“Great Review”
Reviewed 4 January 2014

There's a tonne of reviews for Breakas which are great, they pretty much point out every possible thing that is good and maybe a couple of the little odd things about venues in Vanuatu.

So I will save the time and give you the best bits.

- No kids . . so you can go to the pool and the bar without dodging screaming toddlers and frustrated parents bombing and peeing in the pool.

- No pressure or hassling. Seriously. Often the number on thing that worries travellers. You wont get hassled at the airport, bars, streets, beach etc etc to buy things, go on tours or carry bags. You wont have people screaming "braid your hair" in your face in the street. You can leave the hotel if you want to and get onto a bus or taxi, go into the city and hang out all day without one person chasing you down to buy things.

Im serious . . you never get hassled to do anything.

- There are no wandering groups of teenage schoolies gangs. There are few teenagers at all and certainly not groups of beer swilling school kids and "douchebro's" . . Nearly all the people that come here get away from that. Think the opposite of Bali. There are no strip clubs, "adult" tours or "lucky lucky". You can hang out with the locals and have a beer, in a hut, or a Kava venue without dealing with idiots.

- It's safe. I dont mean "stay in the hotel and it's safe" I mean "It's safe to get into a bus with 3 huge local's and go to a Kava hut and talk about the world" . . It's safe to walk the dead dark streets and the people are ALL nice to you, will help you find things and get around. Culturally they are shy, peaceful and caring.

- Prices are very good and deceptive. OK - you've heard on TA that the prices are pretty much on par with Australia . but that's not entirely right for food . . the servings are twice the size and that includes seafood platters (seriously, there is a review where someone whining about the price of the platters, they are 2/3rd the prices of Sydney and twice the size AND with real seafood. Not 2 prawns and chips . . and they complained? Get a grip)

- The food is all fresh, when you get home you will realise you havent eaten any processed junk food all week. All meals have likely been caught in the local area, there is no crazy grading and colouring . . no refining etc . . it's all non processed and caught locally.

- Great staff - they get to know you personally and after a few days they know your favourite cocktail, food and always greet you with a smile.

Things you may find odd but are interesting. . .

- Occasionally you might find a crab in your room . . this is a good thing. I mean the little ones and hermit crabs. It's a real sand in your feet experience. You wont find spiders . . you find gecko's. The beach is on your doorstep.

- Lots of Gecko's. They chirp . . we called them "Jub Jub"

- You can make a lot of things with Coconut and they are everywhere. In the city you can buy 15 coconuts for about $2 . . they are everywhere. They are used for everything. Dont feel guilty drinking a whole coconut. Especially in a cocktail.

- Fruit is everywhere and cheap. See above, insert "Mango" and "Pawpaw"

- Water and food is safe. I mean, dont go drinking out of a drain, but in general everything is very good quality. You rarely hear of people getting sick.

- Cruise ships are common. Passengers are fun! the locals give them special attention. Especially the ones with huge lanyards around their necks that say "cruise ship". They get special prices. Veeeery special prices.

- Most bars everywhere dont know what a measured glass is and all of them over pour . . so those aussie prices? halve it.

- It's hot. Get used to it. There is no air conditioning. Carry water.

- Be nice to the staff and the managers. You will be surprised how far that will get you anywhere (that's kind of a tip for life in general really). If you are nice to staff they are nice back . . if you are a whiny complainer that finds fault with everything or yell out "oi get me a brewski" to the waiters . . you wont get anywhere. Don't complain that the sand is sandy, water is wet and the rooms have floors. It happens. If there is a massive storm, there may be some water on the floor. If your food takes 5 minutes longer to arrive, get a drink. It's not Sydney, you arent god and the food is better here anyway.

(in fact, dont say "brewski" . . just stop)

- Pack earplugs. Not because of Breakas, but because it takes a long time to get use to silence and the occasional lizard sound. People actually complained that there was one or two noises at night instead of the drone of cars and trains. If you cant handle silence and the odd dog bark, wear earplugs.

The staff are wonderful at the resort, we singled out Lu, Frida, Becka, Annie, and many others.

I could bang on for ages, these are a few of the good things to consider. All in I absolutely recommend breakas, stay there you wont regret it.

Room Tip: Beachfront rooms are awesome, dont get one too close the bar as the music is a little repetitive...

Stayed at Breakas Beach Resort for our honeymoon and have been raving about it since. The locals and the staff are so very friendly and extremely generous. One of the staff even took us for a tour though the local village and we were humbled by our surroundings. This helped to put things into perspective when service was a little slow but to be honest you should go there expecting Island time. The facilities were fine

Seriously, anyone who complains about this place is just petty. It's a great resort with excellent service, the beach on your doorstep and healthy island food.

Same prices for food and drinks as any outer sydney restaurant and a manager who goes out of the way to make you happy.

I've got three more days here and don't want to leave.

My wife and I stayed here in late November and had a very relaxing stay. The service was great, good food (although a bit pricey the breakfast is included and was very good). The beach and pool are both great, with free snorkel and fin hire from reception you can swim out to the reef. The rooms are nice and spacious, with excellent showers. The only downsides were the lack of airconditioning - but the fan is pretty good so kept us cool enough - and the loud lizards that make strange bird-like sounds in the middle of the night. They keep the mozzies away though (which is just as well because the mosquito net doesn't fit the bed).

The wifi is pretty good, although the signal was not strong in the room (ours was back from the water, presume those closer to the water had better signal). I'd recommend getting the TelstaBroadband deal, not the hotel one. The TelSat was $40 for 1GB, vs the other one which was based on time - you can also use it on multiple devices.

