“Rip off price”
Reviewed 27 July 2013

Overpriced at around 90 US per night, a similar hotel down the road is 45 US. No door to toilet is a terrible layout for more than one person, and the shower is a clear glass goldfish bowl into the room. Never seen an arrangement like that! Staff in general are really nice, but one guy on the desk is very confrontational and can never be wrong. Our room flooded, the shower tray was blocked and the wash basin was also blocked. Considering that Myanmar is one of the worlds poorest countries the price at this place is scandalous. They don't take Visa etc, have multiple pricing according to how you book and are really creaming it off tourists. You can do much better elsewhere. 4 euros a beer when everywhere else charges 2 is unacceptable.

Very good location with some nice resturants close by. Breakfast is above average with made-to-order eggs etc. The rooms however could be nicer. A lot of noice from the hallway, shower is in the living room area and there is no door to the toilet. The rooms are also lacking basic stuff like: fridge, suitcase stand, nightstand with light, enough lighting in general and somewhere to hang your towel in the bathroom.

Not too big, located at the centre of the old city. Nice clean room, but very basic. If you prefer something more elegant, do not come here. Breakfast is basic, but it is included and there is internet.
A basic, cozy and tidy place to sleep in!

The best things about this place are its excellent and friendly staff, and the location.
You can use it as a great base to explore and walk to many nearby attractions already listed.
The Reception staff are fantastic, nothing is too much trouble. The restaurant is basic, and the breakfasts are very ordinary by most asian standards, but again the staff are polite and helpful.
Complinetary water, as much as you like is a big plus. Taxi's wait outside if you need one.
The beds are comfy, but the rooms are basic with the toilet and shower setup all within the same room.
Zero view from the 2 rooms we stayed at the start and end of our trip, but who wants to stay in the room when there is so much to see and explore outside?
Not expensive, so would stay again

East was the worst place we stayed in our month-long SE Asian adventure and the most expensive.

Given its location across the street from Trader's Hotel, we thought that East would be in a nice area but it felt dodgy. The hotel smelled badly, particularly the rooms which smelled moldy. I asked to see multiple rooms but all smelled moldy. The hotel staff explained that it was a function of the design of the bathrooms with wood that gets wet and then becomes moldy. I am not allergic to mold but really found this unpleasant.

There was also only limited hot water - at best, lukewarm - and very little water pressure.

There is essentially no internet service including in the hotel's lobby.

We did not eat in the hotel and therefore cannot comment on the food.

Although not the hotel's fault, there was construction going on nearby which continued throughout the night which was not muffled sufficiently by the windows.

Otherwise, the room was clean, linens were fresh and staff members were helpful. And the hotel supplied unlimited bottles of water.

Great location and comfortable base for exploring central Yangon by foot.
Small hotel (45 bedrooms) with relaxed atmosphere. Friendly, informative and helpful staff.
Rooms clean and simply furnished. Complaints about the lack of privacy in some of the bedrooms with the bathrooms and wc's is being corrected, so we were informed by the ''hands on'' hotel manager.
The Amber Cafe on the ground floor has an excellent choice of tasty dishes and is a popular lunch time venue for outsiders.
Beware...very slow lift.

Stayed at the East for a week in June 2013. The location of the hotel is nearly perfect. Walking distance to the Strand and Yangon River waterfront. Sule Pagoda is just down the street and serves as a terrific landmark. The rooms are spotless and the beds are very comfortable and pretty soft. I slept great.

A lot has been made of the unconventional bathrooms. I was traveling by myself, so it wasn't an issue. But there was a window from the sleeping area in the shower area of my room. If you're traveling with a stranger or bunking up with a co-worker, you might want to pull the shades. (There is a shade on the window.)

The cafe in the lobby serves an excellent breakfast with eggs cooked to order, fresh fruit and breads. The cafe also serves good meals at dinner and lunch. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I left the hotel one morning at 04.30 and they packed me a box breakfast of fruit and a hard boiled egg. I didn't ask for it - but it was waiting for me when I got to the lobby.

The negatives are that the internet in the hotel is very slow. I think this might be a Myanmar issue rather than a hotel issue. Myanmar is not yet the most wired country in Asia. And I think the rooms are a little overpriced. This I know is a Myanmar issue. Myanmar opened itself to mass tourism but it's not really ready for it and there's a shortage of hotels in Yangon. The law of supply and demand is at work here, all hotel rooms in Yangon are overpriced. My room was about $80 (US). I think that in Bangkok it wouldn't have been more than $35.

I really enjoyed my time at the East and wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

Room Tip: Rooms above the fifth floor on the southwest side of the hotel (507, 607, 707 etc) have a great view...
