“Loved it”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 June 2012

We just came back from a 7 night stay at Breakas in a garden fale (number 25 - next to the massage therapy fale, amazing massages). Based on the reviews on Tripadvisor I was prepared for a mixed bag with Breakas but from the moment we arrived and were greeted with big smiles and welcome cocktails we loved it. The room was leafy and cool, with beautiful wooden shutters and a high ceiling (with 3-speed fan) to keep the temperature nice. There are also mesh screens at the top to create air flow. The rooms are a little dark but that is easily fixed by turning on the main light and the two bedside table lamps. The lighting creates a nice ambience and is sufficient. We didn't spend much time in our room so the lighting didn't bother me. The bathroom was cool, with walls made out of stone/coral with open air at the top of the wall and a thatched roof - it was like showering in a waterfall. Fresh towels were delivered daily. The staff were lovely, they are pretty shy and can come across as disinterested but if you say hello and smile they instantly engage with you. One of the ladies saw that I had picked up a coconut and she immediately offered to open it for me, off she went with a huge grin, working away at the tough layers - the fresh coconut water and flesh was amazing. Every person who walked past our fare would smile and wave if we were sitting out on the porch and looking around. If you ignore them they won't intrude. George (the Aussie owner) was great, checked up on us after the first day to see if we were happy, and even gave us a ride into town one day.
When we arrived the room was filled with beautiful tropical flowers, and these were often replenished when our room was cleaned. It was a lovely touch. The pool is stunning (colder than the sea but very refreshing) and really clean. The rest of the amenities were great, there is a pool table on the beach and there are reef shoes, snorkels, masks and fins available for guests to use.
We didn't have breakfast at the restaurant (at around NZ$30 per person we had other spending priorities) but instead bought tropical fruit from the markets and muesli and yoghurt from the supermaket and ate that out on the porch everyday. That was perfect for us. We went to the Melanesian night and also had a superb dinner from the bar menu one night (the fish is super fresh). Check out the introductory scuba dive with Big Blue (they do a morning lesson in the pool), this was my first time scuba diving and I loved it, the guys are great and very careful, following the pool session we decided to go out on an afternoon dive and it was a highlight of the trip. The resort was quite quiet when we were there, but there were couples of all ages and everyone was friendly. We ended up having drinks with different people a few times which was nice. I really can't find fault with Breakas, if you are really high maintenance and things like no air-con (not that you need it) and an open air shower freak you out then it won't be for you. If you love those kinds of things then go for it. We had a blast!

Room Tip: Garden fare 25 was perfect, there is a path leading straight to the beach outside the front door.

Stayed for a week, first week June 2012. Seaside bungalow. Delightful accommodation. Far enough out of town to be quiet yet only a short bus ride to town. The beach in front of the resort is not one you can expect to do much swimming from - very harsh bottom. Sound of surf at night very relaxing.

Staff were great and the owner George was super helpful - we had a very early departure and forgot to get passports from the safe the night before and we ended up getting him down to the resort at 4:30am and then he kindly drove us to the airport so as not to delay the shuttle bus - talk about personal service! Thanks George.

Only possible criticisms would be that (a) the bed was very firm; (b) the restaurant menu was a little limited in selection - the dishes available were excellent though and at least on par with the better restaurants around town.

Room Tip: Definitely go for a beachfront bungalow, sea breeze a must

Stayed here for a business trip, resort was lovely but too small & intimate for the amount of guests staying at the hotel, i prefer Irikiki island more space & closer to town & more dining options.

We stayed at Breakas in December 2011. Spend there one week. It was a nice place, friendly happy staff. The resort is adult only. It's really quiet and peacefull in the evening. We enjoyed our stay at this resort, although I must say that there are few points which may be improved. The bar was closed at 9.30 - 10.00 PM, this applied also when events were organized by the Resort staff. Breakfast was poor, and the same every day. Lunch and dinner were OK. The tour office inside the resort was not very helpful, they could have done more.

In any case, there were a lot of things that one can do outside the resort. Make your own program and you will enjoy your stay at Breakas. If you enjoy diving, you will enjoy also the diving company which is advertised by the resort. Really nice team and of course, beautiful diving places!!!

Room Tip: If you want a quite place and close the bar, go for the garden view room!

We booked to stay at The Breakas Beach Resort in Vanuatu (adults only) in a 3 bed villa with our own pool. When we arrived we were told that we were in fact staying at Surfside on Breakas Beach, a family friendly resort next door. It was not a problem regarding the "family friendly" bit as we were the only people staying there. We were told that all of the Breakas Beach Resort facilities were available to us as there were none at the Surfside? The facilities were good but to get a drink in the bar after 2130 was difficult as it seemed the bar closed at 2200 and the staff were rather keen on making sure we were out earlier. The pool at our villa was poor (a pool enclosed by walls on all sides) but the view from the front of our villa was breathtaking. The beach at Brekas is disappointing as you have to cross a large amount of coral to get to the open water. Port Vila town itself is very dirty with rubbish strewn around the place ( it needs someone in authority to get it cleaned up and that could be done without a lot of cost) .There are a limited number of restuarants, not of a very high quality. Needless to say, we will not be returning to Port Vila in the near future.

My husband and I stayed here at the end of our honeymoon for 4nights, and we were very disappointed. We stayed on Espirito Santo (Moyyan House by the Sea...Most amazing place in the world!) and I'm afraid this resort didn't quite cut it. The staff were helpful, but not very friendly. The whole place had an air of arrogance about it...especially the tour desk guy named Arnold. We greatly missed the shy, friendly and generous people of Santo...as all of Port Vila has been westernised in a bad way. I'm not one to complain at all....but we had an issue with barking dogs here and didn't sleep much at all...when we told the staff, they moved us around twice....so all in all we stayed in three different rooms for 4nights stay. We were exhausted and wouldn't recommend this place for honeymooners who want privacy and seclusion. This resort was filled with mostly over 55's. Otherwise....the rooms were clean, the food was fine (westernised) and it was overall a fairly average over populated resort!

Room Tip: We stayed in three different rooms due to being kept awake all night by barking dogs. We stayed in...

My husband and I just returned at the end of May 2012 from a second stay at this resort. We both enjoyed the experience. This is a quiet peaceful place where it is possible to relax and unwind. The accomodation is comfortable and the location by the sea and set into tropical gardens is perfect. The staff are helpful and all work hard to make your stay enjoyable. We particularly liked the delicious meals served by the pool and the entertainment each night. Having themed nights featuring different Pacific cuisine and dance groups was fun and interesting. One of the highlights was the village tour where resort guests are able to see the village and meet the people. Pango village has a friendly atmosphere. We took pencils and books for the school which were appreciated. Any useful gifts are a way to help these delightful people and their families.
We would recommend a trip to The Summit Gardens where a beautiful vast garden is situated overlooking the coast. Rooms of themed tropical plants blend into each other over an easy walking trip. The cafe serves delicious cakes and coffee and sells local beauty products. Hideaway Island is also a good day trip for snorkelling. The great treasure of a trip to Vanuatu is meeing the people. They are friendly and polite and in our experience make visitors feel welcome.
