East Hotel
Ranked #60 of 161 Hotels in Yangon (Rangoon)

Great location and comfortable base for exploring central Yangon by foot.
Small hotel (45 bedrooms) with relaxed atmosphere. Friendly, informative and helpful staff.
Rooms clean and simply furnished. Complaints about the lack of privacy in some of the bedrooms with the bathrooms and wc's is being corrected, so we were informed by the ''hands on'' hotel manager.
The Amber Cafe on the ground floor has an excellent choice of tasty dishes and is a popular lunch time venue for outsiders.
Beware...very slow lift.

Stayed at the East for a week in June 2013. The location of the hotel is nearly perfect. Walking distance to the Strand and Yangon River waterfront. Sule Pagoda is just down the street and serves as a terrific landmark. The rooms are spotless and the beds are very comfortable and pretty soft. I slept great.

A lot has been made of the unconventional bathrooms. I was traveling by myself, so it wasn't an issue. But there was a window from the sleeping area in the shower area of my room. If you're traveling with a stranger or bunking up with a co-worker, you might want to pull the shades. (There is a shade on the window.)

The cafe in the lobby serves an excellent breakfast with eggs cooked to order, fresh fruit and breads. The cafe also serves good meals at dinner and lunch. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I left the hotel one morning at 04.30 and they packed me a box breakfast of fruit and a hard boiled egg. I didn't ask for it - but it was waiting for me when I got to the lobby.

The negatives are that the internet in the hotel is very slow. I think this might be a Myanmar issue rather than a hotel issue. Myanmar is not yet the most wired country in Asia. And I think the rooms are a little overpriced. This I know is a Myanmar issue. Myanmar opened itself to mass tourism but it's not really ready for it and there's a shortage of hotels in Yangon. The law of supply and demand is at work here, all hotel rooms in Yangon are overpriced. My room was about $80 (US). I think that in Bangkok it wouldn't have been more than $35.

I really enjoyed my time at the East and wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

Room Tip: Rooms above the fifth floor on the southwest side of the hotel (507, 607, 707 etc) have a great view...

East has a great location, perfect to explore the downtown area on foot. Cafe for breakfast good, staff very friendly. BIG drawback of you are not on your own: toilets are basically in the room, behind the cupboard - no door. If you go to the higher floor don't even think about what happens in case of emergencies. The staircase is rather small.....

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a higher floor if you want a window

Excellent location to walk to nearby attractions = Chinatown, Scott's Market, fruit and veggie street markets, and busy Pansodan Street for shopping and enjoying the locals living their lives. Check-in and check-out process is excellent. Reception staff, bell boy and restaurant staff very polite and helpful - - a big plus. A cold delicious welcome drink awaits you when you arrive. 2 complimentary bottles of water in the room. Free Wi-fi and breakfast with the cost for your room another plus. In-room Wi-fi is not reliable. Wi-fi works fine in the lobby and restaurant area. Our Room 506 is dated, cracked tile and uncomfortable hard pillows. Management should consider offering their quests softer pillows so they can enjoy a more comfortable night's sleep after a busy day sightseeing. Breakfast is okay. There's a nice selection. Eggs are prepared any style but only tomatoes' and cheese are offered for your omelette. If you are noise sensitive, rooms facing the street offer street traffic noise. There's a movie theater next door to the hotel that's very convenient on a rainy day. Ask for a city map at reception.

East Hotel has good rooms, well lighted, comfortable beds, good bathrooms with plenty of hot water. Breakfast is served off the menu. The location of the hotel is right smack in the middle of downtown with plenty of restaurants nearby and the Sule Pagoda is about 2 blocks down the street.

I stayed at East hotel for 2 nights. Both nights were booked by my package tour company. It was supposed to be 3 star, but 1 star is being overly generous. I have stayed at better hostels before.

First of all, bathroom doesn't have a door. That already tells you quite a bit of this place. I complained to the tour guide and front desk agent during check in on my 2nd stay. Front desk agent kept saying everything is fine and it was taken care of by giving me another room. The room was 2 doors down my previous room and still doesn't have a bathroom door. So secondly, service is none existent.

The only good things are free water bottles, decent locatiob and somewhat decent Thai food. By the way, food at the hotel is at least 2x than at an outside restaurant.

Overall, a terrible experience and the worst hotel I have ever stayed at in Myanmar and in the entire world.

I traveled alone for leisure during long weekend and was looking for not too high end but cozy, clean and conveniently located hotel. The hotel provided me sufficient service and experience, including wifi sccess, advice for tour, and recommended destination in English. One of the best thing I can say about the hotel is not only the hospitality but location and newness of facility in terms of their fee; the cost performance is very high.
