“Disappointed both times”
Reviewed 4 February 2013

We stayed there twice, one night on Dec 8 when we first arrive and one night on Dec 22 before we left yangon. The first time we stayed in a deluxe room on the third floor. The room is clean, our window looks into a wall so the room is dark with not much lighting. When we checked out the receptionist asked us to wait, we do not know what happened. 5 or 10 minutes later a guy came down and said we have to pay $4 dollar because one of the hand towel is stained. My husband said he spilled his coffee so he used it to clean the mess. He said we have to pay for it because the stain will not come out. My husband said what if he asked hotel staff to come to our room and clean. He said we should have done that and we were not charged. I was furious and asked to talk to the manager, he said he is the housekeeper manager and lower the price to $3. We travelled a lot and never did we see such a rude and poor service. We had to stay our last night there because we could not cancel without loosing money using Agoda.
The second time we stayed on the 8th floor with view of the pagoda but it was just a small top portion of the Pagoda that we could see. This time it was a different set of problems. The sink has no hot water. After my husband shower, we rested for may be 15 minutes. When he got out of bed he discovered that the floor was flooded. Our luggage on the floor was wet, good thing is that the luggage is waterproof so our clothing were not wet. They came trying to fix the problem. My husband ask for a different room or at least provide a place for me to shower but they said no. I finally got a hot shower in my room after they mopped the floor. We think the flooding was due to clogged drainage system. We will not stay at this hotel again. You may say we were unlucky but stay away from it to avoid the diappointment. The pro is that it is in a very good location and has good wi fi.

We stayed here for 2 nights on the recommendation of a friend at the start of a private tour.
East Hotel's central location meant we could walk to Scott's Market and many local restaurants, and we ate several times at the excellent small place mentioned by JMS50.
Yes, the bathroom arrangement of the hotel owes more to style than function - management should invite the designer back to battle with the clunky 'bead' curtain in the middle of the night - but rooms are clean and comfortable, and service, from reception through housekeeping to the friendly doorman, first-class.
There are more sympatique hotel rooms to be had in the suburbs Yangon - The Savoy at one price point, the Alamanda Inn at another - but for a clean, comfortable bed in a central location East Hotel is hard to beat.

Room Tip: A room at the rear on a high floor will avoid street noise. Instead of the expensive restaurant at...

I stayed here before and after a recent group trip with Exodus. I was very pleased in all respects. I found the rooms to be of a very high standard, newly decorated and clean but with the slightly quirky bathroom arrangement which other have mentioned. I was on my own so it didn't matter.

Breakfast is adequate, chosen from a menu. The daytime menu has a wide choice and if you have just arrived and don't feel too adventurous, it's a safe choice.

The staff are friendly and helpful: the wi-fi is good (for Myanmar) and free. Finally, after staying one night at Asia Plaza (just around the corner) I was very glad to come back here.

This is probably your best average choice in yangoon, it is central, clean convinient, and clean, yangoon is very expensive if you are looking for a nice cheap central hotel and this one has it all, they are quite helpfull, but remember these two points, take the taxi on your own and bargain hard just in front there is an expensive hotel and taxi drivers think everybody is hosted in traders hotel one of the most expensive hotels in town. Another point is not to leave the towels dirty I mean use them just to dry yourself, they will chech how dirty the towels are and if the service girl says it is dirty they will try to charge the price of the towel, This policy does exists in more than one hotel there in Myanmar, it sounds estrange but I supose this is because they are white and difficult to clean them up, So leave the towels clean or pay for it.

Anyway this is a hotel I would recomend with no doubt.

Room Tip: Rooms with view of the pagoda are something you do not have to pay for it you can hardlysee the pago...

I’ve been coming to Burma now for about 30 years, but never have I seen changes as dramatic as those that are going on right now. Burma is now in the crosshairs as THE destination, and though the country is anxious to welcome as many tourists as possible, the infrastructure has a long way to go to catch up. Case in point: hotel rooms. There are simply not enough to go around. Hence prices for most hotels have tripled or quadrupled in the past year and the value of what you get for what you pay has plummeted.
The East Hotel is a pleasant enough three star hotel. Rooms are generally tidy, cleverly designed, and small but at the top of the 3-star choices in Yangon. When it opened a couple years ago rooms were going for $35. Now you can’t get in for less than $90. You can’t blame the hotel for the crush of tourists wanting rooms. There is nothing wrong with the hotel. The staff is friendly, the breakfast is skimpily decent, and the central location is very good. Rooms are what you would expect in a 3 star hotel. For $50 this is a decent value. At $90 it is a ripoff. But among the 3 star ripoffs in Yangon, it ranks at the top.

Stayed at the East Hotel for 1 night in January 2013. It took ages (1 hour +) to get there in the mid day traffic from the Domestic Airlines airport (not sure of the name of this airport). Not bad to get from the hotel to the Air Asia (International) airport the following morning before 6 am (20-25 mins). Hotel staff very friendly and very helpful. Room clean, flat screen tv nice, bed fine, WiFi ok but slow, bathroom set up quite strange. The toilet and sink are separated from the bedroom by a "bead" curtain and the shower is like something right out of a strip club, a wood & plexiglass phone booth type of set up located very near the foot of the bed (!?). Very funny (as in funny strange, not funny ha ha). The hotel is in a good location near Scott market and near the Colonial district. We had a decent cheap lunch at a small Thai eat-on-the street place (just out the front door of the hotel and turn to left, walk about 200m). We had a nice last-night-in-Myanmar dinner with a good city lights view at the top of an office tower (out the front door of the hotel and turn right about 200 m). Didn't eat at the hotel itself so can't comment. This was an okay place to stay for a short stop in Yangon, despite the funny bathroom, I would stay there again.

East Hotel is small, like one of the boutique hotels I stayed in Paris. However, of all the hotels I stayed in Myanmar, it is among the newest and most modern, as well as most comfortable. Rooms are accessed using key cards and have internet access.

The room itself is small, modern and comfortable. Dangling curtains of hollow decorative wooden blocks separating the WC and the room. The shower room, next to the room, is separated with a curtain. Bed is comfortable and room comes with a flat screen TV. There is wifi, but slow throughout.

Breakfast was at the tiny coffeehouse near the lobby/entrance. Spread was little, but food was OK.
