“High tea”
Reviewed 3 May 2012

I suggest you stay at a more reasonably priced hotel ie The Summit Parkview Hotel, and book a 'High tea' at the Governers' in the afternoon.

Room Tip: If you go for High Tea you can wander round the hotel and enjoy the balcony with views of the garden...

The Governor's Residence is a fabulous hotel with old fashioned charm and great service; the perfect place to return to after a day of sightseeing.

Room Tip: Only drawback was the sound of the frogs! Ask for a room on the second floor!

The Governor's Residence is a delightful hotel and I cannot imagine a better choice in Yangon. We spent two nights there after arrival in Burma. The hotel is not a Ritz-Carlton type 5-star... it is a very Burmese experience, and to our taste the perfect way to arrive in the country. Beautiful wood building, very comfortable rooms and beds, lovely pool and pretty good food. We had a very warm welcome from the manager, who helped us out with some of the tricks of touring in Burma.... changing money, internet issues etc. Breakfast buffet is absolutely fine (you may get better in Europe or the US, but this is Burma) and it is lovely dining or breakfasting on the terrace.
One of our group had a little glitch on departure over a charge for water in the room, which is supposed to be free, but really, this is a lovely hotel and a memorable experience.

Generally agree with the positive reviews. Positives: general sense of peace/calm and being well looked after, welcome fragrant cold towel, his and hers washbasins, lovely gardens, romantic rooms with traditional Myanmar elements (though I seem to have seen very similar items in Balinese hotels), good breakfast selection (especially fruits) Could be improved: pool area in full view of incoming guests, limited tv channels, curtains not so private from some angles, eating on garden tables means competing with local birds (ask someone eg husband to guard your food when making trips to buffet table), service is courteous and helpful but can be a little slow or error prone (nothing serious just a little feedback). Hoping to be able to return one day

Room Tip: Governors Room seems a better choice, and do get the ones upstairs for a bit more privacy and great...

The hotel feels indeed more as a residence than a hotel. It's located in the embassy area in Rangoon and we have had a great stay there. The local staff is gives a fantastic service, unpretentious and very professional. Special thanks to Oscar, who arranged a lot of things for us !
The restaurant serves very nice food, we liked it much more than the food in the Strand. Rooms are simple but very tasteful, big of size with a lot of teak elements.Great bed, but aircon is noisy at night.
We would definitely stay there again.

This upscale hotel, part of the Orient Express group, is a haven in a city with relatively few truly luxury hotels. You will be very comfortable here but do not forget the challenges any hotel faces in providing the sort of services and customer experiences seasoned travellers would expect in major cities around the world. Burma, or Myanmar if you prefer, is not an easy place in which to operate so customers need to moderate their expectations (in my view and based on my experience) if they are not to be disappointed.

The hotel is located in the Embassy district of Yangon (Rangoon) and thus is safe and tranquil. It is also conveniently situated near to that city's major attractions.

The Governors residency is by far the best hotel in Yangon, the most expensive and its looking a little tired - though great atmosphere, lovely pool, excellent service and staffing. What more could one ask for in the middle of a City. We spent 4 nights relaxing before travelling around Myanmar. The only downside after travelling around for 3 weeks we decided to pop in on our last day for lunch, buy sounenirs from the hotel shop and use of the pool before embarking on 24 hours of flights and travel. When asked if we could take a shower after swimming the manager suggested renting a room at a cost of 200 dollars (just for a shower) and the place only half full and usually they charge a day rate for use of the pool!! - Kinda gives you the idea about Orient Express..

Room Tip: Avoid being put in the back rooms near the luggage station. Rooms are dark and unpleasent
