I normally stay at Traders Hotel, but on this Jan 2012 trip stayed at both Parkroyal and East Hotel. On arrival at the airport, most taxi drivers already know of the East Hotel, and if they don't just tell them it is opposite Traders. It appears they are trying to get US$8 for a taxi trip from the airport to the hotel, but the "normal" price is still $7. The best exchange rate we could get this trip was 860 Kyats/US$1. Anyway, about the Hotel! The location is great, within walking distance of Sule Pagoda and Scott Market. I'd suggest you get a taxi to the Shwedagon, tho ($2-3). The ground floor comprises reception and dining area, and is all modern and quite efficient. The folk at Reception are helpful and accommodating (sic). The lift is quite tiny, so tour groups may need several trips. I seem to recall about 9 floors. We stayed on the 3rd floor. The rooms are fairly small, but modern and comfortable, with tea-making facilities, shower (no bath), and security-card access. The bathroom/toilet area is separated from the sleeping area by partitioning and blinds, but is otherwise open to the rest of the room, so be sure to share the room with someone close and/or liberal-minded. Good aircon, large-screen TV, free WIFI (code on room key), and comfy beds make the place hospitable. Only 2 people per room tho, and if you are a family with children, you'll need another room. We had sleeping bags for the kids but no extra beds, and the floors are tiled, so not a goer. Road noise was negligible, and we all slept well. Breakfast was included in the room tariff, and was OK, but not spectacular (ABF: eggs, bacon, sausages, toast, cereal (muesli swimming in an ocean of warm milk), coffee/tea, juice, 3 fresh fruit). Burmese and Chinese set breakfasts also available. The staff were helpful, and the few inherent language problems (they speak limited English) were overcome easily. The staff will organize a taxi to the airport on departure (another $7). Tipping is optional, but appreciated. The design of the rooms (especially the bathroom) suggests they will show wear and tear quickly, so suggest you stay there sooner than later.
