“Relatively cheap option if you stay in Yangon for one night”
Reviewed 12 August 2012

If we return to Myanmar we will avoid staying in Yangon and suggest you do the same to avoid the pollution and get better value for your dollar elsewhere. If you have to stay a night and get an early morning flight, not much point in having a great breakfast included if you dont get to eat it! Room OK. View of a concrete wall a metre away not so convincing!

So we stayed in the East Hotel on arrival (see my review), and saved about $15 by staying at the Eastern on the way out... Given Yangon's poor reputation for high prices and low hotel standards, I am giving this 3 and a half stars, pity trip advisor doesnt allow that, so I have been on the generous side and given them 4 stars to stop them slipping down the rankings.

Staff helpful, gave us a map, organised wake up call and taxi to airport, so nothing to complain about there. We found our way back to the great place where a whole fish done anyway you like for 3500K and a draft beer for 600k called Takafuji, a few doors down from the East Hotel at 176 Sule Pagoda Rd. I wish you could add a place directly onto tripadvisor when you find somewhere worth adding, as it serves mainly the locals at locals prices!

A note about currency. I mentioned before that you can now change money at the airport and at banks around the country all at the same rates. Problem with changing money back into dollars on the way out at Yangon airport is that the bank doesnt open until 9.30. A black marketeer fortunately bought our excess local money at a surprisingly reasonably good rate of 900k per dollar. I thought the dollar notes might be fake, and they werent in the best condition, but we have since changed them in Thailand and Cambodia so I am assuming they were OK. I made sure we werent dudded before making this review.

Very hard to believe we paid the same price for the Eastern Hotel as we did for the Thande Hotel in Bagan but that is Yangon for you!

With the exception of Payment by NEW bank note, it was OK. i think it is better to inform customer not to bring OLD bank note. I tried to smooth out crumpled paper, of course i could not do that. finally i needed to get new one from money changer. it was waste of time. Please advice us to bring new one when we book room through e-mail

Basic hotel ,

A little bit overpriced for what you get but its Yangoon so do not expect to much out of it unless you pay highet price. Rooms goes for 40 to 50 us a night. The service is alright , rooms are extremly basic , but farely big. Breakfest is egg toast, coffee or tea with a tiny glass of orange juice. They have like 8 servers for 6 clients in the morning so you won't wait to long for breakfest. The have wi-fi in the lobby which is very slow. Blackout are regular, several time daily, althought the generator comes on when it occurs. If you never been Yangoon the outside might look scarry at firs look but its a generally safe.

its your average place, not bad, but also not great. With more reasearch you might find something better, and if not this place can do for a night or two.

A good location close to a few restaurants along with 50th St Bar and Citymart. Clean and safe rooms with back generator which was useful with power cuts in the city in April and May. Friendly and reasonable breakfast plus can order food in breakfast room from other restaurants. Overall very good value for money. Only negative was that many of the rooms were quite dark.

Room Tip: 2nd and 6th floors (I think) have internet in rooms but lobby and breakfast room on ground floor can...

Other than several trips to Victoria Point in Myanmar for visa runs (not really counted as going to Myanmar) this was my first trip. Hotels in Myanmar are EXPENSIVE by Asian standards. I was horrified to pay $30 for the Eastern, a 10 to 15 dollar hotel in Thailand but soon learned it was actually quite good value for money. Clean, acceptable breakfast, very nice and helpful staff and good location. Stayed there at the start and at the end, recommended for the price.

Room Tip: wi fi on 2nd and 4th floors only

I stayed in a $35 a night 'deluxe' room. In the context of international hotels costing >$150 a night in Yangon, this hotel was terrific value.
The location is around a 20 min walk from the city, or a 1500kyat 5-10min taxi ride.
The room was perfectly adequate, with AC, hot water, 24 hour electricity, reasonably soft beds and a minibar.
For $35 a night, good value for money.

I stayed 2 nights when I came to Burma and 1 night just before leaving. Peoples were very nice. There was also, quite very rare, a wifi in the room. Breakfast was included, quite simple. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk to downtown. and you are not so far from good restaurants. Overall, very good.
