Strategically located for the Shwedagon Paya

Review of Yuzana Hotel
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 5 Mar 2012
And some of the hotel rooms have direct view of the Paya which is splendid at night time when seen from the hotel window (see my youtube videos on this. Search Youtube using the words TravellerJ Yuzana hotel room). The hotel is quite old and one can only try to imagine the days of its former glory. Yet the room prices are VERY reasonable, the staff service is very good , the breakfast buffet is plentiful and well prepared and I would consider it , overall , as excellent value for money
Date of stay: February 2012
Room Tip: This is a MUST. Try at all cost to get a room with a view at the Shwedagon pagoda and preferably...

Don't be deceived by Myanmar's chepness: 23 dollars for deluxe room is too little for something decent even in Yangon. Yes the room is quite big and the Shwedagon view is to die for (if your are lucky to get a direct view which is not guaranteed). But it is really dirty, with layers of dust even in breakfast room. And your Shwedagon view is spoiled by dirty windows and walls in view.
Breakfast is frugal, and lots of other small faults will spoil your stay here: for example, it's a challenge to get your boiled water or an electric changer (and you have absolutely no problems with your european-type devices in other places all over the country).
Staff is ok and will try to make your stay better. The exchange rate is also ok.
Wireless is very slow and is not free. The location isn't good (except for the view)% you need 15 to 30 minutes to get to Shwedagon by foot (or 10 minutes by taxi), and 10-12 minutes by tai to the city center.

I selected this hotel for the Shwedagon pagoda night view but from other hotels in Yangon, you can do it as well. Only one good point maybe that this hotel is close to the pagoda maybe 15-20 minutes on foot but the thing is foreigners without any help how to get there would never reach there. I could not do that and took a taxi at later convenience. However the accommodation is so so and worth the money so if you are not sticking to the closest view, it is quite all right to stay there..Early morning breakfast box was poor i.e. one boiled egg, tiny pieces of sausage, a monkey banana and a piece of bread.

Room tip: Pagoda view would be better.

We were on our way to Bagan but had to stay overnight in Yangon to catch our flight. We chose Yuzana only because it has a commanding view of the Shwedagon Temple Complex - and that was exactly what was the only good thing about this hotel.

If you have seen the horror movie "Echo", Yuzana Hotel could have been the perfect setting. Old, dimly-lit, peeling coats of paint, tattered carpet ... crawling insects!!! We only stayed for 8 hours - and hardly slept at all. The air conditioning was terrible - making all those funny noises. Swatted TWO flying cockroaches too.

We should have spent the 8 hours in the airport waiting for our flight to Bagan - and saved US$60!

The staff were fine, especially the restaurant staff. However, the rooms are old, but the toilet/bath was bad. The tub looks like a scene from Psycho, paint is peeling and some of the sink looked like it wasn't installed properly. When we checked in, we had to look for a staff on the floor to fix our lights.

The best thing about this hotel is that it is near Shwedagon Pagoda and our room have great views.

The restaurant menu is horrible which mostly have Chinese. We had sweet and sour pork because that's the only thing that was decent even though it was too oily. Like I said, the best thing is the service, I was taken care of. It's sad that that hotel is just bad.

Stayed 2 nights in this hotel last month.
The hotel did have a slightly oldish exterior.......

The staff-right from the bell boy, to the door keeper and the front desk were very warm and hospitable and helpful..

After a smooth check-in I went to my rather hugh room with an amazing view of the magnificent Shwe Dagon..

The room was quite big, spacious and comfortable for a single pax....
There was also a bath tub with well stcked shampoo and bath foam,a reasonably priced well-stocked mini-bar ....as well as really comfortable room slippers ....but the hightlight was a magnificient Shwe Dagon view ........I paid only USD 27 with a/c a night with breakfast for all this.....a steal I guess.........Honestly, the view was worth the full money I guess

Imagine waking up to the sight of the beautiful Shwe Dagon well light up....at night it was a wonder !!

The hotel also has an attched supermaket, where you can get a good deal on local pair of jeans or some colourful shirts and handbags....

The breakfsat was also good...decentr variety with the staff more than glad to help serve you with a smile !!

All in all a steal for the price you pay...........well sized and stocked rooms, good cooling, hospitable staff and above all the Magnificient view ( be sure to ask for this as its optional I guess.....else you may get City View room)