We had a very nice massage on site and the tour of the village was worthwhile. Overall is was a great place to stay. Would also recommend a trip to the Cascade Falls.

Room Tip: We were in room 38, which was back from the beach, but nice and private. Some of the rooms near the...

Dear Ra F, thanks for the wonderful review. We are very glad you had an excellent time and got to experience many of the sites including Cascades Waterfalls ( very popular). Our WIFI charge is $35 for unlimited use for 7 days which compared to most resorts is incredibly cheap ( $19.95 a day in a Sydney Hotel) We are very glad you enjoyed the food. Being on the beach and with our award winning pitched roof fares (bungalows) we find the cooling breezes are perfect to keep you cool year round. We so hope you come back next year and see us again.

A couple of weeks ago my family of four stayed at Surfside Villas (self-catering), about 100 metres down from Breakas. There is a happy arrangement between the two establishments which means that those staying at Surfside can have free access to the facilities of Breakas, including bar, restaurant, pool, non-motorised water equipment and so on.

Overall, we were delighted with Breakas. The meals we had there were really good (particularly the dinner on our last night - that Poulet Fish was to die for!), the staff were unfailingly friendly and polite, and the areas we used, such as the bar and the pool, were always clean and tidy. It was a real pleasure to be there. Sometimes our sons (16 and 18) went on their own and that was fine, too. We were never once made to feel that we were "just visiting from the Villas".

If there is a point or two to be made for improvement, it would be these. Firstly, on our last night we had dinner in the downstairs section of the restaurant and the food was fantastic, our waiter very attentive. There were 4 sets of couples who had tables for two set up on the sand just a little in front of us; the evening was lovely and it all looked very romantic. We were enjoying the music coming from the bar area which was just loud enough for everyone to enjoy without being intrusive. Then, we became aware that a DIFFERENT sound track was being played in the restaurant section where we were. Thinking it was a mistake, we asked our waiter to turn it off as it clashed terribly with the other music we were enjoying from the bar. He said that he couldn't as the manager was adamant that there was to be different music played in the restaurant. What? That just seemed plain silly! It was so discordant and very distracting. It didn't ruin our evening, but it was just downright weird and off-putting. It would stop every now and then, and then start up again. We would have been happy with either selection of music but just not both at once because it meant we couldn't enjoy either! Anyway, as I say, it's a small thing, but it should be brought to someone's attention and sorted out.

Secondly, before we had finished our meal, (which, I might add, was not at all late in the evening), the waiters were already bringing in the tables from the 'honeymoon diners" out on the beach who had by now left. So as we were trying to enjoy our dessert, tables and chairs and dirty tablecloths were being stacked around us. I know that things like this need to be done, but couldn't it have waited until AFTER we'd finished? It did just make us feel a little that we should hurry up and finish as they wanted to get on and close the restaurant up. We hadn't asked to sit in that section; that was where we were put, so perhaps they should have seated us somewhere else to begin with? Again, not a deal-breaker, and it didn't detract from the delicious food, but it could have been done better.

We spent a happy time on the volcano tour to Tanna and, on our trip, was Tony, the father-in-law of Glen, who is in some way connected with improving Breakas Resort. Although we have no experience of how Breakas was before, we were certainly impressed with whatever Glen is currently doing to improve the customer experience overall. Keep it up! We'd love to visit again!

In late November we had the privilege to stay at Breakas resort for 8 nights. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the resort and can say without a doubt it has been our most relaxing holiday to date and it was the perfect way to get away from phones, TV and internet and forget about work! We also chose Breakas for the “kid free” experience. We often sat on the lounges at the front of the bar overlooking the beach or in the “honeymoon” cabana – just to relax and get away from it all.
We stayed in a garden fare which we found very comfortable and suited our needs. The king size bed was a treat! The room was cleaned daily.
We found the staff to be helpful and cheery. Pam the General Manager is an extremely likeable and approachable person. A couple of issues we had were dealt with promptly and effectively. She would do her rounds at breakfast, lunch and dinner and even took the time to sit and have coffee with us at breakfast one morning. She made us feel welcome and special at all times. Nothing was ever too much trouble.
A special mention must go to our favourite staff – Salote, Eamon, Bradley and Becky. Wonderful service every day with a smile. Salote especially went out of her way on her day off to co-ordinate a special visit to Mele village for us. We will never forget our time at Mele. Thank you. :)
Breakfast was included in our package and the variety of fruit, pastries and toast was perfect. We ate at the resort restaurant every single night and the quality and variety was excellent. Best pork belly we have ever had. The seafood platter was enormous!! We found the pricing very reasonable and were quite pleasantly surprised when we got our final food and bar account which included all food, beers, spirits, coffee and cocktails! Each night had a theme and we enjoyed the culture of the Ni-Vanuatu dancing, music and fire show. The group from Santo in particular were fantastic.
Our package also included a scuba experience. We made use of this to get our scuba legs back after a break of 2 years. Special thank you to Jerry of Big Blue. Our 30 minute massage was a wonderful bonus as well.
The snorkelling on the reef out the front of Breakas was a little disappointing but we also went scuba diving in Mele Bay and can say that the reef was not much better even down at 20 metres. Overfishing has depleted the fish life and algae buildup and cyclones have damaged the reef but it was great to see conservation being undertaken in repairing the reef and replanting corals.
We would recommend Breakas to anyone seeking a relaxing holiday. The staff are great, the scenery is beautiful (best sunsets) and the food was lovely. We made new friends with like minded travellers which made for easy relaxing nights by the pool and bar. We will definitely be back. Thank you to Pam and staff for making our time at Breakas NAMBAWAN!!
