Stayed in an air conditioned but not upgraded twin room on the ground floor. Room was spacious, comfortable, clean and serviced daily. Having a basic kitchen, with a fantastic supermaket within a few minutes walk, was a good point. Found the walk to town easy in the cool of the evening or morning.

The Hotel was being renovated while we were there. The pool and outdoor bar area were out of action, but looked like they will be great when finished. Asked for a look at the newly refurbished rooms and they were well appointed with flat screen TV, larger bathroom and new kitchen. All the furnishings seemed to be new as well.

Found the Kaiviti a great place to base ourselves for a weeks diving.

Thank you for your review. We appreciate your positive comments. The pool and bar were completed in July 2011 and we are pleased with the results. We hope to welcome you back if you visit Vanuatu again in the future.

We knew that AC wouldn't be available in the upstairs rooms when we booked it, but we were not prepared for just how oppressively hot and miserable the family rooms here would be. That was our fault and is NOT the basis for the poor rating for this review.

They have the option of AC in the lower floor rooms and if you're in Vanuatu in the hot seasons you'll want to consider those, even if you end up needing 2 rooms, if you're traveling with a large family rather than getting the larger family apartment.

My low review is because, in large part, of the unclean room and area. A lizard fell from the ceiling when we entered the room--this could have been a quaint tropical island feature if it were the only thing, however the ants on the kitchen counter and other areas in the room were not at all 'Quaint". Nor was the mold in the shower tiles.

The room was not in good upkeep and, despite the comments in The Lonely Planet guide, our room had not been updated any time in the past decade other than the nice LCD flat screen TV. The beds sagged, the couches and chairs sagged and showed extensive wear. The screens in the windows did not fit well and caused some anxiety about mosquitos entering the room with our children even though Port Vila is not considered a high risk area for malaria.

There was extensive construction/repair of the pool/bar area that was not attractive and no effort was made to hide the mess or to make the area more attractive--there are probably safety issues there as well with the pool pit being wide open/unprotected and unfenced.

The hotel is pretty far from the town center and up a hill. While 150vt isn't a bad price for a one way ride in one of the town mini-buses. $US8 for a family of 5 round trip to town can add up after a couple times a day. And this hot time of the year that can make for a very hot hike up the hill.

By Vanuatu standards this hotel might not be amongst the worst, but I would not want to stay there with my family if I didn't have to. And not in the un-air conditioned rooms and not until they have their pool fixed up.

The Kaiviti Motel is very well located, within walking distance to town, shops and the supermarket. It has been going through a huge refurbishment, with some fantastic new executive rooms and great 2 bedroom units all with kitchens. Idea for the budget conscious and for quiet nights back in the room. The pool area is almost complete and will be one of the best around town with a new restaurant area and bar.

We stayed here for four nights and it is a basic motel with furniture that you'd find dropped off at the dump, or from the 1950's. It is being renovated at the moment so the pool and area surrounding is all empty. Hopefully they renovate the furniture also, we did have a good holiday here though, we were able to use the Melanesian Resort pool next door which was good and its about a 10min walk into Port Vila. Also the supermarket was about a 5 min walk.

I'm sitting here in my room in the Kiaviti on the last night of my holiday, reflecting on what a great time we've had in Port Vila and writing this review. The Kaiviti is currently under renovation (we are in a room that has been renovated) and when it is finished it will be great. The room I am in is clean, freshly pained, looks like all new furniture and beddings and even has a flat screen TV. The pool area is currently under construction and when complete (I heard March 2011) it will be wonderful - new pool, bar area, etc are all part of it. Once the pool is done, the plan is to work thru each remaining room in turn renovating them. We did have a look at a number of rooms while we where here and they all look clean and welcoming, regardless of whether they had been renovated or not. Previous peoples comments about cleanliness, etc of the rooms dont look to be valid to me.

We had internet access to the room included in the rate - wired, not wifi though. Speeds were acceptable (0.5mb/s) and seem the norm anywhere on the island.

Location worked well for us, just outside of town so no traffic noise, etc. Supermarket and a couple of great restaurants and within easy walking distance (even at night). A walk to the centre of town took about 10 minutes.

Only challenge we had was getting towels - had to ask staff for them on a couple of occasions. After asking, they soon arrived, so not a big deal.

When next in Vila, we'd have no problems staying here again.

This motel is below international standard, when it comes to amenities and cleanliness. At a rate of roughly $100+, you would expect more, although the rooms are spacious and the kitchenette is appreciated. Internet access is only available in the reception area for a substantial fee. No tv sets in the room, just very basic furniture. The walls would urgently need a repaint, and the bathroom is subpar. For example, the toilet brush holder, I bet, haven’t been cleaned for years. Just appalling! All would require a thorough clean up and redecorating. The pool needs a repaint, too and is by no means attractive. The staff is friendly, and the owner believes, he has a great place. To err is human!

We had stayed here 5 years before and loved it. This time, the shock came with the manager's lethargy and total lack of interest. We had booked a corner upper storey unit with a view. Bad mistake. The traffic noise was horrendous (not the motel's fault of course) but the noise from the wobbling ceiling fan made sleep without ear-plugs impossible - plus we were worried that the whole contraption would fall on the bed during the night. Add to that the tatty and threadbare curtains and the general air of neglect and decay that pervaded the whole place, and you can beleive that it was a fortnight from hell. Sure, we couild have moved out, and in retrospect we should have done so. But it was a matter of cost. I had chosen this place on past experience, so 'caveat emptor' applied.

I'm pleased that Kaiviti is in different ownership, and I hope the new owners are able to bring it up to an acceptable standard. It will be a hard slog indeed but worthwhile, because its position is ideal - although traffic noise is a hard one to combat. Double glazing and full air-conditioning will be a must. Would I recommend Kaiviti? Well, not untill reviews say so, and would I go there again? Not while there are so many other delightful resorts in Vanuatu.
