“Quiet place to Relax”
Reviewed 11 November 2013

We wanted a quiet place to relax after a ghectic year. Poppy's suited the bill perfectly. We stayed in a spa bungalow on the water. Absoutely ideal. Only problem was the bathroom light tripping the circuit breaker, but it was fixed as soon as we brought it to the attention of the managers. The staff were very helpful. We had read about the steep driveway and so were prepared. Since walking up and down it a couple of times a day, the hill climb at the gym has been easy. For people who may be concerned about the climb, taxis and buses will come to you.

Writing this a little bit later than I should. Our stay was in April 2013 for 10 nights and really enjoyed it. What you need to know about this resort is that it is a small boutique resort and not a 5 Star big dollar resort. From the moment we arrived we felt very welcomed and it had a warm happy feel about the place. We had the breakfast deal everyday which was organised prior to arriving and we all loved the food and convenience every morning. We had a 2 bedroom apartment which was on the first floor, I would suggest this as there was a nice view and the breeze was great. The rooms were clean and basic, as would I say about the whole resort. It's a nice walk in to town but be prepared for the steep hill (driveway) after that it's good. We broke our trip up with a visit to Friendly Bungalows in Tanna (separate review), but we still had one night left at Poppy's when we returned. We were able to keep our same room and leave all but the essentials that we took with us to Tanna, we were really thankful for this. If you are after a nice quiet, clean, friendly and happy place to stay in Villa, I would definitely suggest you give Poppy's a go. Thanks, the Kay Family.

Stayed for 7 nights in October. Very nice, quiet, small resort. 3 pools, and kayaks, canoes etc but don't stay at Poppys if you are looking for a resort with lots of activities and action. Suited us perfectly as we wanted a nice quiet relaxing holiday. Good comfortable 15 minute walk into town (up the driveway and uphill to start with ) Staff are very friendly and helpful..but they work on Island time - so do as I did - go to Vanuatu with low expectations - just go with the flow and you will have a fantastic time. Stayed in a studio lagoon room and was spacious and the kitchenette was adequate. We had no hot water one day and the situation was handled efficiently. We were offered another room but as we had only 2 days left we opted for the easy solution..and were given the key for the room close by for when we needed to shower...( and a couple of complimentary cocktails ) The stairs to the apartment were a challenge....or use them as we did as part of your daily exercise, and the advantage of being at the top of the resort was that you were close to the road to catch the bus into town. The 3 pools were lovely...especially the infinity pool...the view was amazing. The kayaks were lots of fun and we used them everyday. It was very relaxing just chilling around the waterfront, but they could possibly do with a few more comfy lounge chairs around the pool. Read some of the other reviews about the noise from the neighboring village - the lagoon view apartments are away from that a bit and the wooden shutters do block out lots of the outside noise anyway. We walked through the village a few times and were greeted with friendly smiles and lots of "Hello's" The ni-Vanuatu are truly beautiful people and would love to return one day again very soon.

This boutique resort was very special. Facilities were spotless everywhere you looked. All the staff were so friendly and attentive. The gardens here are beautiful and are always being tended to. Highly recommend this for folks who are after a quiet holiday close to town without all the razzmatazz of larger resorts. Some reviews of this resort have commented on the steep 'climb' to the top rooms, but they neglect to say that they are also stepping up/down through glorious gardens. We've been recommending this to anyone who will listen.

Room Tip: Chose a lower level room if steps are too great a challenge.

We stayed in a two roomed apartment with family, only a few steps from one of the two swimming pools. Dealing with the oppressive heat (42deg) and 100% humidity was a little tough for someone from the deep south of NZ and there was no air-con in our unit, only a ceiling fan to circulate the heat, so my wife requested a free standing fan to help minimize the discomfort. The temp dropped down to the mid 20's at night and sleep for us was only sparodic.
The staff at that time were all local people and simply wonderful, friendly and helpful, but at times we had concerns at how they were spoken to by the owner. We were amongst a group of 40 Kiwis, there for a wedding. The resort truly excelled with the wedding preparations and it went off without a hitch.Security roams the resort at night, to repel the stray dogs that wander through and also remove any Tree-Boas that may stray into the area. I saw the biggest spider imaginable and reacted accordingly with a vertical leap to safety.
Pleased I went and was able to form my own opinion, but would be in no hurry to return, unless we booked into a resort with guaranteed air-con.

Room Tip: Order one with air-con.

Just returned from 10 days at Poppys. On arrival they had us in two seperate apartments (my 9 & 14 yo daughters in a room and my wife and i in another ) Told them that we had booked a two bedroom aparment not 2 x 2 bed rooms (not sure whether travel agent or hotel had mucked this up) But the staff were wonderful and bent over backwards to get us moved to what we had booked. We had a room up the top which i have seen a few review say would not be the best ,but it suited us perfectly we had pool and only had to walk down the stairs for morning breakfast and the couple of times we ate tea at the resort ,(i can understand how for elderly this might be a little difficult) the upside was that we only had about 50 mtrs to walk up the steep driveway to catch the bus or walk into town.. We returned late one day from a tour to find our hot water had gone cold (gas had run out) they immediatly got us a key to a vacant room so we could have a warm shower after swimming in salt water all day was greatly appreciated. All the staff were extremly friendly and very welcoming they are always happy and smiling , a couple of the ground staff took time to have chats with both our children which they found fantastic. The atmosphere and facilities (kayaks pools etc) were fantastic and we are already starting to plan our return this time next year. The only downside which isnt the resorts fault is a couple of nights the dogs at neighbouring properties were barking for long periods.

Room Tip: If elderly or not very fit probably choose a room at the bottom of the stairs

We stayed at Poppys for 1 week in the school holidays, family of 5, in a 3 bedroom apartment right beside the water, it was lovely and spacious, with 2 bathrooms, full kitchen, lounge and large deck. Very good maid service, she even washed our dishes each day, always felt lovely and clean. Was a very relaxing spot right on the waters edge, with the pools and restaurant only a few steps away. All staff were very friendly.
It is only a 15 minute walk to town, but beware there is a very steep and not at all maintained driveway to climb up first, once at the top its an easy flat walk into town, until you go down the 55 steps at the end, so coming home again you have to climb up the steps out of town, unless you take a bus which are very reasonable at 150vatu each, and they are everywhere.
We enjoyed taking the kayaks out on the lagoon in the mornings it was very peacefull to float along with very little effort put into the paddling.
Poppys is a small resort, and the pools are small, but my children still swam for hours each day. We did feel that they needed more lounge chairs around the pool and along the beach front. We were always lucky enough to get one but we know others did not. Also needed is a couple of umbrellas around the pool as the family one is always in the full sun.
Meals in the restaurant were nice and reasonably priced, we found restaurants in Port Vila to be very expensive. therefore we ate at Poppys 3 nights and were happy with what we had.
There is a lot of noise at night from dogs in the neighbouring villages, this wasnt a problem for us, but could be for others.
Overall we enjoyed our stay and would recommend to others, families and couples. It is not a large resort with kids clubs and activities, or big resort pools. But what is there is more than enough for an enjoyable holiday.

Room Tip: ask for beachfront rooms, or rooms on the beach side of resort, not the rooms up the hill
