Tropicana Lagoon Apartments Resort

Reviewed 20 September 2013

This property is great for people looking for a peaceful and relaxing holiday out of the main area of Port Vila. It has a lovely location on the second lagoon and the rooms are relatively clean and roomy and the restaurant is right on the lagoon and it is beautiful to be sitting and watching the underwater life whilst you eat your meals. The pool is small but as this is not a resort do not expect a resort style experience. The kitchen in your room is suitable for cooking your own meals and there are barbeques as well for entertaining outside your beachside room or on your balcony although mine didn't have a gas bottle attached I'm sure this could have been arranged as the staff are most helpful. Flora is the operations manager and is full of information and advice to help you enjoy daily experiences around the island. I was travelling alone and found it reassuring when they provided me with regular, reliable bus drivers (small vans) to travel to destinations safely and eventually I was able to just get into ones on the main street in Vila or outside the property to travel to or from town myself as the locals are friendly and helpful too, You are on an island so remember this when travelling yet the food is great in many resorts and restaurants around the island so it is worthwhile going out for lunch and dinner. You can source gluten free bread from a small french bakery off the main road but a driver will have to help you find this or your host as it is not "La Patissierrie". The beds in Tropicana are a little hard but it is a solid mattress and extra pillows or blankets can be provided and I was surprised to have air con as well as fans yet did not need it as it was a little cool at night and only mild weather and a bit overcast and rainy at times when I was there so the humidity was only setting in mid September and the good weather. The weather is tropical though so it was warmer than Melbourne so I was happy with this. You can kayak up and down the lagoon to explore and see other places and people on the lagoon and expect to hear and see the local islanders everyday as they live opposite you at this location and swim, fish and cook and clean here as well and this appears to be while many visitiors do not swim in this lagoon and rubbish can also be seen floating up and down it and underneath you in the kayak which is a great shame really as it is beautiful in parts and better than a chlorinated pool. The beach is small and manmade out of local coral sand. To go walking you need to have good shoes on as you will have to leave Tropicana to go to the main road which is full of pot-holes and uneven tracks and it is best to get to another location to experience good walks such as Eton beach and other parts of the island where you will need to drive to by car or bus. Regardless Efate is a beautiful island and Tropicana is great for the independant traveller or mature family groups or friends as it is not really suited for children as it has limited facilities for them. Enjoy the view of the palm trees, hibiscus and lagoon, the sounds of the island and the tranquility of this location. There is no phone in your room but wi-fi is free and the TV is adequate for some. Walking to reception to get information or anything you requested was part of the exercise and expect to pay for bottled water. The shower pressure was good at the time I was there but not many people then as out of Australian school holidays and this was the best part of it as I wanted a peaceful, stress free holiday and this is what I got thanks to Tropicana!

Room Tip: Studio rooms on the beachfront will be a bit noisy due to the village on the other side but you get...

I stayed at Tropicana between the 30th of August and 13th of September 2013 and honestly cannot rate the place highly enough. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome and relaxed, with a tropical mocktail to welcome us and our bags taken to our room for us. Our rooms were spacious and clean with just incredible views over the fish and starfish filled lagoon, and fresh tropical flowers were laid on our beds and in the bathroom.
The rooms are cleaned immaculately every day by staff who seem to have a knack of knowing when you have left your room so you are never disturbed and the on-site restaurant sells incredibly tasty and well priced food- with the added bonus of sitting above the water and watching the fish swim about below you as you eat! Nothing is too much trouble for the staff and town is just a 10 minute bus ride away (incredibly easy to flag down and only costing 150vt (around £1 per trip).

If you are thinking of staying somewhere with the relaxed and friendly atmosphere the south pacific islands are famed for- this is it! If relaxing by the pool gets too boring for you- they also offer free kayak and snorkel hire for you to explore the lagoon to your hearts content!

Room Tip: Wifi signal is strongest by the reception and restaurant end, and wood floors mean you can hear foot...

Met by Pascale who was organised by the resort to drive us to our resort. He was fantastic as our tour guide during our stay.Tropicana is the happiest and most relaxing place to holiday,Spoilt by Flora who is there with her smile and knowledge for all.Shiela in the dining room where the food was perfect, plus our complimentary breakfast, Jack and all staff could not have been more helpful during our 8 nights stay.
Being 5 minutes in the bus to town to shop or boat trips and the markets great.
The most restful area is kayaking around the lagoon or sitting at the meal table looking over the water watching children swim and fish.Pool and Apartment always clean and comfortable plus cooking facilities. Looking forward to our next holiday at Tropican Lagoon. Val

Room Tip: We were very happy with the end upstairs room being quiete with a cool breeze late in the day.

