Owner description: The city's biggest tourist attraction is this immense Buddhist shrine built approx. 2500 years ago.

Went in the early morning, as it open 0430. Hence we managed to see the lighted Pagoda and the day time.
Read some reviews saying you'll need to bring wet tissues in case of the dust, but since it was the early morning, the staffs actually just cleaned the floor.
The weather is cooling and it's actually quite comfy to enjoy touring the whole temple.
Understanding the place actually require some explanation as it's different from other Buddhism, but take a good look at all the different pagodas.
Tourist usually enter from the South entrance, whereby you'll need to pay a archaeology fee (or something similar) and you can keep your shoes at the box without the need for donation. It's out of your own will if you're keen to donate though.

We walked here from our hotel which turned out to be a longer walk than anticipated but it was well worth it. The complex of pagodas is amazing. We walked around once then sat for a while just watching the many and varied visitors. Then we walked around again. It is quite stunning.

This is a must visit place. As you enter into the main compound, you will feel a sense of wonder and serenity. This is a 2500 year old shrine.

Visitors must remove shoes before the first step at any entrance.

Burmese walk around the stupa in a clockwise manner. The main stupa has a section that is main from pure gold and within it, it is filled with treasures beyond imagination - all from donations by the people. At the top of the stupa, it is encrusted with 4531 diamonds and one 72 carat diamond. And you wonder if the riches of this country is used for advancements and investments, Myanmar may even overtake Vietnam in its economy.

Every other step you will see statues of Buddha and people praying.... A must to visit

I visited this place in September 2013. I guess I joined the rush before the Franchise chains arrive.
This place felt like Magic Kingdom. It is huge with many temples and local deities. Reminded me of India to some extent. People were washing the deities in milk and or water. It was golden in color. I was trying to imagine where did the British loot go after thee defeated the Burmese. It contains lots of precious jewels. There is a fee of USD $5 or $10 for foreigners.

I had a nice discussion on Burmese life with a Buddhist person who used to be a banker in his working life. I took local buses without knowing the language from my hotel. People were friendly and helpful.

Shwedagon Pagoda is the biggest one in Myanmar, it displays an aura of holiness. Full of history, culture and amazing stories. Going there in the afternoon is an underestimation of the heat and temperature, going there in the evening is recommended. There is an entrance fee for foreign visitors. AND, there is free WiFi coverage!!
