There's not much I can add to the previous review. In short, the staff are super, the location is very good and the view from the roof is wonderful. On the downside, it is, of course, overpriced, but that is Yangon for you. The room was comfortable but bland and rather dated. The drinks at the rooftop bar are pricey.
OK for one or two nights and no real problems.

The main plus points for this hotel are the staff! A lovely group of smiling, impeccably dressed and helpful individuals. It would be difficult to fault them. Second plus point is the view from any rooms at the front/top of the hotel of the Shwe Dagon Pagoda. It is worth paying the few extra dollars for, seeing as you are paying through the nose anyway! If you don't get the view from the room, then go to the Sapphire Lounge rooftop bar which must have one of the best views in Yangon. However don't believe the bit about it being open till 3am! We stayed a week and it never opened much past 12 midnight-1am. It seemed to be subject to demand. If there were people around they would carry on. If not they closed up shop.

Breakfasts were plentiful and of good quality and in pleasant surroundings, but as has been mentioned many times, totally repetitive! Identical every morning, which is not good for guests staying more than one or two nights. But again, wonderfully staffed!

Location is also great. Quietly located in a side-street, yet in easy walking distance of the Bogyoke Aung San Market. (TIP! turn right out of the hotel front entrance, take the first right turn and walk straight on across one junction. You will come to a railway footbridge which is an interesting experience in itself. This takes you into the back entrance area of the market and is a bit of a short-cut!). It is also convenient for Shwe Dagon Pagoda as well as most other main attractions. There are usually several taxis waiting outside and the hotel staff are happy to help you negotiate prices with the drivers. Also turning right out of the front entrance will take you to several cafes/noodle shops/restaurants which seemed decent quality and reasonably priced.

The downsides to this hotel are linked, in being the quality of the rooms and the price! The rooms were reminiscent of 1970s style motel rooms which had been wallpapered by enthusiastic kindergarten kids! The furniture was chipped, battered and shabby. The beds were actually comfortable and the housekeeping was very good. But in general the room was a let-down. For what we paid we would have been able to have a top 5-star hotel in Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur but this seems to be the norm for Yangon. I'm guessing that supply and demand (plus greed?)as Myanmar emerges from its semi-isolation, have pushed up hotel prices across Yangon. They will have to be careful not to kill the goose that laid the golden egg!

The internet connection was patchy and unreliable, but I think this was the fault of the infrastructure rather than the hotel. Best reception was to be had on the roof-top.

Some general Yangon tips worthy of note! Money! Yes they are proud of the booth-style ATMs that are appearing around the city, but beware the charges! The one withdrawal we made cost us an unannounced fee of 5000 Kyats (app. £4.00 / $6.00) which is steep to say the least. Most people mention the fact that money change establishments only accept crisp new dollar bills, but most don't mention that they give lower exchange rates for lower denomination bills. $100s and $50s get a much better rate than $20s and $10s. Use $5s and $1s to pay for local services/entry fees/taxis as they in turn get a lower rate at the money changers. We also noticed that some of the larger branches have now started exchanging Euros and Singapore Dollars, so who knows what the future will bring?

The Myanmar people were lovely and would go out of their way to be friendly and helpful. Worth visiting their country just to experience this in itself.

As soon as they get their silly hotel price situation under control Myanmar and Yangon will become a serious force to be reckoned with in the Far East Tourist market.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a Pagoda view room at the front of the hotel. The higher the better!

ALFA hotel Yangon Myanmar

We chose it because it’s walking distance to Bogyoke Aung San market. The front entrance isn’t impressive but the rooms are a good size, the air con and hot water worked efficiently and the staff are super friendly. Our 8th floor room had a view of the Shwe Dagon- well, at least, the top of the steeple!

