Sunset Lodge is the only commercial accommodation on the volcanic island of Savo, in Iron Bottom Sound, a short boat ride from North West Guadalcanal. It is a base for tours of the hot springs, volcano, and unique megapod bird nesting sites, which cost extra.
There is a ground level open lounge/dining area, and the meals (also extra) are great, as well as beach-side chairs and hammocks.
The sleeping accommodation is in a two-level lodge at the top of a newly built, but rather uneven concrete staircase with no handrail. Rooms are clean, with either two singles or a double bed, and a balcony. Bathrooms are shared, and just adequate (cold showers, but flush toilets).
If you are scared of creepy-crawlies, watch out for the crabs which lurk in the entrance.
For village accommodation, this is of a good standard. It is completely locally owned.
The owners provide hilux transport from Honiara to Vila village, where you are met by the lodge's outboard. Staff from the local village are lovely, friendly and helpful.
