“A delightful oasis in a dusty city”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 February 2012

We stayed here at the start and finish of a recent trip to Myanmar and loved it.
As others have said, it's a beautiful building, with some lovely design touches, in a lush, well-tended garden. The staff are friendly and helpful. You can easily while away the day by the pool or on the verandah, sipping a lime juice. But it's only 2000 kyat for a taxi to the city centre for sight-seeing.
It is expensive to eat in the restaurant, but we did it one night, eating in a private corner of the garden - quite idyllic and the food was great too. Breakfast was the best we had in Myanmar.
For me it just falls short of 5 stars, because of small things that don't quite work - minor repairs needed in the bathrooms, wi-fi pretty hopeless the days we were there - but some of this is not really the fault of the staff. I think it's just difficult to deliver western standards all the time, given the constraints under which they work.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms are shady: great for getting out of the heat of the day. But if you want light, a...

Any wonder the #1 rating!Vehicles halt at the covered entrance, some 70 metres from reception, walk across the long bridge over/along the koi ponds, huge pool on the left, shiplapped teak clad, quiet grandeur, understated.
Thru the courtyard to your massive room, fluffy robes, shuttered windows and the mossie net, teak furniture, padding house staff,quiet.....Breakfast on the verandah overlooking expansive gardens,palms,flowers,orchids....ah just great,we stayed four nights,2 on arrival,up the Chindwin then 2 more.
Returning in Sept,12.to traverse the Irrawaddy...14 days...go do the country, show the people you care, they deserve your wishes.

Room Tip: Thru the courtyard to the back RH side, ground level

We spent a couple of nights at the Govenor's Residence before our round trip through Myanmar and one in the end.
Extremely nice staff. Go for the Govenor's rooms. The hotel is a quiet island in hectic Yangon.
They serve nice food and you can relax at the pool with very attentive service. The bar could need some music, though.

DO NOT go for "The Strand". We checked it outas we actually planned to stay there (I was so glad we decided for the Orient Express Govenor's Residence). "The Strand" run down and not in a really good location.

We stayed here for our last night before leaving Rangoon and thoroughly enjoyed it. Hotel was full of character, all modern conveniences: rooms were spacious, bathrooms worked and were of high standard. The breakfast was fantastic, international standard. The grounds and layout are special, evocative of a luxurious plantation or tropical estate. The pool is lovely although unheated so not very inviting in January when we were there. For those of with late flights on check out day there is a lovely open living room above the reception. With a pool table and lounge areas it is perfect for spending your last hours sipping a drink, enjoying the luscious greenery and the quiet before the airport and return to reality. The only criticism is that for noise sensitive travelers you hear absolutely everything taking place in the hall/stairwell outside your room as the doors are thin and not sound proof, a second door leading into the bedroom would have been ideal but the place was enchanting enough to forget it.

Governor's Residence is a world class hotel and the perfect place to stay in Yangon. At first sight, one views a quiet lush tropical garden with Koi ponds and a beautifully renovated colonial residence. You are greeted and cared for by an incredible staff who only want to make you happy and succeed. The guide service they provide is excellent. The food is the best in Yangon! The chef is very creative and goes out of his way to accomodate personal tastes and dietary restrictions.
The rooms are beautifully renovated, tastefully decorated and one of the nicest in the world. It has a interesting neighborhood with local restaurants that one can easily walk to and is only 10 minutes from Shwedagon Pagoda by foot. Going to the Pagoda at 4:30pm was an incredible cultural experience and different each time.
Governor's Residence was the best hotel in Myanmar and I can't wait to return!

We stayed here at the beginning and end of our trip to Myanmar. The grounds are beautiful and the staff are really responsive and helpful. On our last day we didn't have to leave until 4.30 although check out was at 12 nut they willingly arranged for us to have a room to use before we left. This meant that we were free to enjoy our day and change before we started the long journey home.
The food is really good and there's a wide choice between western and eastern foods.
The rooms are lovely, shower works brilliantly and the bed is really comfortable. The only downside for me was that a very mild perfume is used to keep the rooms fresh which I'm sure most people would really like but I don't like. However, it was easy to open the windows and get rid of the 'freshness'!
Although it's not in the centre of Yangoon, it's very easy and inexpensive to get a taxi and the hotel staff were helpful in organaising this and also ensuring what the price would be before we got in.
I think what I liked best about this hotel was the atmosphere of calm and peacefulness which is an amazing thing to find in a large city like Yangoon. I would definitely return.

Room Tip: We stayed in two different rooms, upstairs and downstairs, both were really nice and neither better...

This hotel is in a beautiful old residence, and with only 48 rooms feels like your own home away from home. the setting is stunning, the service faultless and the facitilies beautiful. Our only complaint was not having enough time to settle in and enjoy - one night is not enough! the food and wine are beautiful and the rooms large and comfortable. Although our room had a squeaky air-con fan when it wasnt on high, which was a bit of a problem - however we did advise on check out, so hopefully it's fixed! (room 303 I think it was)

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper, perhaps check the air-con noise prior unpacking!!
