“Great location but not value for money hotel”
Reviewed 28 May 2013

One thing about this hotel is its location. It is located at the heart of Downtown area very near the Sule Pagoda which adds convenience to our stay. However, the price that we paid for a double room of $55 was not worth it. Breakfast was just right, with the butter and jelly all for you to spread. The room is quiet small with no windows and the CR has no exhaust. Good that is has elevators. In fairness, it maybe one of the better hotels in the area but not so when compared with other cities in Southeast Asia in terms of value for money. Overall, the hotel is just average but you can find other hotels near the area which is cheaper with the same amenities.

We stayed in the May Shan for three nights and found it clean and comfortable. However, the rooms are tiny with just enough space to walk around the bed. We had a double room with window ( yes the window is an optional extra ). The room had a good clean comfortable bed, excellent air con and TV. The bathroom is also smallish but clean and functional, if you call a shower over the toilet functional, but it is a fact of life in Asia. The breakfast was fine, orange juice? fried egg, toast and bananas with tea or coffee. The hotel is located right next to the Sule Pagoda and is just a short taxi ride to just about anywhere. We found for the price in Yangon this was a good find as we place clean and comfortable at the top of our priorities. There are a few restaurants nearby but one we found to be better than the others was the Suzuki Cafe, a couple of hundred meters up the road ( opposite direction to the pagoda ) on the opposite side of the road to the hotel, just past the stairs to the overpass.

Room Tip: We stayed at the back of the hotel on the seventh floor which was quiet and had a city view. However...

I spent two nights at the Mayshan Hotel in Yangon, paying $45/single. The hotel is in a great location near the Sule Paya in central Yangon. The hotel was very busy with tourists when I was there, tourist numbers (and hotel prices) have really risen considerably in the past year so the quality for the price isn't great. Hotel had free wifi but speed was very slow.

My room was very small with no windows but was clean, had aircon and ensuite bathroom with hot water. I was able to arrange my plane tickets to Bagan via the hotel and paid for them on arrival. When I arrived my room was not yet ready so I wandered around Yangon for a few hours.

$10 - $15 Guesthouse / Hostel (I am being generous with that figure) charging $59 S.E.Asia "Hotel" prices. A disappointing stay at May Shan Hotel. The "Hotel" needs a good clean from top to bottom before anyone else should be allowed to stay there. Dirty, run-down and outdated. If I hadn't booked and paid online with no chance of a refund I would have moved out. As it was I spent as little time as possible at the "Hotel". The grout in the bathroom was green and black with mould, the tiled bedroom walls had bits of unknown matter stuck on them, the stairwells had dirty laundry, tissue, empty packaging, plastic bags and whatever else had been swept across the floors. I didn't see a mop and bucket being used anywhere during my stay. Breakfast consisted of a banana, coffee or tea and 2 slices of half cooked toast with a Fried Egg cooked with varying degrees of incompetence. The rooms have no safe, no tea or coffee making facilities, no wifi except in reception (very slow) and are more what you would expect to find staying in a cheap hostel. If I was offered a free weeks stay at May Shan Hotel in its current condition, I would refuse it. I have read numerous reviews on this Hotel making excuses for the quality with comments like "everything is expensive in Yangon", "supply and demand", "developing country" etc. Facts: Labour is cheap in Myanmar and the high profits this "Hotel". (They told me they were always full). So, if you are full you are earning over $1,500 per night, obviously you are not investing back into the business. Your guests should not be subjected to this poor level of accommodation. I understand wifi, power cuts etc are beyond your control, however there are no excuses for filth and lack of regular maintenance. I hope you clean up your business or close your doors.

Good, clean hotel centrally located next to Sule Paya. Very friendly helpful staff. Breakfast is toast, fried egg,coffee/tea,bananas and very filling. Hotel has computer that you can use for reasonable cost and very good connection or free wi-fi. Good water pressure and hot water. In all a comfortable hotel with helpful staff if not a little expensive. There is also a lift which is great if you don't want to take the stairs!! Also check out the view from the roof.

We had a triple room (room was recommended by lonely planet). It was clean adn with air-con, but it was quite small and very basic. It had a small old TV and a small bathroom (albeit with hot water). The beds were not made every day and the water was not replenished either. We had to pay for water and one bottle had something quite curious floating in it. The breakfast consisted of toast with butter/jam, tea or coffee and a banana. The best thing about the room was the view across to Sule Pagoda and the fact that the hotel is ideally situated in the city near all the hustle and bustle. The worst thing about the hotel was the price. At $90 per night for what we got we thought it was way too much money. $60 would have been more reasonable and in line with the other hotels that we stayed in Myanmar.

Room Tip: Look around for better priced rooms in the area.

Our room was small, windowless and very old and dated but it was clean. It was not the kind of room you looked forward to coming back to at the end of the day. The breakfast was pretty basic with a banana, egg and bread. It was also one of the more expensive hotels we stayed at in Myanmar.
On the plus side the May Shan is in a great location and the owners and staff are very hospitable, knowledgable and helpful.
