“Backpacker' choice”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 April 2013

Stayed there a couple of days ago, a real backpacker's place, very friendly and helpful staff, the rooms were clean enough, but in my case the TV didn't work. Only thing I didn't like that there were no windows in my room (actually there were, but with a brickwall built 1 inch in front of it), it seems only the (few) rooms facing the street have windows, most rooms are in the back of the house... I had to check out very early, around 5:30 a.m. but got served a breakfast incl. coffe and toast, which I really appreciated... Would come again, in case I could get a room with windows. Btw. there's a really nice chinese restaurant just 4 houses away (to the right) which serves Myanmar draft beer!

We stayed in Ocean Pearl II (NOT the same as Ocean Pearl - it's a sister hotel) - and we stayed twice, one week apart. The place was situated right by a small street market, with a buzzing bustle of local food sellers in the mornings. The rooms were clean and en-suite (although some are windowless). Breakfat was simple but wholesome - 1 egg, 2 pieces toast, jam, 1 banana, coffee. Good free wifi in the rooms, fast enough for Skype (rare in Myanmar!). Main reason to stay: wonderful staff - friendly and helpful; they even drew us an entire walking tour of the city going by all the specific things we wanted to see. This is by no means a luxury place - but was great value for Myanmar, and a really welcoming place to start and end our trip.

Room Tip: I forget the room number - but the room next to reception has windows and a balcony, where others do...

The rooms are mostly without any windows and thus a bit moldy. The rooms were clean and spotless some decorated with the Yellow Pages and a calender of the local Red Cross Office, some with a poster of Ronaldo (yes, the old Brazilian Ronaldo), but the staff was not really friendly. In the end they ordered a taxi to the bus station and confirmed a price of 7,000 Kyat. When the driver arrived they just increased the price to 9,000 which confirmed our bad impression. Of course we found our own taxi right on the street for 7,000. The people here were mostly not interested in accomodating guest but in milking a cash cow with one of the few foreigner guesthouses in Yangon.

We stayed here for three nights in the first week of February 2013. We had a double room, with private bathroom, AC, two windows and breakfast for $30,- a night.

The location might not be the best, but it is good enough. Most of the city attractions are within walking distance, if you like a little city hike.

The room we had was on the front of the hotel, and the noise ain't that bad. The street is a bit noisy at day time, but is pretty quiet at night. And hey, you're in Asia. Have you ever been in an Asian city without any street noise? And otherwise: Get used to it... the noise will hit you anyway when you get to Mandalay.

The room itself was great. It was clean and big, just like the bathroom. There was hot water 24/7. And in three nights we had just some small electricity failures (for Myanmar very good!).

The airport pickup will save you about $ 7,-. We also had to wait for pick-ups from another plane for about one hour. But then again, this is Myanmar. After the waiting, another 45 minute is spend on driving to the hotel. A nice drive to get a idea about the city townships.

The hotel definitely is best subscribed as a backpacker hotel. The breakfast is good, but not the best we had in Myanmar. And o, skip the coffee. Don't ask.

If you have a little patience, the service is great. We had our bus to Mandalay booked at the hotel. Just for $ 16,- pp we had a trip in a fast luxury bus (big seat, neck pillow, blanket, AC, small bottle of water and some cakes).

Overall, if you're looking for a easy stay in Yangon.... this place would be my choice.

Room Tip: My choice would be a room at the front... Windows guaranteed!

i would like to make this clear - in my view this is a backpackers hotel - we stayed several days and the room was not serviced at all
having said that we had an ok stay with really great staff
pick up from airport - they were there on time but we had to wait over an hour for another plane to land with further guests (who in the end did not arrive) - it is a long drive to hotel from airport - approx 45 mins
our room was on the 3rd floor - very steep stairs may not suit everybody
large double bed (mattress had seen better days but slept ok on it)
almost silent aircon was brilliant as was the wifi - we had no trouble with either
bathroom was a wetroom, quite annoying having to paddle through the wet everytime we wanted the loo (old flipflops were provided) shower was only luke warm but actually that was fine after a hot day in yangon! we stayed several days and the bathroom did get a bit whiffy at times. there was a window in our room and bathroom - we did not open for fear of mozzies getting in at night (we did not actually come across any in Yangon after all).
tv had one film channel which was Fox in english - watched some good films - reception was a bit hazy - I think Ocean Pearl says that they have satalite tv - this is rather an exaggeration!
Our room was at the front and was very very noisy between the hours of 5am (when the novices go passed singing) and around 11pm - during the night was ok. Loads of noisy traffic - street vendors etc. When the electric goes down the generator goes on right at the front - this only happened once when we got there for an hour or so.
Breakfast for us was ok - fried egg (1) toast (2 slices) a banana and coffee or tea.
Staff were exceptional - nothing was too much trouble - they organised flights & hotels for us for Heho - Mandalay - Bagan - at very compeditive rates. They sell bottled water at reception but almost next door do huge bottles that work out cheaper.
Come out of the hotel and turn left you have a 'western' style restaurant attached to another hotel - probably a safer bet than the local eateries. We were told to go to a chinese just down the street by the hotel manager - wish we had not of bothered - we ended up not eating the first night - say no more. A much much better option is the Strand Hotel (down towards the river and turn right onto the major road (cant miss it) walk for about 15 to 20 mins and it is on your right. We had an amazing meal there , they serve you a big bread basket free with the meal.
There are stupa's within walking distance and also the night market
Taxi needed for Yangons huge stupa
We did go back and stay for our final night in Myanmar- the room we had for that night was better than the first although the bed was still very hard.

Room Tip: Choose a room away from the front and hopefully with a window

I stayed in pear inn 2,good location about 15 minutes from the center of Yangon.friendly staff poor breakfast, some rooms with window some not, without fresh air. I think is the one of the cheaper hotel in yangon.is good to stay for 1 or 2 days no more, also you can bye from the hotel ticket to bag an or Ingle lake in good price.

Room Tip: Ask for room with window when you book this hotel

Arrived this evening, February 21nd. Booked a single room on December the 14th, that's MORE than two months ago and got a confirmation e-mail and reconfirmed my booking twice. The free pick-up from the airport was good. But on arrival they told me that my room was not available tonight, instead they have booked another hotel for me nearby, and I can have my room from tomorrow afternoon on. So bookings are NOT reliable! I have demanded to have a discount for this inconvenience but they only gave $3 discount. I have to pay $20 now. The hotel Triple H where they've put me in for the first night has small rooms and no breakfast. But I will walk to Ocean Pearl for the breakfast tomorrow, which was included in my booking. Triple H does have working wifi in the lobby (I'm using it now). Still a terrible experience which never happened to me before.
