartments with great panoramic views. But be prepared to have to stop up on basics like toilet paper, dish detergent, etc., once you get here.

Room Tip: Pay the extra 1500 xpf per night and be rewarded.

Just got back from a four day stay in this apartment block and this was our third visit to Casa del Sole. We thought we had cracked the code with this hotel. If you get an aprtment on or above the ninth floor then the floor is carpeted - this significantly reduces noise from above and next door. On this trip we had the penthouse apartment. This time however, the open space in front of the hotel has now become a meeting place for drunken-drugged up local youth. This happens every night and is accompanied by high volume music from their cars until the very early hours of the morning (5am at least). On Friday night (before we left) there were over 50 youths blocking the access road to the hotel all night. They were doing damage to local property, stopping cars from gaining access not only on the side road but on the main road and screaming like banshees in addition to the music. No police were called and there was no control exerted over this crowd. We were worried what condition our hire car would be in the following morning it was that bad.

The condition of the hotel became a secondary issue but it has become tired. The settee and chairs were loosely covered in some blue material to hide the damaged suite. There were no glasses of any kind in the kitchen. The fridge had been through a war. The microwave had that yellowed look of being very old. The bathroom towel rail was hanging off the wall. Having said that the apartment was large (two bedrooms), the beds were comfortable, we had a washing machine and full kitchen, the staff were pleasant and helpful and the view and location were excellent. Something we hadn't realised on our last trip but the supermarkets are closed for sales of alcohol on Wednesdays and Fridays so stock up. It's a real shame to have to write this review but Casa del Sole needs an upgrade and they need to do something about the crowds outside the hotel as I think this would put many travellers off.

Room Tip: Get a room on or above the ninth floor and away from the open ground at the front of the hotel (sadl...

Just spent 7 nights at Casa Del Sole in Noumea. Situated on the point between Baie des Citron and Anse Vata, it was an excellent location.

Be warned that it does get incredibly noisy on Thursday to Saturday nights. The bars and clubs are open until the early hours of the morning and the locals enjoy using the open field below as a drinking spot. I always travel with ear plugs anyway so it wasn't too much of an issue for us. You could close the verandah doors and this minimises the noise but that would be a waste of a stunning sea breeze. The apartment location and views we had from the 13th floor looking out to Anse Vata beach more than made up for the noisy nightlife. The two bedroom apartment was incredibly large for the 3 of us, with a huge bathroom and extra toilet.

It is a self service apartment so ensure you buy some extra toilet paper, dishwashing liquid etc. The oven was not really usable as they had cleaned it with oven cleaner but this left a chemical odour which I wasn't prepared to cook my food in. With another clean it would have been fine but the microwave proved an easier alternative. The washing machine was excellent and meant I could have brought less clothes for more shopping space!

Groceries - there is a Casino supermarket at the Port Plaisance Shopping Mall or a Carrefour near the South Marina (Port Du Sud Marina). About a 30 minute walk one way so take a taxi or the bus goes past Port Plaisance anyway. Alternatively there is a little shop at the bottom of the apartments (closed on Mondays) where you can buy some basic items including bread and pastries in the morning. Please note, brush up on your French as English is not spoken by the shop keeper. For stunning pastries there is a FANTASTIC boulangerie located about 20 minutes walk (one way) on Route d'lAnse Vata which opens at 5am for fresh bread. Pastries out later. The walk takes you past La Promenade where you can get a good espresso or croque monsieur.

Never used the pool as the beach is a 2 minute walk away. Great to have a choice of both sides to suit wind direction. Our pick for snorkeling if you are not going anywhere further out is Ile aux canards. Go with the glass bottom boat group near the Quick Restaurant as they are significantly cheaper and were easy to deal with. Also Quick has free wi-fi. Do the right thing though and buy something from there, don't abuse the privilege.

We will definitely be using Casa del Sole again as a base for more travel to this magnificent island. Remember, Noumea is not New Caledonia just as any city is not the sum of a country.

Room Tip: Go higher up (higher price) and on the Anse Vata side for slightly less noise.