The breakfast buffet always included several kinds of fruit and the usual eggs but also some very tasty Shan Kau Swe (thick broth noodle soup with lots of boiled eggs and veggies, topped with crispy rice crackers).DELICIOUS!
We ate every evening at the Shwe Li BBQ situated in Kamayut. From iced trays you choose your fish ,prawn ,squid ,chicken ,pork, broccoli , okra, quails, etc and they grill according to your preferences .Very good tomato salads and very cold beer. Henry ,the restaurant’s very pleasant owner ,speaks American English – ( the result of a degree in medicine from S.W. Texas U.) and is always around to see all’s well.
We’ll looking forward to returning to both the ALFA and SHWE LI.

My wife and I stayed at Alfa Hotel for 7 consecutive nights; checked-in 15 Jan through 21 Jan 2013. We chose Alfa because of its superb location in the city centre, within 10 minutes walking distance to our favourite haunt: Bogyoke Aung San (Scott) Market. Also it is not far from Shwedagon and Sule Pagodas. Initially we tried to book East Hotel along Sule Pagoda Road, but gave it up as it was almost perpetually fully booked. Alfa Hotel came to our rescue; price wise, Alfa was much cheaper.

On our previous trips to Yangon, we always stayed at the 5 star Parkroyal Hotel, at the same price we are paying Alfa Hotel now. Park Royal room rate has gone up 5 times, without improvements in food and room. Alfa, a 3 star hotel obviously cannot be compared to the Park Royal. However, it is of a relatively reasonable standard for the price we paid.

We booked a Standard Double room; surprisingly the room was big, the bed very comfortable. The wooden furniture looks elegant. However, the cupboards have no shelves, and so clothes have to be kept in the drawers which are without a roller system, and all of them could not be opened without a struggle. The wall paper looks very tatty, the joints between the paper strips have flaked out. This made the room in a state of serious disrepair. We were made to understand that the hotel was built some ten years ago, but had closed down, due to low occupancy. It was re-opened a year ago to take advantage of the surge in demand. But the tatty condition of the wall paper which deteriorated in the humid atmosphere during the period the hotel was not operational, was unfortunately not attended to.

Alfa Hotel provided free WiFi in the rooms; the signal in our room on the 7th floorwas resonably strong. Although the WiFi connection was available 24 hours, the connection from the hotel server was shut down from midnight till morning. So internet facility was not available during this period for guests who need to link up to Europe or America.

The staff attentiveness and proactive attitude in providing customer service compensated and helped to offset the physical inadequacies of the hotel. Carol, the head of the operational team deserve a commendation; she was very helpful and efficient in her job in providing prompt responses to emails during the booking stage when special requests, etc. are being discussed Her command of the English language was excellent, something not common in Yangon.

We will stay at Alfa on our next visit to Yangon.

Alfa is a 2 star hotel at best. Rooms are ancient and certainly not even worth half the price. The location is excellent however as it is probably the closest hotel to the shwedagon paya and very close to Scott's market. The rooftop bar has a great view of the paya at night and was the best feature of the hotel. As with all hotels in Myanmar at the moment they are over priced as supply is well below demand. If like me you can't afford to stay at the strand or the traders then a hotel like the Alfa is your only option in Yangon.

There are some nice things about the hotel. The hotel has good, not great, quality furniture, linens, and overall amenities. For my room, the furnishings were nice. The location was good and the staff was friendly.

We booked two rms n were most dissipointed with the rooms. The a/c was very noisy , pillows were very hard, sewerage smell during the day n night through thr bathroom.Never had any hot or warm eggs or sausage for breakfast it was alway cold.Same breakfast everyday did not see ant bacon at all.The room was stinking of smoke and we r non smokers. The bathroom is very dingy n water leaking from the bottom of bathtub. I believe all the hotels in Myanmar are not worth the money they r asking but due to lack of hotel accommodation in the country n high influxes of tourist the hotels that were asking $20 to $100 about 8 months ago is now demanding $100 to $350 for the same without any improvements in food or accommodation . The staff are very good n gave their very best day n night. We stayed 5days n were very glad to check out n will never go back again.

Room Tip: Never trust on pictures you see on the web of the hotel . We were shocked in what we found.
