“Would stay here again!”
Reviewed 20 May 2014

Views are amazing, the staff are great and the refit makes the Clifftop rooms a fantastic choice. Falling asleep to the waves crashing below was bliss. The staff were so helpful and understanding when a short 5 min Mothers Day call somehow got billed as a 9 hour marathon worth over $2K. It was no problem for the Matavai staff when we questioned it, they already had made steps to reverse the charge! Food was great and reasonably priced too, compared to Auckland prices. Would recommend to anyone.

Room Tip: Go for a Clifftop, its worth the little bit extra.

A great resort with superb views. We were in room 19 , large and spacious with a quiet mode on the air conditioner. The resort has a large deck area overlooking the ocean . You will need a car to visit all the areas of interest on the island but that's not a biggie. Continental Breakfast is included. Clean and very quiet.

Matavai's buildings and balconies are so cleverly nestled into a landscape of surreal beauty that its hard to believe it's real. Particularly when playful schools of dolphins start frolicking and leaping in the crystal clear water below the resort, just beyond a spectacular reef. The staff are helpful and friendly. The food is good and the place had a nice feel of resort luxury while also remaining down to earth and personal. A great place to chill out. Totally recommend it.

I had never heard about Niue but had the chance to go there with work.
I stayed a week with my crew and partner and loved every second of it. Forget mobile phones and touristy sandy beaches, this is a rocky oasis where the locals are your best friends and the scenery is just amazing.
You will learn a new way to relax and will hardly spend a cent as there isn't much to spend it on. Bring your own alcohol duty free and save some money, and do yourself a favour and go to church, yes I mean it...on Sunday morning. Their singing is something not to ever be forgotten.

The Matavai Resort is the best place to stay on Niue. We stayed in a garden room which was modern, spacious, had sea views and was not far from the pool. A friend was in the more expensive superior rooms, which while bigger, they didn't really merit the additional cash.

All rooms have a Samsung TV which we were able to plug in a hard drive into so could watch our own content. The alarm clock also had an ipod dock which was good for playing our music in the evenings. The also had double plugs which was great for charging multiple devices.

The Matavai Resort grounds are very well maintained and there are two swimming pools. It was lovely to see many Niuean families bring their kids to play in the swimming pools during the day.

The resort offers evening entertainment such as a movie night, Uga crab demonstration and cultural show which were enjoyed by a number of people.

However, it was the small things that let the Matavai Resort down. Overall the room was clean, but the tiled floor in our room was very dirty, and glasses we had used during the day were not cleaned for two days running. Be sure to have an early breakfast as the pastries disappeared very quickly!

The menu was limited, and it would be good to see more traditional dishes and incorporation of local ingredients on the menu. When we asked to swap shimp for an egg on the surf and turf, this seemed to be a problem, but the lovely Nicky sorted it out quickly. Modern Niuean cuisine focusses primarily on Fish & Chips, Burgers and Pizza which becomes tiresome after a week.

We also got information from the front desk that was not very precise. Ourselves and another couple seperately tried to find the set of three Hikutavake rock pools, but were not successful. The resort issues a newsletter every night, but it would be good to have a map indicating where to find the mentioned features.

Thank you for your informative review. I have mentioned your comments to our housekeeping team who will ensure they focus closely on the details. The kitchen team will be working to ensure no one misses out on pastries, a second oven arrives on the next supply boat so we will have larger capacity to work through busy times. We have added a map to the concierge corner to show anyone struggling with locations where the key spots are around the island> Hopefully you will be back to see all the improvements soon.

Resort
As other reviewers have said Matavai Resort is perfect for an island getaway. It has everything you need and it's very clean, we couldn't fault it. Our rooms were modern and we slept well in the super comfortable beds. The staff were all friendly and very helpful at the front desk. The restaurant service is pretty slow so those who struggle with 'island time' may find some of the waits frustrating. The location is good - you are not far from town and snorkelling spots.

Island
We were pleasantly surprised how much there was to do. Make sure you hire a car and get out and about. There are heaps of snorkelling spots and walking tracks leading to caves and chasms to explore. Town (Alofi) offers plenty of choice for eating out. The dolphin swim was awesome with the dive shop right next door to Matavai. Although not commercialised like some of the other islands, Niue is well set up for tourists with very clean (and flushing) toilets, and showers dotted around the island by tracks and snorkelling spots. You are well catered for.

We has such a good time we will definitely be back for more.

We appreciate your fantastic review of the Resort and Island. The whole country is working together to create that perfect experience both in and out of the resort so your comments are well appreciated. I have a trainer in our restaurant from next week to work on our 'island time service' I appreciate that when you come form a fast moving hasty world it can be frustrating so I am certainly looking to improve this over the busy whale season ahead.

Matavai Resort was a fantastic place to stay. We stayed in one of the superior ocean view rooms and it was perfect. The room was really spacious and equipped with a fridge and a safe. It had the best air conditioner and fan we have ever had. The shower was also the best we have ever had in a hotel/motel. Great water pressure and very spacious so easy to rinse out flippers, swimming togs etc. Desk and chair, couch, super king sized bed and our own verandah equipped with a washing line, tables and chairs. Superb. The resort pools, pool bar, deck areas and lobby etc were also great. So spotless, clean and functional. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and daily newsletters made sure you knew what was happening around the island. Nothing was too much trouble and everyone went out of their way to make sure you had a great time. Would really recommend hiring a car (Alofi Rentals were great). It is about 62km to drive around the island and you need to be able to drive to all the swimming/snorkelling/walking/scenic spots. You need sturdy shoes or reef shoes to walk on the reef as the coral is very sharp. There are no sandy beaches. The water is just so warm and clear and there are amazing caves and rock pools to explore. Most of the walks are signposted with nice new signs showing photos of the area and many even had flush toilets complete with toilet paper, running water and hand wash! No litter or graffiti here. In fact you usually don't even see anyone else on these walks - you have paradise to yourself. Limu Pools, Matapa Chasm, Avaiki Cave, Hikutavake rock pools and Togo Chasm and were among our favourites. Alofi has some great restaurants to eat at but make sure you book as they aren't always open and some full up quickly. Niue is a striking, beautiful, friendly, restful place to visit.
