“This is Yangon”
Reviewed 10 December 2013

This is Yangon, Myanmar, get over yourselves!! After reading Tripadvisor, I was prepared for the worst. However it was quite acceptable: we had a large room with kettle & fridge, Aljazeera on cable. Got the room attendant to change the set up from a king bed to two singles. Bathroom bit tired but clean and with a shower curtain (uncommon in Myanmar).

Front rooms overlook station and can be noisy as no double glazing but you can see the Shwedagon Pagoda. Lift can get busy but it has a glass wall so you can enjoy the view once you are in it.

We were told breakfast starts at 6.30am but we chanced it at 6.15am on our day of departure and it was a hive of tourists. The buffet does not have any lamps/candles under the "hot" food but didn't bother me. Yes, staff need a bit of training and food needs replacing but I guess standards will improve.

Wifi in the rooms was a pleasant surprise.

Room Tip: Side or rear quieter.

I was not expecting luxury or immaculate service..this is a 3* hotel. But I was expecting a room and to be able to eat!! We stayed here for 2 nights on arrival in Yangon and again on our last night as part of a group arranged trip to Myanmar. (All travelling from different parts of the world). My husband and I arrived around 8am and, not surprisingly, our room wasn't ready. We were asked to check back around 11am which we did...no room. After a walk around Yangon we returned, no room yet, and eventually found the restaurant on the 14th floor...but no staff and really dirty table cloths. After some peering through doors we found someone and ordered food, which was just about ok, but no clean tablecloth!! On our return to the front desk at 2.30 (now very tired after our overnight flight) we still had no room and no-one who could really communicate with us in English. We got a room by making a fuss, (which left a bad taste in my mouth)...around 3/3.30pm. Not a good first impression of Myanmar. The room was in fact an upgrade...big and clean, with a safety box. At breakfast the following day almost everything had gone by 7.30am...no bread, eggs, coffee. After some complaints things were a little better the next day, but not much. The staff were conspicuous by their absence!! They just don't seem equipped to cope with the number of guests they have... Our room on return to Yangon was grubby, and desperately in need of repair...and no safe box in the room. This we had deemed essential after a member of our group had money stolen from her wallet, which was in her rucksack in her room, on our first day. So we changed room...this time we got a small room next to a lift shaft. The attitude of the senior staff members is about as unhelpful as it can get...you are made to feel it is your fault that there is no safety box in your room or that there is no food left for breakfast. The exception to this were the bell-boys...smiling and helpful. There is no way I could ever recommend this hotel to someone coming to Yangon!

While it's true, hotels are expensive in Myanmar there are better hotels to stay at while visiting Yangon especially in light of how much these rooms cost. The only reason why my friends and I stayed at the Asia Plaza was because this was the hotel that Intrepid had chosen for the start and end of our trip.

The hotel's rooms are generally large but it's true as reported by others, that the rooms smell damp and are generally run down. The breakfast was an awful event with large line-ups around the coffee and drinks table and the toaster and food just running out. WIFI as previously noted is very slow.

The worst part of our stay had to be when a friend of mine had her money stolen from her room. Their room safe did not work despite several requests to have it fixed and more importantly, during this time, they were not informed that the hotel had a safety box for patrons, located near the reception desk. Cleaning staff had come to visit earlier in the day but interestingly enough, nothing was cleaned and the room safe was never fixed.

What is terrible is the way management at the hotel handled/responded to this incident. They skirted the issue and didn't look into the matter further. Perhaps any assurance by management would have been somewhat reassuring than nothing at all.

So, if you are staying here - lock up your valuables or use the safety deposit box located in the reception area that staff may or may not inform you about. Do expect a large room and friendly door staff. Do expect the closeness to Scott's Market and other key sites. Don't expect much from breakfast or management should anything go wrong - at least from our experience.

Room Tip: higher floors have a better view of the City.

I stayed here at the start and end of an Intrepid tour. I was a little worried by some of the reviews on Trip Advisor so was pleasantly surprised by the spacious rooms and hot water. The lift is extremely slow and breakfast one morning was a bit chaotic, with the staff not restocking many items, but this is perhaps to be expected in a country that has only just opened up to tourists. The staff were extremely friendly, arranging taxis and letting me store luggage for two weeks at no charge. I would stay here again.

This hotel was undergoing a renovation, probably in anticipation of the peak season November/December. One day we were informed that there would not be any electricity, unfortunately this included the lift. A helpful member of the lobby staff produced a big torch and escorted us up the stairs. The room was clean and spacious, with a safety deposit box. Breakfast was on the top floor, a good variety of fruit, toast or fried rice. We had dinner one night and the food was very good. However it would have been helpful if there had been a menu in the bedroom. The WiFi was slow. Great views from the roof.
We had read elsewhere that there might be problems with bedbugs, so we brought out a can of spray as a precaution, and were not affected. Bedbugs are probably a problem in any area that has monsoon weather.
The location was good as it was close to Ruby Market, where there was a coffee restaurant, and supermarket to buy bottled water, or the local rum or whisky. It was also about a 20 minute walk to Scotts Market, which seemed to have the best collection of t-shirts in the whole of Myanmar, along with other tourist souvenirs.

This is Yangon so I wasn't expecting too much if I wasn't staying in the flashiest of hotels. It's a good downtown location, the staff are great and it has everything you'd need even slow wifi. But it is very rundown and scruffy around the edges. But if you're not too fussy it does the trick. The view from the roof (breakfast) bar of the Shwedagon is amazing and a lot cheaper than similar ones elsewhere. Beware being woken at 4am by the temple loud speaker to get everyone to cook food for the monks - take ear plugs - but I reckon this happens everywhere in Yangon.

Room Tip: Not temple side if that's possible in Yangon

Stayed here as part of an Intrepid tour. The rooms on our arrival and return where basic comfortable and clean had a great view. Breakfast was excellent especially the omelette. Special mention has to go to the staff who ran around looking after our every needs. The environment around the hotel fabulous. If you get a chance go to the Ruby Mart down the road and try the red and green curry. We spent most of the time sleeping on top of the bed. Take a silk sleeping bag liner with you to sleep in
