“Good basic hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 July 2014

We spent one night here after arriving on a late flight. At 10pm the staff were friendly and welcoming and helped settle us in, although there were no restaurant or bar facilities open. Room was clean and tidy and adequate for the one night stay. Very good breakfast and worth having. Close enough to walk into town.

Room Tip: If we were staying longer than one night we would choose a room overlooking the ocean. The rooms at...

Nuku'alofa in Tonga runs on Pacific Time, and there is nothing wrong with that.
The Little Italy Hotel also operates in the same time zone but given that they are rated as a 4 star hotel, they need to lift their game. The rooms are clean, the staff friendly and the food fair.
It is well located, with wonderful views of the coast and outer islands. It's only a 20 minute walk into the main town, circumnavigating the impressive Royal Palace and gardens.
Plan your Sundays well as there is nothing to do, except go to church. On Sundays the hotel only provides a boxed breakfast, the dinner offering is limited and lunch is non existent.

Room Tip: Book a balcony room and the roosters, pigs and dogs won't keep you awake at night.

We stayed 5 nights at this very cute hotel.
The staff were very friendly and helpful, a little slow at times but that is Tonga.
It is really the best hotel on the island at the moment so there is nothing else to compare it with.
The food in the restaurant is good basic italian.
The rooms were very clean but basic. The hot water could come and go.
It is only 3 floors high and I suggest you try and go for the 3rd floor if possible as power lines are in your face with others and you can be seen by the passers by on the pavement across the road.
You can walk into town in about 15min or you can hire a cab if you are in a hurry.
You can rent cars from the hotel but if it is a sunday book the day before as you cant get petrol on sunday and you can only get a car that has petrol in it.

Room Tip: Go for a room on the top floor and facing the lagoon.

I stayed here for 7 nights on business. I chose a room with the sea view and balcony and this was definitely a good choice. I had room 13, which was definitely not unlucky.

For anyone thinking this is a full service hotel of the type you would find in a major city, please think again and remember where you are.

This is a small hotel and offers a good service, with good helpful friendly staff throughout. I have to stay that Manase Tafea was a star. He always seemed to be there and nothing was too much trouble for him, I hope the owners appreciate him as much as the guests do.

Just a few pointers. The hotel restaurant does not open for lunch, so you will need to find somewhere else and there are plenty of places in town, which is a pleasant 15 to 20 minute walk. Friends is one to recommend, and i review that separately.

Tonga is a society in which the church is very strong and influential. Sunday is very much a church and family day, when nearly everything on the island is closed, even the airport. The hotel does not serve breakfast on a Sunday, but does place an adequate breakfast in the room on Saturday evening. The restaurant is only open for guests on Sunday evening. The choice in the restaurant is good and also good value.

The rooms have fridges and mini bars, as well as a kettle and tea/coffee making facilities.
They are comfortable and cleaned every day except Sunday, to a good standard. You can get an airport pickup for 30 pa'anga (less than £10). In discussion with the locals, this is considered to be on of, if not even the best place to stay in Tonga.

One small beef is that the Internet was free to guests, however the structure was such that you had to keep going back to reception as there was a usage limit, which always seemed to expire at the wrong time. Service was a bit flaky but hopefully this will improve as there is now an underground cable link from Fiji.
Overall, I judge a hotel by whether I would return and given the chance, I would

This was our first trip to Tonga, and, after completing a tour of the island, we concluded that Little Italy was definitely a great choice of accommodation. The rooms were of a reasonable standard, and were equipped with air-conditioners, which was great; the beds were also very comfortable. The best feature of the hotel is definitely the restaurant - the food was very good, and we ate here several times. Whilst it is definitely the place to stay in Tonga, I am not sure that it compares to other 4 1/2 star hotels in which we have stayed in other parts of the world. The rooms were a little dated, and on several occasions we had to go down to reception and ask for more soap, shampoo, etc. because the bathroom was not always adequately restocked with supplies. Plan ahead if you want a hot shower - it takes a while for the water to heat up, and once it does, the showers are still not great!

Great aspects: great food, friendly staff, close to town, air-conditioning, comfortable beds.
Room for improvement: unreliable wi-fi, small pool, limited tv channels, poor showers.
Keep in mind: We stayed over the Easter period - pretty much everything is closed on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Room Tip: Definitely try and book a room facing the ocean. My husband and I had a view of the ocean, complete...

We stayed twice here going and coming to the states. We wanted to pamper ourselves with air conditioning and a nice room. We found it! The bathroom was large and clean. The staff very friendly and accommodating. We are a family of three so needed a cot for daughter. On our return trip all the cots were in use so they gave us the family rooms that connect at no extra charge. The extra space and bathroom was a real treat! Then because our flight was the early one 7am and we would miss breakfast, they brought us a lovely food basket the night before full of juice, fruit, cereal, even milk. Very thoughtful. The only reason I gave a 4 was because the desk staff was very slow and the restaurant is not air conditioned.

Room Tip: I would suggest a room not facing the road. Ours overlooked the pool and the only sound we heard wa...

We stayed here the night before we flew back home. Extremely clean, comfortable, air conditioned, with friendly staff who speak English very well. Added bonus was the on-site restaurant with an exceptional menu and wait staff and a lovely view of the waterfront. Added bonus was the breakfast buffet included in the price of the room. Would definitely stay there again
