I stayed twice in July 14 with a group of 7 while transiting Honiara. The Chester was clean, comfortable and convenient. The group had both twin share standard rooms and my wife and I had a self contained room. The rooms are spacious, the amenities basic but clean and well maintained. They have flyscreens and ceiling fans. Self contained rooms have a bar fridge, sink and table suitable for basic food preparation but not cooking. At least one of the standard rooms was air-conditioned. Towels, soap and shampoo are provided but the hot water appears reliant on solar heating.
Prices were very reasonable with the standard room being less than half the cost of the self contained. There is a shared kitchen area on the top floor with fridge and gas stove, also a table lounge and TV.
Chester House is located on the hillside above the port. It is best located, when on foot, by going down the street opposite the port's fuel tank farm (there is a nice little bakery on the corner) and as the road bends to the right going left into the area of the Seamen's Mission. Walk across the front of the Mission house and behind it in the left back corner is a set of stairs up to the forecourt of Chester House. The locals use this path regularly.
