“Good place to stay in Vila”
Reviewed 20 September 2013

If visiting Vanuatu on holiday it is better to stay out at one of the resorts, but if you have a late or morning flight or want a day or two in Port Vila for cheap shopping then this is a great place to stay. It is walking distance to almost everything, it has the pool, good breakfast, cultural / Kava night, nice rooms and nice staff. Good also if staying in Vila for work.

I booked in here when my first choice in Vila was full - but ended up very grateful for that. This is a very friendly place - the staff are a real asset and are fluent in French and English. The room was spacious and nicely laid out with a balcony overlooking the pool area and a stylish, modern bathroom. I was initially worried that the entertainment from the pool/bar area would disturb me but it finished early and I was able to sleep very comfortably with the door to the balcony open. The restaurant was very good - I had a delicious eye fillet steak with peppercorn sauce - and the breakfast buffet was a really pleasant surprise, with delicious croissants, fruit salad, waffles, eggs and fresh French bread. I had an early start the day that I left, and really appreciated the continental breakfast that was brought to my room in the evening, so I could still have breakfast even though I was leaving before the normal buffet began. Town is about 10 minutes walk away, down the hill. I thought the value for money was excellent, and it's a place I would happily stay at again in Vila.

I have just returned from a week stay here. I was in a new room and they were very nicely decorated and very big. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Breakfast was nice and had quite a few options. We ordered dinner here one night which was the same as BBQ night which was a mistake because it was very slow to come out, so didn't have dinner here again. Good location and handy to town, but quiet off the main street. It's not on the water though and I don't think any of the rooms have sea views, which would be my only negative. The pool area is very nice. I would recommend this hotel and would stay here again.

We had a 5 night stay which started at a1am arrival. There was a staff member there to welcome us. The rooms were very clean and comfortable. The daily breakfast great. If you choose to eat at the Oasis bar and grill you won't be disappointed. It's as good as anywhere in town. We enjoyed the Melanesian Feast Night and thought it great value. However by far the best thing were the staff.(underpaid). Always friendly, willing to advise on local cultures and eager to listen.

Room Tip: rooms on the northern side don't have a sun problem in the afternoon

This is my second stay here. The first time a few years ago, they were still renovating and stayed in an 'old' room. This time, I get to use a renovated room on the same level as the pool. The new room makes use of wood and especially liked the bathroom counter made of wood. I find the pool level room convenient as you can easily get out and use the cafe tables where the free internet signal is quite strong. Staff quite great. Breakfast is the same day in day out so having stayed there for a week, it became monotonous. Location is great - you can walk to some good restaurants. Request airport transfers from the hotel as it is more convenient.

The Melanesian has very nice staff who are attentive to the guests. The hotel offers a variety of entertainment including traditional dances and kava ceremony. The location is not far from town and the rooms are clean and comfortable.

This is not a review for the accommodation, but the Wednesday Night 'Melanesian Feast.'
This was by far the worst 'activity' we had while staying in Vanuatu. We were staying at another hotel but paid our 5000VT for a 'cultural night.'
The night includes a buffet style traditional meal, with cultural dances, kava ceremony, then string band.
The meal was average after having tried other 'authentic' Vanuatan meals on other tours. We didn't realise drinks weren't included and didn't bring any other money with us, so we just ordered waters. 15 minutes later, our water arrived.
When the cultural display came out with the dances etc, the Taylor Swift soundtrack was still playing over our heads so ruined the whole atmosphere and we couldn't hear anything. When the staff finally turned it off, we could still barely hear a thing from the main dancer. They seemed to be performing more to one side of the courtyard so we couldn't hear what he was talking about.
Then when the string band came, they came with a few token authentic instruments, but also a couple of guitars, bongo drum and plastic tambourine. Hmmmmm. Musically they were ok, but the whole thing felt very contrived, fake and put on for the tourists. We left after 3 songs.
Lowlight of the trip.

Thank you for your positive comment on the Wednesday cultural event on the BBQ nights. Your comments will be forwarded to the person concern. We sincerely regret the poor performance of the cultural group, however the management has been inform to improve the performance and the menus. We hope to offer a better cultural night with the many changes that are currently done for each BBQ nights of the week. Thank you very much for your comments.
