“Poor Value but good location.”
Reviewed 11 February 2014 via mobile

As elsewhere in Myanmar accommodation is nearly double what you'd expect to pay in neighbouring countries such as Thailand,Laos and Cambodia. Our room was a ridiculously high price of US$130-same room Thailand US$30!The room was small with a cubicle shower in middle of room, with a minute separate toilet/wash basin with half a wooden door so you could here everything when your partner used the toilet!Small reception area and breakfast/dining area-nowhere to sit and relax!breakfast was basic.Plus points included good location to Sule Pagoda,Scott's Market and opposite from Traders Tavern.Yangon is a fascinating city but I will not return again until prices become reasonable.

We stayed here 2 nights end of October and paid $76 a night which was a good price for this type of hotel in Yangon. The location is very good for the city and sightseeing, we walked everywhere from here: Shwedagon Paya and the around the town.
The reception staff are friendly and helpful. Breakfast was included and there was a choice of 3 different breakfasts although very basic it was ok.
The room was clean and comfortable with free wifi. The only negative was the shower/facility, there is no separation from the bedroom. The toilet is literally next to the bed. A sliding door could have easily been placed but there is only some decoration hanging down to slightly obscure you from seeing the toilet or the person sitting on the toilet when lying in bed ! So, only convenient for couples really. The shower only had a flimsy curtain. It took a long time for the water to get hot and it was completely blocked. When we called reception they sent someone straight away and the drainage improved a little.
The following night we had to call reception again due to the water not going down. The shower floor was covered in wooded planks that were not quite stable and you had to be careful not to loose your balance. Underneath these planks was dirt and dirty water. It was quite disgusting having to shower like this.
I would have easily given 5 stars if it hadn't been for these issues.

We were placed in a room in a building next door to the main hotel that you accessed by going outside, through a separate door, then up a long staircase. The bedroom was located in a built in balcony over the sidewalk. This meant that the noise of the numerous diesel generators was clearly audible as was the traffic noise. For an overnight stay it was OK but I wouldn't like to be there much longer.
The dinner in the restaurant on the ground floor of the main building was OK but the price of Myanmar beer - $9 - was a rip-off (bought it in another hotel later for $3).
Don't exchange $US at the hotel. They only gave us 9000 Kyat for $US100. Airport exchanges were offering about 9700 the next day.
+ves: Plenty of "free" bottled water, comfortable bed, "free" internet.

Room Tip: Stay in the main building if you're uncomfortable with a long staircase.

Best aspects of this hotel are the central location, hot shower and comfortable bed. My room was basic and the shower area is not really separate from the bedroom. Free water, nice breakfast and friendly staff are also positives.

2 years back few options existed for 100 usd. Now plenty of hotels do and as a frequent traveller in Asia, this hotel is like a backpacker lodge...with no windows, leaky loos and alleged cleaning daily. There are now other options in 2013. I am disturbed that anyone accuses this hotel as being excellent and wonder if they have seen any others. Yangon is easy to get around and most hotels are 10 minutes from anywhere so the central location is not much of a benefit.

The hotel is only if you have to.

My party of three spent two nights in this excellent city hotel. Booked by Internet after reading favourable comments on Trip Advisor. Arranged airport pickup on our arrival and this service was prompt and efficient as well as welcoming. Arrival at our hotel was a pleasant experience and check in went as smoothly as any five star hotel that I gave stayed in. Rooms were better than expected as we were in the annexe next door which was NOT an inconvenience as we were on the second floor. The rooms were well appointed and clean and comfortable with kettle facilities and working flat screen tv.
We had several meals in the hotel and they were excellent.
The staff in all departments were more than helpful and with smiling faces at all times.
I would unquestionably recommend this hotel even if I could afford a more expensive one!
I look forward to going back again if the opportunity arises.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room

Having stayed at East Hotel now four times we can highly recommend this hotel based on the location, service and quality of rooms. The best rooms to stay in are the right hand side(lift side) above the 4th floor, the other side are rooms looking directly onto a brick wall with no sunlight and the rooms can have a musty smell to them.Food is limited, breakfast is OK and we would recommend Traders Hotel directly across the road for the excellent buffet for dinner.
