“Good for Me”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 February 2012

Stayed at this hotel last year room on third floor good views. Some other writers complained about the smoke smell around the hotel but I didnt notice any problems ( I'm a non smoker).
The staff I thought were wonderfull all trying hard. The breakfast was a little plain every morning, dinner meals very good. We found everything working in our room except the TV had very few channels to choose from. But then we sat on the balcony most nights and watched the sun set with a drink in hand of course. My only complaint was when we decided to stay another night and the front desk wouldn't give us the same rate that we had paid, I went up to my room and booked another night with Wotif and came back down with the booking number and at a reduced price all in five minutes.

Room Tip: Try for a high floor

Have spent the last 4 days in Port Vila, after my company decided that the Le Lagon was far too expensive this time around having been here 3 months ago. The hotel is centrally located and within walking distance to everything.

I found the staff to be very pleasant and helpful, my room was clean and in good repair, the bed was great, very comfortable. I had breakfast most mornings and there was certainly enough to offer any fussy eater.

I must admit waking to a view of the harbor each day was very good, and walking out the front without having to find a cab was great.

if you are looking for a flash hotel like you would in other capital cities, then I suggest you go another country. People have made suggestions that this & other hotels in the area are worn out & tired, this is probably true, but also take into account that the everything in Port Vila looks worn out and tired.

The only downside was the casino, the person who was obviously a manager of some sort, was rude and abrupt when I mentioned how enjoyable my time in the hotel was, and was told that casino was really part of the hotel.

The Grand Hotel & Casino was value for money, and I had a great stay.

Room Tip: ask for a room that has been refurbished

Perfect hotel to stay in and I would stay again in this hotel.

We stayed here at the start and at the end of our holiday. Both times we stayed in the Panorama Suites which are at the end of the buildings with magnificent views, and the rooms are very large and spacious. The beds are amazingly soft and I truly wanted to take home the pillows.

Free wifi internet passwords can be obtained from the reception. The same business that runs the Grand Hotel also runs the Iririki Island resort and guests are able to use the services over there for free. We would daily take the ferry over to Iririki (because we were Grand Hotel guests it was free) and used the kayaks and the catamaran at the little beach. Some little coral reefs are also at the little beach so take your snorkel gear.

Breakfast was amazing and the staff are very friendly and smile alot. They have a lunch special here were lunch is $10AUD or 1000vt and you get 400vt credit for the pokies in the casino. Lunch works out to be around $6AUD each.

2 minor things that were a let down were some mornings there was no hot water for the shower, which was odd as all other times there was hot water.
another instance was we had a bit of difficulty checking out the first time of our holiday.
Our booking.com voucher said we needed to pay $347, but the guy behind the counter said it was $375. We showed him the voucher and he agreed that we had the right price. We were told we could pay in $AUD so we gave him $350, which majorly confused him as he didn't have any coins to pay us the change in $AUD, which we expected. We suggested he just give us the change in Vatu (as has happened in countries like Vietnam, pay something in USD, and they give VND in change). He really wasn't sure about this but did give us the change in the end. While it all worked out in the end this did take 20 minutes which really should of taken maybe 5. Not enough to make me not stay here again.

If you can try to book the panorama suites, they are amazing. We heard other people checking into the Guest Rooms and they said it was a "a little narrow and small".

Room Tip: Panorama Suites have an amazing view and are very large.

Stayed for a week on business. Great location in town if you are in Vanuatu for business, go elsewhere if you are on holiday.
The rooms are tired and while the view is amazing...... The poor state of the fixtures and fittings and services (we had 2 mornings without hot water) negate to an extent the vista.
The food is priced at the same level as a 4.5 star hotel in Australia but nowhere near the quality or choice. The breakfast would be similar to what would be on offer at a country motel in Australia. To be fair there was some fresh tropical fruit with the remainder the tinned variety, the fruit juices especially we're all commercially produced. For an Island as lush as this and a hotel virtually adjacent to the Island produce market, a disappointing spread which would not be out of place in a motel in Mt Isa. The view from the restaurant once again saves the day.
We had dinner and lunch at the hotel and all were very average and overpriced.
Local staff were a delight and tried hard, but service worked sometimes and not others. Lots of people wondering about aimlessly. This is a developing country and we could make that exscuse However, I had the distinct impression that this was more about hotel management than local staff.

