Coconut Palms Resort
Ranked #31 of 47 Hotels in Port Vila
Reviewed 15 July 2014

Stayed at Coconut Palms 6 times now & about to stay again in a few weeks for my 7th stay. Its a small resort where my expectations meet cost. As you can see from the price, its good value when your expectations meet the lifestyle of the Vanuatu. You can pay $250+ a night in Vila for a room & honestly still hit the exact same issues some people speak of. Be flexable. If your favourite beer isnt available then let it go & drink local tuska beer, if fish isnt on the menu one night then try something else. I have stayed there over 60 nights in total & always had hot water in my room. The staff are quiet, honest & very friendly so offer that back to them. My expectations for what i pay is an air conditioned room, clean sheets daily & a nice clean pool & friendly staff. Coconut has these and if you read the room description of which you are booking, you cant go wrong for the money. Ive tried several other places from a good deal dearer to half the price but i keep going back to Coconut.

The position is also what i love with Coconut. I like being away from the main traffic area with a shop next door for a soft drink or snack and also in the middle of normal Port Vila everyday life so its easy to go for a 2 min walk to a real nakamal to drink some kava. A bus would pass the front of the place every min or 2 to get you around or its a 5-10 min walk down to the town centre. I would love to see faster internet however dead slow internet is endemic everywhere across the island & i believe an optical fibre is not far away from Port Vila, i hope the resort jumps onto a faster service if it become available.

Room Tip: Read the room description.

If you are on a budget, this is a very good value place to go. It's basic and clean, come with breakfast and pool. Staff are friendly and fairly good location. Can't complaint with the cheap price that I was paying!

We stayed in the superior orchard room with a queen-sized bed, air con, bathroom (cold water only), tiny fridge and TV. It was reasonably clean but I wouldn't like to be stuck in the resort on a rainy day. The outside swimming pool is quite large compared to other resorts in Vanuatu. However, they need to keep it cleaner, there were dead insects and cockroaches floating in the pool.
The breakfast was really disappointing (even for Vanuatu standard). Every single morning the rice was overcooked and on one day they even ran out of food.
The upsides of this resort is their free cultural walk (they only offer it on Fridays though). We got to see the parliament and other places nearby and the local guide told us a lot about Vanuatus history and people.
The location is perfect if you are in for all day tours as it is situated close to city centre (it's upon a hill and families with strollers will have a hard time getting up to the resort).
All in all, I would not return to Coconut Palms but will for sure go back to Hideaway Resort where the staff is so much more helpful and friendly, the food tastes better and the location is just what you want for your island getaway.

The pristine pool set among gently swaying palms and a symphony of birds was like an oasis. Internet access was free - a Godsend after having to pay $10 per hour at our previous resort on the lagoon. Meals were of high quality so we were very pleasantly surprised that they were only about half the price of our previous hotel. We also liked the location as it is elevated (far less mosquitoes), quiet but with quick access to the CBD and airport and, the staff seemed to know all the taxi drivers and tour operators, making our transfers etc seemless. Staff were very obliging and held our luggage for us for 3 days at no charge while we visited Tanna Island (domestic baggage weight restrictions are tighter than on international flights). We had noted earlier comments and have since been advised that Coconut Palms has recently had a change of management. They were very helpful to us and seemed determined to provide excellent service.

Set amongst swaying coconut palms and tropical gardens, Coconut Palms Resort seemed like a comfortable paradise sent from the heavens above. The staff are always happy and friendly. Loved the eclectic mix of tropical and colonial style with contemporary features.

Not an option, unless your idea of a holiday is to engage 24/7 with staff to get the most basic of amenities.

The Superior Orchid rooms ($189 full rate NZD a night) are more accurately described as inferior. Very few of the features advertised on the website are actually available. Core basics such as air conditioning and a shower with hot water were not available in the three rooms I tried. None of those rooms had a balcony with outdoor furniture, microwave, wifi access, in house movies or fruit basket etc They are a small double with an old mini fridge an optionally (ie they may or may not be supplied) a lamp and jug. These rooms can fit two singles or a double with minimal leg room around the bed (not as advertised a double and single).
The shift to the 'Palms Deluxe Apartment' ($217 full rate NZD a night) was an upgrade only in that it had hot water. As with the other rooms very run down, ants, cockroaches, dripping showers, dodgy electrics minimal lighting and unreliable house keeping.
BTW: The images on the website are photo/show rooms and do not reflect the actual rooms you get.

Restaurant service is a similar trial in patience and continually making the best of what is on offer. The buffet breakfast is randomly supplied both in terms of food and cutlery and will require numerous requests to put together plates, cups and utensils should there be food and beverages available. Likewise dinner dining is disappointing. Whilst the menu suggests food and wine matches this is moot given the availability of most dishes and a wine list that amounts to a house red and white (low quality australian at that). As a vegetarian your options are limited to tomato soup, gnoochi or pizza. On the two vege pizza options should you think that the Roast Vegetable pizza will have veges on it and be distinguishable from the Neapolitan you will be disappointed. With a great vege market in Port Villa there is no excuse here.

The staff are really nice, however without the investment and staff training guests are stuck with
a run-down backpackers minus air-con, hot showers and available kitchen facilities.

Room Tip: Very poor value for money.

The friendly staff, who did their best for us, did not make up for the substandard management, facilities & service. We moved rooms three times to get our minimum requirements of working air con and hot water, ending up upgrading ourselves from 'Superior Orchid' to the 'Deluxe' apartment in order to get it without moving to another resort. It was quite nice, although the air con made a racket and the shower leaked.... No seafood all week despite the blackboard menus, kitchen closed when it felt like it, breakfast was a Fawlty Towers experience every day. So bad you had to laugh. The first day I waited 45 minutes until the waiter told me the egg truck didn't arrive; the last day the kitchen staff turned up an hour late and people had started digging around in the kitchen. We took our own coffee, bowls and spoons each morning. Other people got glasses out of the bar. Otherwise you would have to ask, can i have a plate, can i have a fork and knife, can we have some milk, will there be eggs? The staff were just not trained, eg the bain marie had some hot water tipped into it but wasn't lit - so the food went cold. It was in a good spot for making day trips and had some nice spaces and gardens, but everyone had a 'story' of the terrible rooms, cold water, horrible facilities, damp towels, etc etc. I suggest you pick somewhere else - or be prepared to camp pretty basic!

Room Tip: The Superior orchid rooms are small and run down. Avoid the ones that open next to the Kava bar unle...
