My girlfriend and I had just finished working in Malaita province and we're passing through Honiara. Many of the other volunteers recommended going here. Worst mistake ever. The atmosphere was terrible: it was full of rich spoilt expats and way way over prices. It had a total snobbish feeling to it and there wasn't a single local is sight. We were so disgusted that such a place existed in such a poor country that we just walked straight out without even looking at a menu. I shan't be returning anytime soon.

In Honiara Lime Lounge Cafe

Another refuge for latte starved ex pats in Honiara is the Lime Lounge. Most of the local eating establishments follow a well worn path of "traditional" fast food production, fish and chips, chicken and burgers with lashings of coca cola or fanta, These joints are not for the faint hearted if you are conscious of your BMI and trying to eat "healthy"

The Lime Lounge is located in downtown Honiara close to the junction of Mendana and Commonwealth Streets.

The Lounge has been around longer than the Breakwater and is a bit of a Honiara institution. Though my personal favourite Honiara cafe the Breakwater the Lounge is well worth a visit. Decor is getting a bit tired and dated with green and purple walls adorned with various "art" work, Cork tile floor gives away the fact that the Lounge has been around a few years now. Ambience definitely cosy. Air con backed up with fans keeps the environment pleasant. Aluminium topped tables with matching chairs ensure reasonable comfort. The odd pot plant, bamboo or other provide some foliage, (and probably cover for aedes aegypti - the main Dengue vector), In the corner there are a couple of sofas for the Lounge Lizards to sprawl out and check the library or read the paper.

Clientele mainly ex pats with a few locals swanning in. In one corner there is a book shelf, some magazines and there were a few dated copies of the Courier Mail available if one had a hankering to find out what happened in Queensland a week ago.

Coffee comes in all the usual shades - expresso, cappuccino, latte, flat white etc plus a range of teas. The other great strength of the Lounge is its range of cold drinks, smoothies, frappes all good value and made from fresh fruit.

Backing up the liquid delights is a good range of cabinet food, sandwiches and slices. The kitchen can produce a variety of burgers and a range of salads such as caesar, chicken, thai beef, tuna etc. Price of a cold drink and a salad about $22.

Staff are pleasant and friendly and seem to try hard.

Upside
Good coffee
Very good range cold fruit based drinks
Better than average food
Friendly Staff

Downside
Close to the road - fumes traffic etc
Closes at 4pm weekdays and 3pm weekends
No wi/fi!

Would I go back again - Yep

Disclosure: this Review is based on three visits, a brunch, a lunch, and the other visit for coffee. Prices in Aussie $.

The Lime Lounge seems to have picked itself up after a couple of years in the doldrums with a refreshed menu and new management. Probably the best option in town once again.

I'm a regular here now and I just love it every time I go! Authentic and healthy menus. Staffs are friendly and helpful. The restaurant itself is clean and most importantly air conditioned! With the brutal heat outside, nothing beats sipping on a delicious coffee and gazing through the windows of Lime Lounge! If you are visiting Honiara for business or leisure, this place is definitely recommended.