On arrival at Tropicana Lagoon Apartments we were greeted by Flora who was wonderful during our stay. We were offered complimentary fruit drinks and shown to our upstairs studio apartment by Albie. The room had wifi (as we were to confirm later the fastest in town, the competition was average and unreliable), cooking (double gas cooker) microwave, TV, balcony with chairs and table, all clean and a good size. Others have described that the rooms can be a little noisy at times with soundproofing not very good, (high ceilings and wooden floors) this is true but not too bad. The rooms were serviced daily. Breakfast was tropical fruit and toast with coffee or tea. You could order other breakfast option at your expense. The restaurant was overlooking a narrowing of the lagoon, a lovely setting. The restaurant was popular for all meals of the day and night; we had a very good lunch there. Tours and airline checks as well as information could be arranged from reception with Meri Lu who was very helpful. Swimming pool and deck chairs around were good in the sun. Kayaks were available at no cost to explore the lagoon as well as a local tour of the lagoon on a pontoon boat (included in our package). Town was only a short bumpy ride (roads in Port Vila are not in great condition at the moment) in a taxi or van. Vans you hailed, (plenty of them day and night) told the driver where you wanted to go and it was 150 vatu each to town sharing with other tourists and locals along the way. Same price back, you can identify the vans for hire as they have a red B at the start of their number plate, red T for taxi but they cost a lot more. 3 -4 minutes walk down the road towards town is a small shop with some food items for sale and a further 3-4 minutes walk is a modest supermarket and fuel station. The better supermarket (for selection and price) we found is the Au Bon Marche slightly out of town. Overall a quiet location to stay at and we would happily stay again. Thanks to Pascal of Ride On tours for a great round the island tour we stopped anywhere we wanted to and had the van to ourselves, for this we were charged 15000vt, we even went grocery shopping before returning to our accommodation.

We have stayed at Tropicana for 7nights on a Wotif Special. The room was very clean and serviced daily. Staff is friendly and welcoming. The mattress was a bit hard for me but my partner loved it. There are only 3 TV channels in Vanuatu but as we were on a holiday it didn't matter. The complimentary breakfast was pretty average Toast, Jam, Fruit and Tea/Coffee. But you can order a la carte as well and the pancakes were yummy. We certainly enjoyed our stay and would stay again!

Great location being on 5 minutes from town but in a nice quiet area. Perfect place for my son to run around safely! Staff are super friendly and the restaurant food was some of the best I had in Port Vila and very reasonably priced. Good choice of wines available too. Rooms are spacious and clean with reliable wifi compared to other places in town. Will definitely be staying here again!

Tropicana offers a nice place to stay and a fantastic place to eat.

The rooms are spacious, clean and new; my studio beach front upstairs apartment offered a comfy double bed, day lounge, radio/ipod player and good self catering facilities (toaster, kettle, fridge and microwave). A small desk and chair were in the corner, and double wooden doors opened out on a very pleasant balcony with an equally pleasant view across the water to palm trees.

The 'big plus' about Tropicana is the local staff who are lovely, helpful, kind and genuine and will go out of their way to assist you. The other 'plus' is the restaurant's chef, along with the restaurant outlook and ambience (look down and watch the starfish!).

Grab a complimentary kayak and enjoy a sunrise or sunset paddle!

Best to note that Tropicana isn't really a resort as such, it's more a place that offers short and long term apartment and villa hire. I felt it would be good base for a group e.g. 10 plus friends visiting Efate (the main island of Vanuatu) for the likes of a wedding, reunion, attending a conference etc, or as temporary accommodation for a family relocating to Vanuatu for business.

Located on charming lagoon number two Tropicana is located along and beyond the road that goes from the edge of town up to the University of the South Pacific - about a ten minute local bus ride from town (if the bus goes direct), and about 25mins from town if the minibus drops off a few others off along the way. Get around on a budget (and with a cultural experience) by using any of the mini buses with a red 'B' on the number plate costing 150 Vatu (about AUD $1.60) alternatively a taxi will cost you about 1000 Vatu (about AUD$12.50) one way and you may have to wait a while for it to turn up.

A couple of small things to keep in mind - there's not much to walk to from Tropicana so you will either be taking a lot of taxi's or a lot of local buses to and fro, or driving your own car, and while the Internet signal (wifi) is strongest in the restaurant, it's fairly weak in the far end rooms even if you plug into the cable (this matters if you're staying for business). Also the cable doesn't extend very far unfortunately. Also there's minimal sound proofing in floors and walls if neighbours apartments play thumping music in the upstairs room you can generally hear most things in the room next door (only downside of the lovely wooden floorboards).

If you don't stay at Tropicana be sure to visit to dinner under the stars and above the starfish! (Thursday, Friday and Saturday are the busiest).... and why not end the night by grabbing a divine dessert two doors down at the wonderful restaurant of Vila Chaumieres! again dine over the water and with the starfish but with even more ambience (and a little higher price tag to match, but totally worth it). Again best go on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night for the best vibe.

Room Tip: Try upstairs if a studio apartment, and close to reception if you need decent wifi access!
