I spent 5 nights at the Hideaway Island Resort in Oct 2013, near Port Vila in Vanuatu. It was a last minute special offer and a chance to do a few scuba dives in what the internet described as a marine sanctuary. Nice staff and peaceful surrounds aside, the walk onto reef for snorkelers resembled a weapons test site rather than a marine sanctuary for anyone who knows a nice reef. Broken corals and no sizable fish at all. Plenty of small colourfull fish to thrill kids or new comers to a reef environment but if you have seen a nice reef with an array of creatures, you will be disappointed with this place.
The scuba dives were even more sparse. A large Trigger fish was the biggest animal we saw in two dives, barely larger than a watermelon. One diver on a subsequent day saw a turtle and it was big news amongst the dive team, an obvious indication as to the rarity of such a normally common reef dweller. My dive buddy and I promptly took a bus into Port Vila the next day and dived with Nautilis Dive, who were priced the same as Hideaway but far more sophisticated and professional. A wreck and dive and an other were prettier but failed to find anything even half the size of my dive buddy. So if diving is your thing, best to go the extra cost and effort and get out to Santo.
The food at Hideaway was great, the staff friendly and the accommodation only just fair. Without a single comfortable lounge or seat anywhere on the island and wifi that is totally inadequate, you would need to go to Hideaway, simply to hide away.