Perfect place to stay in Port Vila if you are here for business. In the middle of the town with nice view on the lagoon. At walking distance to the market, banks and other shops. I would not choose this place however for a holiday stay, there are more romantic places in Vanuatu.... Rooms are clean and spacious, breakfast is fine. The hotel shuttle to the airport is cheaper than local taxi's.

This is our 4th visit to the Grand since March of 2010. We have stayed at 7 other resorts in Port Vila and The Grand is now our preference. The location is ideal for us as it is right in “town” with access to shops and many restaurants. The rooms are very good, with a “3 way bathroom” which is very convenient. All rooms have a wonderful view of the harbour and Iririki. The pool is absolutely magic. Breakfast is substantial and at our last visit eggs were included along with the continental breakfast. The Grand is undergoing some minor renovations (carpets, painting etc.) which did not affect our stay.
The weather can be a bit erratic in Port Vila (when it rains, it rains!). We find the Grand fabulous on days like this as you can spend the whole day out of the rain, in the wonderful air conditioning, sitting in the lobby watching the world go by or even in the Casino for a little while. Please see our review of Crystals restaurant for lunch & dinner.
We highly recommend this hotel for couples or business. Perhaps if you have children a resort with kid’s club would be more suitable. We definitely would return to the Grand and look forward to booking our next stay. Please refer to our previous reviews for more information and am happy to answer any questions.

booked this hotel thru holidays.com. good price. but that's where it ended. !!!!! on arrival at the hotel, there were plenty aof staff at the reception. 11pm. got up to the room only to have trouble opening the door. the keys need a strong hand to open the lock. No good for people with arthritus. the room was tidy but far from spotless. SMEARS ON THE GLASS WALL BETWEEN THE BEDROOM AND THE BATHROOM. IN FACT SOMEONE ELSE HAND MARKS ON THE GLASS!!!!! The room safe had no operating instructions and we couldn't get it top work at all over our stay. WE STAYED 3 NIGHTS. The shower door was miss adjusted and wouldn't stay closed. So every time you showered the water went all over the bathroom floor, and into the entrance way to the room . ( A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE). THE DESK HAD NO PAPER OR PENS???. tea and coffee making supplies were sparse and there was only decaffinated instant coffee supplied. AMENITIES IE SHAMPOO ETC WAS ONLY SUPPLIED ON ARRIVAL AND NEVER GOT REPLENISHED DURING OUR STAY. IN FACT ON ONE OF THE DAYS SERVICE WE DIDN'T GET TOWELS REPLACED?? the food and beverage offering was very poor for a tropical island. the dinner menu didn't have any local seafood items. IE no coconut crab or lobster or fish. about the only seafood was a prawn ceasar salad (BORING) or a prawn and scallop brochette. the service in the bar on the sixth floor was very slow. only one bar person making all the drinks, and because of cocktail making, this was very slow and annoying. IN FACT AFTER SPENDING QUITE SOME MONEY AND TIME IN THIS BAR THE STAFF STARTED FLASHING THE LIGHTS ON AND OFF TO TRY AND GET US TO LEAVE AT 1AM ON A SATURDAY NIGHT.???
the buffet breakfast was very poor. don't bother asking for scrambled eggs THEY ONLY GIVE FRIED OR AN OMLETT. and the rest of the fare was pretty ordinary. the room had small cockroaches running around the floor. WE ORDERED A TAXI TO TAKE US TO THE AIRPORT FOR A 5AM PICKUP. and the guy on the front desk ordered this. On the morning of our departure a car arrived that wasn't a taxi it was one of his mates in a small daewoo lanos with a boot full of boom box so the luggage had to go on the back seat with one of us then to add insult to injury we got to the airport he wanted 1500VATU. Highway robbery.
On the positive side a great location.
