Prior to booking this hotel, we read the reviews. After reading some of the reviews that were negative (most, however, were positive!), we were a little unsure. BUT, after booking & staying at this hotel, we would, & most probably will, stay again!! To those that wrote negative reviews:do you just go away so that you can experience exactly what you can get at home? Have you never been to a developing country before?
We went to Vanuatu to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary.....it is one we will never forget. The people, from all the staff in the hotel, to the bus & taxi drivers, to the people in the street were so very friendly, charming & lovely. Our room at the hotel had a glorious view, was comfortable, QUIET & had all the facilities we needed. Anything we wanted/needed doing was done in a very friendly & courteous manner.
The breakfasts (included in the tariff) were magnificent......the fresh fruit was yum!! All prices: room, drinks, bar-food were reasonable.
Being able to laze/loll around outside either in the beautiful pool, or in the (sun) chairs, was very therapeutic & SO relaxing.
To sum up: for a country poor in resources & infrastructure, they do a superb job of welcoming & looking after/taking care of visitors. We would go back in a flash & be very happy indeed staying at the Grand................& we will!!!

Room Tip: Higher rooms are better because of the better view.

My partner and I stayed at the Grand for four nights just before New Years Eve. We really enjoyed our stay. The meals are great and reasonably priced, the rooms are clean and comfortable, and the pool area is a great place to relax. We also enjoyed having a dabble at the casino!

We found the location great - it is in the middle of town so it is an easy walk to supermarkets, shops, markets, etc. We could have easily stayed there for more than four nights - it's a great place to use as a base to explore other parts of Vanuatu (it's a short bus ride to Hideaway Island, Mele Cascades, etc).

Everything is clean and tidy and my partner especially enjoyed the buffet breakfast that was included in the price of our room! Even though it is in the middle of town, we did not find it noisy, and our first floor room had a lovely view of the ocean. We'd stay here again and recommend it to anyone who wants to stay somewhere that is value for money. The staff are awesome.

Vanuatu is a lovley spot where i have travelled a number of times and a great holiday. I would not recommened this hotel, nothing could be organised and if it was well what an effort. Meals in the restaruant, you could tell the place needed a could clean especially seening food crumbs on the window edge.

When i arrived one hot night at midnight, i found the fridge to be warm, no bottle water and some cockroached. Next day house cleaning came to spray and actual fact i showed the cleaer how to spray. And what an inconvience it was to ask for help when i could not open my door and complained about the door did not lock.

The hotel decided on a nice warm summer day to repair the pool , Is this the only time do this and couldnt it wait???

We've been to Vanuatu many times but have always stayed at the resorts - as we were doing a scuba diving course located in town decided to try this hotel which was only a 5 minute walk to the course - best decision we could have made and will certainly be staying here again. We were in a Harbour View room for 7 nights which was very comfortable. The view from the balcony was fantastic particularly on New Years' Eve with the fireworks in the bay - brilliant. The staff were all excellent and very helpful if we needed anything. This was a great place to stay.

Room Tip: We will probably upgrade to the Panorama Rooms next time only because we like 'that little bit extra room'.

We stayed in a Harbour view room for 9 nights late December 2012. Originally we were checked into 408 but requested to be moved as balcony door did not lock. The reception staff were very accommodating and they moved us to 304. The room was cosy, had a comfortalbe king size bed, good size lcd tv, large robe with built in safe, however the ensuite was a bit on the small side as it contained shower, vanity, bath and toilet. Housekeeping were very friendly and proficient.

Breakfast was adequate with a combination of hot and cold options but you have to pay extra if you want bacon. On a number of days the hot boxes (baked beans, pancakes, hash browns, sausages) were either empty or very low and we had to ask for them to be replenished on a number of occasions. A big thank you to Mary for her excellent service.

Lunch: we ate maily at the pool bar and enjoyed all meals. Bar staff were very friendly

Diner: we ate at the restaurant most nights and really enjoyed the eye fillet and honey chicken dishes. I did have an issue on the last night with my eye fillet being overcooked (asked for medium got well done) and when I sent it back, I waited an additional 20 mins for my return meal while my husband ate his meal alone. On this occation, the wait staff were very rude and the experience tainted my experience with the restaurant. Had this happened on the first night I would not have returned.

Casino: a bit small with only a handful of tables and a large number of pokie machines. Found all the casino staff friendly and enjoyed the numerous trips there.

Trip to Irriki Island: had to pay 1500 vt pp for boat across to Irriki but were given 1500 vt food and beverage credit to use while on the island. All guests are able to use all non-motorised equipment at no charge and went snorkling and canoeing, enjoyed lunch at the swim up bar but found the prices extreme and were not enjoyable. Had calamari and chips which looked like pork crackle and was just as hard. Very disappointed with food. Overall trip to Irriki good day out.

A couple of years ago we stayed at Irriki and when comparing Grand Hotel to Irriki, I would prefer Grand as it is cleaner, close to main attractions, reasonably priced and majority of staff are friendly Overall we had a wonderful trip and returned home very relaxed. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again and would recommend this hotel to others looking at going to Vanuatu.

Room Tip: Suggest upgrading to either panarma view or sweet (top floor). Sun very bright in the afternoon on the balcanies and would request either a room from 1 - 5 as this is closer to the water and is not affected by the sun in the afternoon.
